Very informative. Born and raised here, but heard about the Delmar Divide from one of my nieces that goes to Wash U.

Just visited our son at WashU and when he told us about this we thought we would check it out. It’s crazy how much things change literally across the street. I don’t know how they keep the segregation so starkly separate.

@@edhcb9359 There is a new organization, I haven't heard anything about it yet, but they call themselves Delmar Divine with the n in divine the color blue. They are in an abandoned hospital on the corner of Delmar and Belt. I guess they are trying to change the narrative. It seems like restaurants and offices will be there.

@@kathleengamble9100 It’s really interesting to me because our son is in medical school there and is considering staying in that community afterwards so we may retire out there. I really like the community around the hospital but coming from CA I couldn’t believe how each neighborhood doesn’t bleed into the other’s at all!

@@edhcb9359 You may be talking about Barnes Hospital area south of the Divide where the mansions, Forest Park and Wash U are located. I live north of the Divide where the abandoned hospital used to be has been remodeled, but there are plenty new houses built and historical homes remodeled in the last 20 years north of the Divide. I live in one of those. Good People, good community. No, sorry to say it is segregated, but various ethnicities are in every section of the city.

Race dynamics are certainly at play in Saint Louis. In my youth I attended Washington University. My first apartment was north of Delmar in University City. I wrote a whole bunch of text on Saint Louis race relations but then thought the better of it and deleted it before posting this. I hope things get better. In my experience people are people and there good ones and bad ones wherever you go. Education and hard work will set you free and my time at Washington University really helped me. I wish everyone had the same opportunities.

It's the SAME everywhere. Those properties that are kept CLEAN, increase in value, regardless of "who" lives there. Residents that cannot afford "repairs" to their homes, still have NO EXCUSE letting and leaving trash lay all over their property and alleys and streets. Collectively, there's no excuse why these neighborhoods allow trash to build up, yet demand their property increase equally in value. It takes ZERO money to get out and CLEAN UP your home and neighborhood.
@Marcymarmar6162 ай бұрын
I think it’s so easy for people to say “just clean up your home” without really understanding where it all stems from. Broken homes is a start, then food/job/school deserts. I mean think about. If you have ever met or had a friend with major or chronic depression, cleaning is the least of your concern. To grow up in a house where you don’t have parents to teach you things because they’re out working to survive (if there even are parents who can work), and you grow up in a city that has a history of not caring about you - why would you care to clean? Right? Like if they don’t give a crap about me - why tf would I give a crap. People are just out here trying to survive and it’s EXHAUSTING.

The line of Delmar isn't drawn on social or racial lines. It's a line between where crime is prosecuted and not prosecuted. No one wants a nice house in a neighborhood that they'll get robbed or murdered in.

Forcing appraisers to appraise homes for more money will not magically make those homes worth more money. It will raise their debt levels(availability of HELOC’s).

North side of St Louis, use to be much better than today,one of the main problems is that you have people buying out home owners and these homes sit empty for years. The north side is surrounded with abandoned homes, most of the homes are dilapidated, weeds, nearly 5ft tall, the city allows this, you can call your local officials, they’ll tell you something just so you don’t keep bothering them, are they respond. I was born here in the fifties, and this north side is even worse.It’s to the point that homeowners are depressed the way we have to look at the eyesore in our community surrounding our homes! We can’t understand how they allow people to buy these homes and abandon them and the city does nothing

The Divide wasn't always a divide. The North Side is the old side and was once the place to be. Take a walk or drive N. of Delmar. You can see the remnants of what used to be great neighborhoods. You can see it the churches, the schools, the closed factories, the houses themselves, and the parks. The "Meet Me in St Louie" song and movie about the 1904 World's Fair was written by a girl who lived on Kensington on the Hodimont trolley line, and it was a wealthy neighborhood. Sortsman's Park was close by, and a ton of industry. Now it's all crap...KZbin wont let me say why.

Why is segregation wrong? Like fundamentally? People that are wanting to be around other people want to just be around those other people. Seems short sighted maybe, but wrong? I myself like a diverse place to emerse myself in, but I don't think you should force that on anyone. Why would people want to be around people who don't want to be around them? If the current infrastructure and government of an area doesn't seem fair, go somewhere else. Build the place you want to be in. It might be hard work, but if all people are created equal than surely it is possible to create a good place for yourself. Other people have accomplished this. The only way this isn't possible is if the people just aren't willing to work for that goal.
@runtoth3abyss Жыл бұрын
You're asking why segregation is wrong and then telling people to just go somewhere else. Ignoring the fact that segregation was used to deny people the ability to do exactly that. You are the perfect example of the dunning Kruger effect
@notavailable1216 Жыл бұрын
@@runtoth3abyss well segregation is keeping people out, not keeping them in. It's the idea of isolating or separating, not including or mixing. So not sure how segregation keeps people from going somewhere where the segregationist are not around. Do you think segregationist are keeping people confined in like a prison? I'm pretty sure people are free to leave anywhere. Except a prison, of course. Not sure what that asking a question and stating the reason for the question has to do with overestimation of my cognitive abilities, seems the opposite rather. So not sure dunning Kruger was what you were looking for there. Maybe, ignorance would have been a better point to make, as I was seeking information that I was ignorant to. Also my question was not about the existence of segregation or what it is, it was about the morality of the act itself. The question was how it was wrong, as in wrong to do as a concept. Like what moral objections would a person have to it? Not what negativity results from segregation, but what fundamental tenet of social goodness it's breaking. It feels like it would be equally wrong to be able to decide who you are to be friends with. I mean if someone really wants to be our friend, do we have to be friends with them? Are we morally wrong if we exclude them? Do we morally have to let someone in our house simply because they want in?
