South African here... the stories of these players are so touching because most of us can relate. Both Mapimpi and Lukhanyo are from the same metro I'm from. In error, you said he had nothing and you quickly changed your statement. He truly did not have anything material-wise. He came from a poor village called Tsholomnqa outside East London in the Eastern Cape province. So he truly came from NOTHING and had NO ONE...but look at God!!!! Even Siya's story is similar. Morale of the story: "Just because you are from poverty, it doesn't mean you are poverty." I love you and your channels ❤

Yup, he didn't pick players of colour to tick a box, he picked them on merit and from what I can tell, he already knew a bunch of them from their grassroots days, he spoke about a time when Mapimpi was playing club rugby and while he was fast he still had butter fingers and that after going through a training programme came out the player that we see today. Same with Bongi and the scrum coach, so they've all practically been groomed to play top level rugby since school age whether they went to the best rugby schools or not

Coach Rassie - What many people who are new to rugby don't know is that he was also a Springbok rugby player and in his prime was the best in his position in the world and a natural leader. He declined been Captain because he wasn't in favour with a lot of the politics that interfered with the game. He was ahead of his time with his vision of the game so coaching was a natural progression for him which allowed him to influence so much change that was necessary across many aspects of the game.

Quota's are an insult to the very people claim to help, by saying they not good enough to do it on their own, they need somebody else to help them (a superior saviour who they are indebted to from then on i.e. ANC). The old apartheid is 30yrs in the past mate, it ain't the boogie man anymore, hasn't been for decades, it's all the ANC and their cronies holding the nation back now.

I would say that Siya did get help, particularly early on in his life. There is no such thing as success in isolation. Part of what made him the most deserving captain was because of his background. We are all entitled to our own opinions but personally I think additional support is needed for people who come from poorer backgrounds. Not free rides, not patronising but support and opportunities.

South Africa is a beautiful country, but it's men make life near impossible for women and girls. There's a haunting song tackling the issue called Madoda Sabelani by Loyiso Gijana. Our Stellenbosch University Choir have done a cover of the song. So beautiful, so incredibly haunting, so powerful. You should do a review on it. Makes me sob every time I listen to it. Siya Kolisi himself is also now putting great effort into raising awareness of this issue. May we see change in our country. This is a scourge on our humanity. South Africa has been repeatedly recorded as The Most Unsafe Country for Women and Girls in the World.

The national team is different to a club. Players sign contracts to clubs but the player gets selected to play for the country based on their performance in previous games when they playing for their clubs. This coach doesn't select the best players...he selects based on something called battle stats.. players who give everything on the field to win

Remember guys Soringboks are a National team so selections are like a call to the military. These guys play for Provensional teams as well ( State Team's). So playing for Springboks is like playing for the USA all Stars Or dream team

Each player has a club that he plays for on a professional level. For Springboks games. The officials only call the most performing players from the teams. Then select the squad that is going to present South Africa. Players get selected for every single tournament

I’m guessing that it works out pretty much the same way. The football contracts you’re talking about are for different teams/clubs but not for the National team to represent America somewhere against another country. They have those contracts too. Some play for local rugby teams in South Africa, some play for other clubs in Europe etc. The selection they’re talking about is selection for the National squad (the Springboks) during seasons like the World Cup when it’s nations vs nations instead of mere teams vs teams. So when building the National squad, the coaches look at all the players who play at home and abroad for various clubs, and out of that, they choose the National squad. Every single time. So because you were called up for the last World Cup doesn’t mean you will be called up for this one to represent your country.

To answer y’all questions @16:00 we have our rugby league where players sign 3,4,5 year contracts like the nba/nfl , but the best players in our league for each position are the ones that are selected to represent Springboks. Kinda like back in day Olympics when nba players where selected to represent USA in basketball. Hope that makes sense

On the selection part by 15:50, it's because it's national test rugby so they are selected by the coaches unlike clubs with long term contracts

There is club rugby ( e.g Stormers or Sharks, South African rugby club teams) and International rugby, when you play for Springboks you are playing international rugby to get selected you have to perform well at the club level, and then you will be selected to play for the Springboks.

15:30 In Rugby a squad comprise of 22 players, 15 players are in the playing team and the other 8 are on the bench as replacements incase of injury of fatigue, it not always that all the guys on the bench are used by the coach and some even get sent on the field for the last 5 minutes, so its obvious everyone wants to be in that starting team. 👍

I’ll sum it all up for you as I have over 3 decades of watching the Springboks play and have met many of them personally. Rugby is like a Religion in 🇿🇦! It brings our country together in times when we all feel separated and against one another for what happened in the history of our country (Apartheid) if there is ever a country dealing with racism on a daily it is South Africa. But THE WHOLE NATION comes together whenever we see our boys on the field giving it their all and more! It gives the country hope for a better future one where we all can stand together and GROW AND WIN AS A NATION! Rassie the coach of the Boks once climbed to the roof of the stadium to get a better angle of the game from a bird's eye view (the team was not doing so well and was behind on points). Used the radio to send messages with instructions to the players and THEY WON THE GAME! Crazy stuff! I WHOLEHEARTEDLY BELIEVE THAT RUGBY IS THE BEST SPORT IN THE WORLD!

Perhaps one of the strengths of Rugby as opposed to say American football or even European Soccer, is that in Rugby, each team member must face selection for every International Test Match, rather than being assured a place because of "contractual liabilities". This means that each team playing in such matches, is the absolute best at that particular time. We are I am sure all aware, that in any sport, participants are likely to have occasions when they are not able to give of their very best, either through physical or mental/emotional limitations. We all realise surely that, we Are Not machines and that all will have "off periods". But with selection for each match being the norm, only the best at That Particular time, take to the pitch. It IS the Team which are of Paramount importance, Not Individual players...

The Springboks do not have those contracts to say you will be eligible to play in the squad for the next so years, how it happens is that before there is an international break you get called up to say you will be a part of the team for those games or for a specific tournament and selection is mainly based on current form and sometimes experience too, if you do not perform well that year leading up to a tournament or test rugby and there is someone in your position who has consistently been performing then you probably will not be in the team

on selection; remember the Springboks are the national team, apart from that there's a much larger pool of players who play for several clubs in the country in the national leagues and tournaments. Aside from that the best players in a particular country could be contracted and drafted to foreign clubs in other continents and the national (Springbok) coach has that whole wider pool to select players from and then you have injuries, whether those players playing overseas are playing in their club season right now or not etc. The international team is selected continuously and usually based on people who've trained with the Springbok team, but in South Africa EVERYBODY who plays rugby wants to play for the Springboks, guarenteed and the route to the Springbok team is widely known; from schools and clubs to university teams to provincial clubs up to superrugby clubs or URC clubs

Hi, I know this is a late comment and maybe somebody already said it. But selection is not guaranteed for a national team like the Springboks are. However, they do sign contracts to represent clubs like they do in the nfl or nba, but its not exclusively based in one country. There are various leagues around the world that Springboks play in (Japan, South Africa, France etc). Based on how they are playing at club level determines whether or not they get selected to represent their national team. It is like this for most nations but some like New Zealand make it a requirement that you have to play for a local club in order to represent that specific national team. The Springboks changed their rules in 2017/18 to allow overseas based players to represent the boks as the foreign leagues pay out more money and take some of the financial stress off of the South African Rugby Union, who have a set salary cap in a weak currency (unfortunately our Rand). Absolutely agree... for most South Africans racism is dead... it's how other countries experience racism-actually some other countries are worse... our democracy is still new and most South Africans haven't experienced life abroad to know that racism is alive across the world . The politicians are keeping racism alive because without it they know how to rally for voters...much like across the world in other governments too

Not sure if anyone answered this yet but unlike the NFL. The players are selected from each club to play for the country. It like a all star team in the NBA. Since we play club rugby which is like Cities against each other. Then if you get selected for the springboks you play against France, Canada, Australia, England. The USA has only played in one world cup so far.

I’m a bit late to the party but wanted to leave my comment regarding the call ups and being picked for the team. A player never assumes they’re going to make the squad for certain games or tours. We have so much talent in SA rugby that we have multiple players who can be picked for the same position, it all just depends on who the opposition is as to who is picked. International games are big events and aren’t played as often as one would think but there are many club competitions and each player will have their club that they’re contracted to, just like in the NFL. So whereas football players only play for their NFL team and their big competition finale is the superbowl, rugby players play within their clubs and in various competitions throughout the year and then the best players will get selected and play in international games. Hope this makes sense.

They get selected from their teams to play for the country, remember the springboks is the name of the South African national squad and these players have local clubs they play for and have contracts with. But the springboks is a national call and they get selected from their teams to represent the country.

Springboks is a National team so the players are playing for different teams around the world so about a month before a tournament a team is selected based on their performance at their different teams unlike in USA
