Lifeless, lazy, greedy, uncaring- If you have noticed a drop in quality over the last few years in Pokemon games, you're not alone. Doing a little research makes it easy to see why that is; rushed games, lazy executives, merchandise timing requirements- Sure, you can rush out a handheld game and maybe people won't notice as much. But a console game? That's much harder to do. In this video we go over almost every aspect of Sword and Shield, from the very start, to the "postgame" and I'll show you just how much they try to get away with. Dexit was only the beginning.

Okay, everyone and their grandma keeps bringing this up, but here's the thing: Pokemon as a media franchise and pokemon as a video game series are almost two ENTIRELY different things. Like do people even realize that this franchise has ITS OWN SPECIFIC COMPANY dedicated to it? Pokemon as a whole has made billions upon billions, but the total revenue it's earned from the video games alone is only a small, small fraction of it. Granted, that's not to say it's not an extremely successful video-game franchise in its own right, and that it DOESN'T have the resources to make each entry an incredibly polished and well-padded game. But people need to stop acting like even a fraction of the money it pulls in via the anime, toys, plushies, card games, and so on is in turn invested into the games, because that's just unrealistically optimistic at best.

Pokemon is bigger than Disney's individual properties and many, many years younger than the majority of the companies on that list. It is incomprehensibly massive. You mention The Pokemon Company here: "do people even realize this franchise has its own company dedicated to it?" Yes they do, and it makes the point even more relevant considering Game Freak owns one third of that massive company. The Pokemon Company handles brand management and most of the products and advertising, everything from toys to food. Even when they are not developing games, they make revenue off of their share of The Pokemon Company, because we're aware they have at least a 33% share of it and Nintendo has well over 50% between itself and the portion that it owns of Creatures. People do like to throw around the 90 billion number a lot, which is still valid. Again, bigger than any Disney IP. But the company is valued at 15 billion, which is still an enormous number. The profit from games alone is astronomical compared to the cost to produce them. From games alone, excluding Pokemon Go and any mobile games, 13 billion in profit. Including mobile games that number jumps to around 17-18 billion due to Pokemon Go becoming a phenomenon and generating a ridiculous profit increase when it released. These numbers are on par and at times better than the best selling console series of all time, Call of Duty (keep in mind Activision employs 9200 people and Game Freak employs less than 200). This isn't to shift all of the blame on Game Freak either. Game Freak are bad at optimization, rarely hire new talent, sub 200 bodies, and I can only think of a single foreigner at the company, but the number is still likely to be in the single digits if there's more. Based on my personal experiences with Japanese companies and their complete lack of time management, the fact that the game looks the way it does is not surprising and it needed more time, more money, more people, and more effort. Game Freak cannot keep up with the hardware and are growing more and more incompetent. That's their issue solely. Where money is concerned, Nintendo are greedy bastards and likely aren't allowing more money to be allocated to the games because the potential profit from absolute units eating up anything handed to them is still exponentially more than the current cost of production. Until the majority of the consumer base demands that the product delivered is at a minimum bar of quality this will continue to happen All of that being said, Game Freak still has more than enough resources to make this far better than it was and you need not make excuses for them.

I just pointed out that people keep pretending that these games have much, much more resources than they actually do. We're talking a difference of TENS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS here. An overwhelming percentage of that is earned via things OTHER than the games, and it's nonsense to act like even half of that money should be funneled back into developing the games, that's just plain nonsense. I'm not saying Game Freak isn't being cheap when it comes to making these games - just that they're not being issued a budget of a billion dollars and consciously deciding only to use a few million of it. It's a HUGE difference. Although sadly, from a financial sense Game Freak is completely correct with how they're making these games. Sword and Shield made millions from lackluster effort; would doubling or tripling their budget have increased their sales accordingly? No, not likely.

My favourite part is when people say that the reason long term Pokémon fans don't like these games is nostalgia for the old ones or that they grew up. I never played a single Pokémon game and now I'm playing the DS ones (Black and Platinum) as a 30-year old and I think it would be embarrassing to even try to compare the new ones to them because of how hollow, plastic and rushed they are. It's not nostalgia or age, it's just that the older fans can easily tell that all the passion and dedication that used to be there is completely gone.

I just realised something. "with the future proof models" That is why pokemon disappear at a certain distance. It is the models. You see: You normally produce models at differing resolutions. Basically reducing the polygon count by removing details. That way you get a model that can be loaded when you observe something at larger distances. And finally reducing that to basic shapes for extreme distances. Take a dice for example. The three models would be: 1) High poly. Rounded corners, inset dots. Used for closeups. 2) Mid poly. Slightly rounded corners, dots painted on using Normal Maps (illusion of depth comes from the normal map). Used for mid range. 3) Low poly. Basically a straight up cube with the dots painted on. Used for wide range. The models, which caused slowdown for the 3DS are the high poly ones. And back then: This could not be fixed by loading a mid range model because: They do not exist. Why should there? There were no Pokemon in the open world. There are only High Poly models. That is why pokemon can not be loaded from a distance. Because then multiple pokemon could be seen and due to the high poly count: it would cause a slowdown. Meaning these models were unfit for an "open world" style game. And Gamefreak did not give the team enough time to produce low-poly versions of each pokemon. Which is why they had to use this work-around. Gamefreak had their devs skip an important step in optimisation because they wanted to rush the game out.

But the future proof models aren't even high poly models. I haven't downloaded them, but looking at the wire frame, it really doesn't look that bad. My assumption is that they aren't using optimization techniques correctly or at all. I mean, that scene with the group of people that drops frames like they're made of lava is just embarrassing. My assumption is that they weren't using occlusion to de-render all of the objects not in frame. That, and they likely don't scale animation framerate or texture resolution with distance. Meaning if they wanted a field full of Pokémon, they'd all be animated at max framerate with their normal texture resolution. Which would obviously tank performance. I can't say what it is exactly that they're doing wrong, but they're certainly doing something(s) wrong. In my humble opinion, it all boils down to a lack of care. The higher-ups just don't care, and that is reflected in the product they produce. Which I think is evident from the lifeless environment and textures. There's no excuse for the dirt and grass textures to be desaturated and lifeless. That's a simple issue that could be fixed by a teenager with Photoshop, much less a team of professional artists and coders who make their own shaders. It's just a careless and silly issue to have.

" You have to consider that the GPU inside of the switch is on paar with a GTX 260 (no: not the 2060. The 260. From 15 years ago) then "high poly" is relative. For the hardware the games were on (the 3DS and Switch) a model with 7000 tris is considered "high poly". (For reference: Tyranitar has 7352 tris)

@Bass-D C I understand that the switch is an underpowered system, but considering the cavalcade of games that are more graphically and technically intense that are already on switch and playing at 30fps kind of disproves that theory, I think. Especially considering a game like Fortnite runs pretty decently at 30fps with a bunch of 7k~ poly characters on screen at once and all of the extra buildings with scripts attached to each destructible square and prop. Not to mention the physics on items that can be knocked around by certain weapons. Things like that, Warframe, Paladins, etc, really make me wonder what they did to have so much trouble running that game on switch. Unfortunately, I have no way of finding out since Gamefreak won't ever make a "What Went Wrong" GDC talk about any of their games, so I'm left to wonder. Though a more experienced coder might tell by ripping the game and pulling it apart.

Although you're right, gamefreak themselves are probably seeing only a bit of the money, as most of it is just merchandise, and pokemon games are just advertisement for all the merch so they don't care that much. Does it justify ? ABSOLUTELY NOT ! Does it make sense ? Yes, and it's really sad that it does. Oddly though the fans are to blame too, this game sold faster than mario and Zelda even though it's INFINITELY worse than them. The idea of gym trainers forming their teams around ‘Themes’ rather than ‘Types’ is SUCH a good idea. It wouldn’t really change a typical standard playthrough that much, being able to choose and swap different types and not having a limit, and could still make for decent challenges later on. But in the case of a Nuzlocke, it would make forming a team to prey on the gym’s weaknesses much harder, instead having to form AROUND their strengths. Also, seeing leaders with their own diverse team could make for some really interesting fights and characters. Rather than just the ‘Ice’ guy or the ‘Dragon’ girl.

I had an idea where a gym leader used three types of pokemon based around a theme. Like a sailor gym leader uses water, fighting, and steel types. Or a rock star gym leader uses poison, rock. And dark types. Then have the ai boost the levels of the gym leaders pokemon so they are at most always 2-5 levels a head up to a certain level . This way it keeps it challenging and you can't just sweep a gym with a single pokemon after grinding it. Gives the gym leaders personality and makes things challenging again. Of course it's a good idea so I doubt game freak will use it.

For almost the entire game I thought Bede was a pissed off old lady who was never allowed to become a trainer because she had to work to support a family, then she's finally retired and is determined to become the champion now and prove everyone wrong who never believed in her, and she becomes your rival because she's just sick of children getting the chances she didn't have. Funny thing, around 2:20:00 you start talking about Pokerus. I remember back when X and Y first came out one of my pokemon caught Pokerus on the very first day after the release. My buddy and I hung out that day so we could play together, and I remember he freaked out a little bit when I showed him one of my mons with pokerus. Can't remember what first had it, sadly. Anyway I traded something with it to him so he could get it, and then he posted about it online somewhere and we started giving it out to other people and spreading it further with wondertrade. No idea if it's entirely true but we've always joked that I was patient zero for the 6th generation strain of Pokerus.

My personal belief is that the argument that "It's just a kids game." To try and wave away criticism is beyond stupid. The fact that it's a kids game should be more of an incitive to make it good. If I had kids I wouldn't let them play this stuff, because it's low quality. Kids deserve better than this. The mark of something thats good and made for kids, is something that they enjoy as kids and will come back to many years later and still find something to enjoy. As a kid I loved Pokemon Red, as an adult I have a lot of nostalgia for it and can see, despite being very primitive compared to later games it had a lot of good design choices and interesting broken mechanics that makes it fun to play.

Even if it was "a kids game" it's still poorly done. My 12 year old sister played this and 30 minutes in, she started complaining with how much handholding there was. And she's been playing complex Rom hacks with me like pokemon unbound and volt 2 and what not, and she has well over 300 hours on them. Again, this is a 12 year old girl. Kids are smart, they don't need this amount of retardation in their games.

I tried giving myself some rules when I did a second play through. Like I only allowed myself to catch dynamax pokémon, only but ten or so healing items per town, try and avoid as many trainer battles as much as possible. Problem is in a second play through is so much easier

It's not just a gameplay thing that he has a new team for some reason, the idea is that because he kept losing with his old team, he made a completely new one to try out different strategies. - 6th gen had 3 bipedal humanoidish animal based starters - 7th gen had 2 of them and Primarina - 8th gen has 3 bipedal humanoid animal starters that look humanoid to a point that they're basically furries. I despise each and every one of them. On isolation these pokemon are not the worst but as starters they really lack variety and creative design. I don't want a fire rabbit wearing soccer clothes, I want something like Torterra, a "monster" who has a very creative and unique design. Heck.. Starters like Sceptile and Blaziken are the perfect example on how to make a bipedal slightly humanoid pokemon without it looking more like a person than a monster, why can't we have that anymore?!

Now that this has been established, a corporation can be lazy even while many individuals within it are overworked. For instance, the corporation has 100% control over when games are released. Especially today: just get online and trade. Blue wasn't enhanced by owning Red (White and Black might have been that way with Opelucid City or the other city unique to each version) I don't feel like that's a good argument. I have more of an issue with the Emeralds, Crystal, Ultra Celestial Bodies, etc. being full price. Those are DLC sold for the same price. You paid for two games for one game with good DLC. That technically has been addressed via DLC...unfortunately, SwSh was so incomplete, it didn't feel like an add-on or a proper sequel. It felt like an incomplete game that lacked a satisfying post-game that finally got two good post-game episodes for the still incomplete game for $90.

Mega evolution game you +100 to your total stats, and maybe a type/ability change, at the cost of not being able to use a different held item. Plus, it was pretty predictable due to it being available only for specific Pokémon (I'm NOT saying that was a good thing, I'm just saying it wasn't super OP). Dynamax, meanwhile, gives massive boosts to the power of your moves and enormous bulk, _and_ you could still hold an item on top of that. Also, you can Dynamax pretty much any Pokémon on your team, allowing you to trick your opponent. Even if it lasted for only 3 turns, it is so strong that the winners and losers of so many Gen 8 battles are decided by it. You're saying that Dynamax not being exclusive to certain Pokémon means it isn't "broken," but I don't think that's the kind of "broken" the original comment was talking about. Plus, they already had a mechanic that "everyone could use" that didn't completely define the meta to the point where everyone hated it. _It was called Z-Moves._ (I'm still of the mind that Gen 7's Z-Moves were the most balanced and fun "gimmick" in terms of competitive play)

Actually when Hop talked about switching his team members out, he meant that he removed some Pokemon from his team. So the reason why his Wooloo (which is his actual starter) was missing from his team was because he switched it for a different Pokemon to optimize his team. You touched on a point I really appreciated- Mentioning that you criticize this so much not because you hate Pokémon, but because you love it and want the best for it. This was a point I tried so hard to stress to my friends who openly, repeatedly and to this day (Seriously? People still defend all this scummy shit to this day? Surprises me every time) mocked me for hating dexit, and hating how lazy Swoosh looked, felt, and seemed through all that we saw. For the first time in my life, I didn't pre-order a Pokémon game. And I'm someone who liked Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, still kind of do! Granted, I think USUM should have been the only ones we got, as they make SuMo essentially... pointless, even more so than sister third games of the past, but... Swoosh just felt insulting. That's what it is, at the end of the day- a true feeling of being insulted. Masuda's non-statement about the backlash to dexit is now the gold standard of non-committal 'we hear you, we see you' trash replies that I use whenever I need an example of the archetype. And, of course, it still broke records. As far as I know, they are still the two best-selling games on the Switch? (Please tell me I'm wrong.) At this point, Game Freak could take a dump in a box, slap a Pokémon sticker on it, and still shatter records, and that makes me sad, because... that's what they're doing.

Ultra Sun and Moon changed a bunch of shit that was done better in Sun and Moon. So it failed at being the better version, further making it the worst third version in the series. Plus it didn't fixed the handholding, and how even by the last island you still feel like you are in tutorial land. Sword and Shield only sold as well as it did because it was the first actual mainline title on an home console and not some bad remake of generation 1 with pokemon go mechanics.

i find that the designs of the gmax forms are more interesting than most of the megas. I think the megas are cooler because of the gameplay changes to pokemon that come with them, such as different abilities and typings, and how megas can: revitalize pokemon that are weak, like with mawile; switch up the gameplans of more popular pokemon, like charizard or mewtwo; and brings a new light to older forgotten pokemon,adding newer levels of depth either with the design or the stats, like medicham or kangaskhan. I sitll think that a lot of the megas are overdesigned and look really bad, especially ones like manectric or aerodactyl, and that the gmax pokemons designs are way more visually complex and interesting

While Kukui didn't really do much for the plot either in Sun & Moon, I personally find him to be my second favorite Pokemon professor. And if you really think about it, Kukui feels like a father-figure to the player despite there not being one present. Actually, now that I think about it...NONE of the Pokemon professors do anything integral to the plot in ANY of the Pokemon games other than to just act as a beginning guide for the player.

gen 8 very, _very_ nearly did me in as a pokemon fan, in general. in theory, it *should* have been my favourite generation of all time. not only is galar based on my home country, but as we went into gen 8, we were due gen 4 remakes. which is the gen that initally got me into pokemon, with my favourite region to date, and dawn, one of my favourite characters of all time. and instead, sword just disappointed me so thoroughly. bdsp, too. to the extent that i didn't buy the remakes, because if i wanted to play a blocky version of sinnoh, i'd just play the originals. i was hoping for a glow-up with sinnoh, as a love letter to it, like hoenn got with oras. and i was so freaking excited for a region based on england. and the return i got for my investment nearly made me drop pokemon as a franchise. the only reason i'm still a fan, is because i have adhd, and my old hyperfixations flared up. i still love dawn and sinnoh. but i am _so_ underwhelmed with the pokemon games. legends arceus was be my last purchase until they give me a reason to come back.

That's a very interesting story! Gen 8 actually did do it in for me as a fan, I haven't touched a modern Pokemon game since Sword/Shield. I've heard very good things from Arceus, but I can't stand to have my hopes dashed in any way again lol. The only ways I interact with the Pokemon series nowadays is by listening to the soundtrack because both Arceus's and SV's OSTs are fantastic.

I personally got into Coromon recently and it's so lovingly based on gens 4/5 on pokemon with a gorgeous diverse overworld and these amazing animated sprites for coromon and battle effects, it brings back 2d pokemon in the best way and satisfies my adhd's insistence that I play pokemon games

As someone whose favorite generation was Ruby/Sapphire, maybe be glad you didn't bother with BDSP. ORAS massacred the story, the Champion, and the legendaries. And worst of all, they just hand you Latios/Latias at level 20. Not kidding- LEVEL 20! Not only is that waaaay too early to give you a Pokemon with such a high stat total, but at that level their movepools SUCK and you can't even keep them on-level with the rest of your team at that point since legendaries grow so slowly! I put one of my favorite Pokemon ever into the fricken BOX because he was so useless and so disappointing. My favorite generation became an embarrassment that I really wish I hadn't bought at release since it just looked good. I really do wish they'd screwed up the graphics for ORAS like they did with BDSP so I wouldn't waste my time and money on it.

4:54 It can also be argued that Fire emblem never had voice acting before but yet Fire emblem echos is the first game to implement full on voice acting. This later became the standard and now Fire emblem warriors and Fire emblem three houses also have full on voice acting and fire emblem is a really text heavy game, especially Three houses with it's 4 routes and tons and tons of supports. It's has much more text to voice act than Pokemon. And if you are asking, yes it enhances the experience. You no longer have to read the dialogue during the story. Characters feel alot more expressive and likable, they can express emotions much better than a simple textbox. Lastily the characters' death feel a whole lot more emotional as you hear their last words and screams rather than reading a textbox. That being said, so you're telling me the highest grossing franchise can't get this quality when other lesser nintendo franchises can?

@@sonicthehedge Personally I think SoV from a pure gameplay perspective does several things wrong that should've been polished more, like enemies ambushing you on maps, the U.I. being downgraded from Awakening and Fatesl your hit, crit and avo rates no longer being visible and they took out a bunch of settings for how battles play out, maps that have too many avo tiles and the Cantors, THE FUCKING CANTORS. I've personally never liked how you always take 1 damage minimum from attacks, meaning that Armored classes almost always take 2 damage minimum, or how most everyone has an almost non-existent res growth rate. There's a few other things, but you get my points. It's not terrible, but I do hope that if another game gets remade, they'll update the game mechanics, map design, and customization better. 3H definitely has its issues too, but elitists who call any new thing the series has tried ever since Awakening too "casualized" or denounces it as "real" Fire Emblem can get run over by a semi-truck for all I care. Echoes at the very least is a LOT better than, well... Sonic Colors Ultimate.

I'll say Celica's Route was really flawed and annoying as Alm's Route was always pretty fun imo. But props for the devs for trying to modernize it while still being faithful to the original game. Thats the hard part of remaking of a game, you could change some aspects but then it is different or they just make it worst. Sonic Colors Ultimate for example just lazily adds Ghost Wisp and level design is slightly changed due to it. It's just a Hover Wisp except worst as it can't ring dash and overall breaks the pace of the game. Make it even worse that half of that game promotion was that wisp.

1:17:14, I think there's actually a good explanation as to why it feels more linear in Gen 7 and 8. Gen 1-6 had a top-down perspective for the games, even in XY and ORAS, where the graphics were 3D, but it played like a 2D game. GameFreak was used to drawing wide, flat maps with all kinds of neat things to find and come back to later. But then they decided to make Gen 7 feel more like a 3D game, and GameFreak, not knowing how to design that for 3D, decided hallways were the way to go. Sure, you could go off the beaten path in a few areas, but what do you find? Trainers, minor items, and the occasional TM that is likely just a status move. But at least Alola kept some sprawling caves with multiple levels that had stronger Pokémon the deeper you went. Gen 8 got rid of them entirely, hoping that the Wild Areas, even in the DLC, would suffice for that. Basically, instead of making several intricate dungeons, they made one giant one to explore with tons of Pokémon, but you're punished for finding those above your levels that you don't even get a good reward if you can beat it (and since you can't catch it, the EXP is the only reward you can get for going out of your way), the salespeople in the wild area are boring, the only thing to find particularly great in the wild area are the raid battles, and even they're not that good if you don't have Nintendo Online! Honestly, it's the biggest worry I have with Scarlet and Violet. Legends Arceus showed that they can do open world alright, letting you fight things way above your league, but you might still be able to catch it, giving you a good reward for risking blacking out in the middle of nowhere, but I could still see Paldea not being as fun a place to be if they decide to treat it less like Hisui and more like Galar.

@@positivea9111 Honestly, things were starting to look up with Arceus, as i wanted to give the series a bit of a chance, but then gen 9 was announced for release for this year and it just killed any good will i had in the pokemon company. They don't care about quality, or crunch time, they just want a game out there because they know it'll sell regardless. And i'm honestly not sure it can be halted at this point? SwSh's great controversy happened and the game still was the best selling yet, so, it's just saying to the tops "rush the games, it doesn't matter!"

You aren't wrong. Nothing wrong with people who like SwSh, but I think objectively the older games (B2W2 and older) were much more polished and fleshed out. However, SwSh being one of the best selling Nintendo/Switch/Pokémon games of all time, means that this trend will continue of yearly, rushed games, much like AAA games for Xbox/PlayStation. Sad, as usually Nintendo is associated with true gems being released when they're ready, not just as money grabs.

I’ll give you some kiddo. -b2w2 has good challenge in the base game that keeps you from just steamrolling the game easily (cough cough XY SM) with gym leaders like clay and elesa, even roxie because it’s hard to find a weakness for them, and it gives you an incentive to think about what Pokémon you’ll want to include on your journey, instead of “hurr durr me use these pokemans to steamroll ez” -b2w2 has a good chunk of postgame content to enjoy, like the PWT, black city and white treehollow, which are essentially battle towers that go on for 10 rounds, and once you beat the 10th, you’re able to unlock items in their shops, like evo stones etc. there are tons of legendaries to catch, with pretty good quests on how to obtain them, instead of just getting them from gift boxes or some shit, and you’re able to battle colress again in the p2 lab, and N in the ruins of his castle, which you’re lead to by a Zoroark in victory road, along with more extra battles to do, like the game freak cameos, cynthia, the dark triad, alder, banjirou, Hue, etc. -b2w2 actually has a STORY wowie. Yeah it has a story, and for one of the only pokemon games to have a fleshed out, interesting story, they knocked it out of the park I think. It isn’t gamebreaking, but it’s a nice touch to the experience. -the game looks very good for one of the last ever ds games. It looks very lively and fun, instead of static and boring. The Pokémon animations helped with that aspect. -b2w2 has awesome music. source material: Driftveil City. It just makes you wanna dance to it, they even made the low health music good to listen to. See? Not every b2w2 fan gives bad arguments. Plus you need to learn not to be such a loathing bitch because someone shat on your favorite Pokémon game. yikes, kiddo.

@@MrJoeyWheeler It wasn't Dexit itself that turned me away so much as the hard evidence that we were repeatedly lied to. Frame-by-frame animations ripped from SM/USUM and models reused from XY. I can understand that at some point, the dex will need to be cut down. But to chop it in half and then flat out LIE to us about the reasons for it? Nope. I'm done with GameFreak.
