I like the deinfluencing videos that are like, "Don't buy this thing, here's an easy way to DIY it instead". Like saying, "don't buy the dyson airwrap, here's how to do it with a brush and hairdryer" or "don't buy the color changing dress, here's how to use dye to make an old dress into one"

Also, what a lot of people often don't consider is that DIY can be even more expensive than just buying it. Which is a systematic and very complex problem that shouldn't exist like that.

@@ririzap4555 THIS. I think it would be so cool to be able to make my own version of expensive clothes, but for that I would need to purchase a sewing machine, all the materials that go along with that, fabric which isn’t cheap, zippers, buttons, etc, patterns which to my surprise are almost never free, a mannequin thing to make the clothes on, there’s probably more but I’ve never looked too deep into it because I’ve never used a sewing machine and can only sew by hand. Any DIY hobby is so expensive to start so you have to have the money to make the investment then eventually it’ll pay off

@Ella Biddy I completely understand if you don't want to spend the time or money to diy stuff, but if you ever do feel like it a lot more things can be hand sewn than youd think, it just takes a bit more time. Also you can usually get boxes of buttons and big sheets at thrift stores

@@ellabiddy4741 I totally get what you’re saying and it’s true if you want to make very tailored or professional clothing. However, you can find tons of sewing notions and fabric for cheap at garage and estate sales, and you can rip buttons and zippers off of thrift store clothing or even your own clothes that have become too worn to continue wearing. I love sewing and I want it to be accessible to everyone because it’s really an amazing life skill, even if you only use it to mend or alter clothing.

Don’t buy it if you don’t fall into the demographic- don’t buy it if you don’t NEED IT/wouldn’t benefit from it. I didn't even grow up in a situation where finances were tight, yet I still do this: I research, find the best quality for money options if there's an item I want. If its a video game, can I get it second hand for cheaper? If its merch for a series I like, do I still want it after not looking at it for a week. If it'd clothing, do I already have something similar and if not, do the charity and second hand stores have it cheaper. If its tat, will it make my living space feel more welcoming to me or will it just be clutter, and do actually want it. Its saved me a tonne of money over the years that I could spend on stuff I actually like having instead.

Shane Dawson is doing the same thing, showing up on Ryland's videos and now making some on his channel. seems like nostalgia comes into it too, people want to see new content from the youtubers they watched as kids so when they come back they're so happy because new content is what matters. I have a list and still manage to forget an item or get something twice without noticing it or something. And I still don't know what happened to one shirt, I was supposed to buy a month ago 😅 I bought a lot of clothes last month, because the armpit hole in every shirt was starting to get too big. Another fellow child of divorce with some tips no one asked: I have a 1 month rule for any impulse purchases and that's to do research into the product. Half the time when I think about how I should use it, maintain it, STORE IT and the value I will be getting out of it, the impulse is gone. Or I will just forget. By the time I remember its months later and I usually have proof I don't need said thing. Originally I started with hard limit of spending only $50 a month on non essential stuff and learned to say, OUT LOUD (this is key its how i broke my self deprivation habit) in a parental tone, "no" to buying things. It gets easier with practice. Honestly learning to parent yourself has been a game changer. Its not perfect, but it helps with being kinder to myself and learning to have better habits.

Honestly, my ADHD is so bad, that if I don't buy something within a day, I'll forget that it exists, and then need it later (often happens with groceries, if I don't write it down while I'm thinking of it, I forget and then I can't make what I wanted). Often times shipping makes it come too late... Procrastinating ordering wedding fabric right now... But it is true, for things that are more for fun, or for hobbies, it's good to think about longer. Or else I'd have a rabbit, a ton of plants, and way too many video games...

I pay my credit card off entirely every Friday, and that’s also the only time I’m allowed to make “big” purchases for non-necessary products, and only within a certain price point, and only 1-2 at a time. So I can have the longest list of desired purchases ever, and even if I buy them all, it’s so spread out that it doesn’t matter so much if it’s a waste. But also I have plenty of time for forgetting how much I want something. (I do write lists, but it’s more of a “get it out of my head” thing.) Things I want or need more move up in priority. Things that are VERY expensive turn into a saving plan for a certain amount of time instead of purchases. Paying the card and keeping it at zero keeps my previous spending in front of me and keeps me out of debt. I am aware that I shop for emotional reasons sometimes, so I can still get that hit, and also a hit from anticipating it for a week, without spending constantly. I still do impulse shopping when I actually go to stores, but I don’t do that often. Otherwise it’s only when I decide I need something by a certain time, which is not frequently. I find it works for me.

I loooooooved those old Kimberly Clark anti-hauls! I think part of the reason the trend got out of hand and morphed into this dupe culture is because the original goal of anti-hauls was to just give yourself a reason not to buy something, whether positive or negative. But I feel like as the style caught on it became a vector for drama, because it was a chance to talk negatively about popular products, brands, etc (hence the connection to "empties im not refilling" videos and the pipeline to dupe videos). The focus shifted from shining a positive light on anti-consumerist practices to finding an excuse to shine a negative light on a hot product or brand and make the influencer look positive to the audience. Negativity sells, but raising consumer awareness doesn't do as well on the algorithm
@notsquirtley-enough

I got so confused because where I am Kimberly Clark is a company that makes toilet paper... But that's a really good point about negativity. There's a delicate balance between a well written review, and falling into a bunch of negativity and hate when there's a product or company that isn't necessarily good. And we as humans like clear cut binaries, black and white, good and bad, positive or negative... When most things are grey, and you can probably find a pro and a con to just about any product. And influence is tricky because even if something wasn't meant to be negative, people will often turn it into "buy this not that," or "reasons to hate this company," when that's not the point at all. Some companies do deserve the push back and negativity like extremely fast fashion that just buys into trends and making cheap stuff that looks hot for the moment, rather than complementing what people have, or making things to last. But it's still a tricky balance with any kind of review, or opinion on a company or product.

I have something similar to the 48 hour rule, but for nearly the entire year. I keep a private Pinterest board that’s my wish list for that year. Anything that piques my interest or seems like something I want, I put on the wish list. Throughout the year, maybe I’ll buy something from the wish list and remove it, but usually it’s just a visual way of keeping tabs on anything that tempts me. I have a November birthday and then Christmas in December, so once the end of the year rolls around, I really edit the wish list down to the top things I really want. Are there products that are too similar to each other? Have I forgotten about or lost interest in anything I put on the list months ago? Are there cheaper alternatives? What’s on sale or what’s no longer available? Once I have a more curated, solid list, I have it finalized for the holidays. Then I basically reset the list for the next year.

The biggest thing I worry about deinfluencing as a trend is the amount of time I've seen people look at accessibility tools and then turn around and say things like "Just use a knife" the problem of course being that nine times out of ten accessibility tools have to be marketed to the general public in order to survive. The nuance of understanding that sometimes products are for specific people but the way people are making content about it is to be like "no one needs this and if you think you do no you don't" and it's kinda infantilizing when I've absolutely seen products that would have been genuinely useful for me because my ADHD makes most tasks harder and some products can actually help with simplifying it and then hearing someone say something like "just stop being lazy" sucks when that's the ableism I internalized my whole life and I'm just starting to forgive myself for being disabled and looking for things that CAN help me.

"using products till they're empty" is something that I've been following a lot more strictly at least since last year and it's such a simple thing and it sounds silly to need to be told but it really is helpful to keep in mind. I remember Jenna Marbles had a video on things women do that guys don't understand and she brought up "goo hoarding" and that's always stuck with me. When you think about it, women really do buy a lot of products that are gooey like hair care, lip balms, foundations and such. So now I keep a pair of shampoo and conditioner in my shower and one in my closet and I don't buy a new one until I throw one away. I've been "using products till they're empty" with food too. Like I don't need 4 different breakfast options in my pantry. So when I go to the grocery store, I may see something that I know I'm out at home, but I remind myself that I have other things for that meal and that I can only buy a restock once I run out of the other item.

I try to follow this as much as I can, but my problem with beauty products is that I buy so few already that if they don't work for me (I don't have many holy grails) it's because they cause issues instead of just being less desirable :S I've abandoned a few hair care products for this reason. I'm currently finishing up a moisturizer right now though that I don't like before buying the one I know I like because at least that isn't damaging and still does the job!

The waiting to buy things actually works so well. Chances are you won't even remember that product a few days later, and if you do, the novelty of it wears off so you can evaluate more clearly if it's actually worth the purchase for you. I never thought of using it for food delivery though, that's so smart haha

Things I ask myself when I want to buy something is " how much would you be okay with to pay for that thing" and "would you still buy it if it was twice its price?" It really helps me and my bank account :D

It is kind of crazy to think that the default assumption is that influencers are lying about products for a bag so much so that's it's considered 'deinfluencing' to just give an honest review. Like that says a lot about the state of the influencing career and the popular perception of it. Also I used to work at a salon/beauty supply shop. Oliplex is not a forever product. It's meant to get your hair to a healthier place if it's been damaged from heat and/or bleaching. Use it till your hair is in a better state and then switch back to your regular products.

Hannah Luise Poston is a great person to watch if you struggle with overspending or are stuck in a loop of buying everything you are recommended. She focuses on thoughtful consumerism and using what you already own. She often "dupes" eye shadow pallets that she likes on the market with stuff she already owns. She often does "low buys" or "no buys" where she spends a certain amount of time restrengthening the muscle of not buying everything you want

I like the deinfluencing videos that go ‘this is my house, this is the pile of unorganized unwashed clothes on the floor that’s sat there for 2 days. I’ve been way too busy to wash them so its there they will stay until my schedule clears up’ or ‘this is my body in my modeling photos, this is my body right now. Don’t believe the photoshopped glamoured online pics’

my impulse buying is so bad, i have to sleep on it for, like, a month. usually by that time comes around, i either don’t have the money to be spending on it, or i’ve forgotten about it entirely. has really saved me a lot of money over the last few months. i can’t do that with food though, i’ll think about a craving until i eat it lol

I so agree with pretty much all of this. I feel like the other thing to note, is as college students, teenagers, or even just adults with ends to make meet, when we are over consuming and sort of copying these influencers we're going against our lifestyle. influencer lifestyles are grandiose and significantly different because the money never stops. you can get so many streams of income. also, it is a cycle, where an influencer does a video on "target haul with me" and makes that money right back. Its almost like shopping for free because the video generates revenue.its not conducive with a "regular" person's lifestyle

I appreciate channels like yours that provides information on your experience using a product. I personally don't see you as an influencer rather just one access point of information being delivered via KZbin. I'm not an impulse buyer rather doing my research on several points of information to make educated decisions. You just happen to be someone who I respect and hold your opinions in high regard, on a lot of what your channel presents.

When I first got more into skincare EVERYONE was raving about Paulas Choice exfoliator. I bought another one before the Paulas Choice and was incredibly happy with the results but decided to try out the Paulas Choice one since everyone seemed to have the best results. I can not even describe how disappointed I was. It was nowhere near as good as the other one and did absolutely nothing for my skin. But I still had to use it up because it was so expensive and had to wait so long to buy the other one again and my skin got worse (or just to the old state before the skincare I guess) and I was unhappy for months. Since then, I hardly ever listen to people who rave about a hyped product.

Off topic but where I live, we have these things called “packet skincare”, essentially a tester-size of skincare sold in little packets for cheap. They’re really useful when it comes to testing out products, and can help to avoid this exact situation.

As someone who's friends define as "chronically online" I have to say that I am guilty of being influenced to buy things. Starting in high school I started amassing a massive makeup collection that was full coverage and completely unnecessary. I have a hard time letting things go so now eight years later I still own a lot of this stuff. Now I find myself a lot more cautious of the things I am influenced to buy. For example, I have the Stanley Cup. Is it absolutely massive and slightly ridiculous? Sure. Do I use it daily? Yes. I knew I wanted an insulated cup to put fun beverages in and it happened to work out. I think a lot of deinfluencing is estimating whether or not this product will "fit in" with your life/lifestyle.

I bought the Stanley cup as well after buying random other cups at Walmart that didn’t actually keep things cold or fit in my cup holder. I use it all day every day and I’m not mad about it. I’m a trained hairstylist who had over processed her hair and genuinely needed Olaplex for a time to help. Once it ran its course and I no longer needed the help, I stopped. I have the Dyson air wrap too. I bought it out of my tax refund after my hairdryer died. I use it constantly and it’s worth every penny to me. That said, there are lots of things I won’t buy, CT wands for example, because it’s not something I need or I can get something similar for cheaper.

totally stand by the 48 hour rule, it's a great guideline. i often let something brew for weeks or months before i buy it just to make extra sure I actually want it or to allow myself to peruse similar items. i think i take a little too long sometimes lol, but it definitely helps me feel more secure in my purchases. and when i finally do buy it, it's so much more exciting! I'm like "finally!!!!" and that feeling lets me know I made the right choice lol

I didn’t know the Dyson thingy was a hairdryer until you said it. I don’t own a hair dryer, gave away my old one to a friend to dry his dog. I didn’t even know Olaplex was trendy 😂 I thought it was some commercial grade brand that salons used and I was tired of my hair being so broken after bleaching, so after doing some research Olaplex was always recommended in web articles. I use it now for my bleached hair and it makes it look less frizzy and broken. I even used it when my black Asian hair grew out and was unbleached and its one of the best products I use on my hair. So it’s interesting to me to hear how it damaged other people’s hair and wasn’t effective. Basically, not every product will work for all kinds of hair, everyone should research and test which product is actually effective for you.

i hate trends with a burning passion, a flame that burns a bit too brightly to be justified, so i rarely look at something online and thinl "i need that." the only "influencers" that actually influence mere are fashion historians who encourage making your own stuff and are generally anti fast fashion. now that i think about it, a few artists have influenced me to try out new mediums, but i almost always have all the required stuff and those are rare occasions, because i get introduced to new mediums mostly through art school

I use the 48 hour rule too, and a few other things: I write down why I want that thing, where I’m going to store it, and what I can do to meet that need/want if I don’t get it or wait to get it. That prevents a lot of purchases, and makes me feel good about the things I do buy. Also, if everyone is buying a thing, there’s a good chance that someone you know has it, so see if you can borrow it (or decant some, if it’s a beauty product). If you use it three times and are still excited about it, there’s a good chance you’ll get long term benefit out of it.

the ad disclosure in my country is insane nobody regulates it that's why i kind of avoid following local influences because they literally won't say it is an ad at all. The good side to where I'm from is credit cards are not as popular and you spend whatever cash you really have on hand so it feels more realistic to weigh the costs of what you are about to buy
so about the Shein brand trip...
