The thing about the South African team I feel is that Rassie makes it known that NO ONE is bigger than the goal, doesn't matter who you are and I think that is what works for them. I found this fascinating. Big respect for Lawes as a player. Always thought he’s one of the few England players who’d be able to play for the Boks, but after this interview I’m not so sure. It’s a mature approach to rugby the ‘it’s just a game’ thing, so I wont knock it but it’s also a bit of a cop out in the case of a professional. You can go 100% in on something without being unbalanced and if you’re representing your country at a WC and you’re not 100% committed, maybe you shouldn’t be there. That being said, if I lost against such a committed bunch I’d probably also be tempted to say ‘it’s just a game’. Still, great player. Each to his own.

We all worship the ground Siya Kolisi is walking, but in the team, he is only a piece of the puzzle to be called out when he slips. I heard in the all-black management there were complaints about how the Springboks played in the final. Now they want running rugby and fewer scrums. Maybe they are treating their players like little golden boys of rugby union. Please, World Rugby, stop tampering with the laws and leave the scrum as it is. The best game ever was S.A. There are videos on KZbin in which he shares this with players and this side of him is also not hidden in the video/TV production on his life. What I love about him is that he has apologised many times when he made mistakes. Always. I'm sure he would love Courtney in his team because Courtney has what It takes and has a strong personality. Both Erasmus and Nienaber know that you won't win every time you go onto the field. Life doesn't work like that; you have two teams on the field, and Nienaber has said many times that you need some luck as well. He put an incredible amount of pressure on himself and was relieved when he achieved his goal. The way forward might be to relax more and to really enjoy it more. Courtney Lawes "... I try not to take it uber uber seriously..." and that right there is why England are not world champions. He doesn't know what we know? Or is it that he doesn't want to know? Gobsmacked by that comment from a professional player who represents his country... That aside I enjoyed this

I guess that's what people don't get. Yes it's a sport and yes we have fun doing it. But South Africans play rugby to win. If it gets harder we go harder. If it gets to taht level we try break taht level. Because we arrogant because we know we are better than what we may be at that moment. If we just gave up we wouldn't be alive on this continent. Shit is hard in Africa

I get the idea England players care more about themselves and their own feelings than the team. If you can't handle critisism in front of your team mates and prefer a 1 on 1 conversation, you deprive a policy of open and honesty. International players are all big, strong and fast. Most international coaches are good, so it comes down to culture, attitude, and mental strength. The Boks have those in spades but their special weapon is purpose! They play for a country whereas guys like Courtney plays for a salary. Go Bokke!!!

Wow you really didn't listen to what he said did you ? Nor do you seemingly understand communication within elite sportsmanship teams between the players and the coaches. Like many top rugby players he sees rugby as a job or a game. Dont fool yourself South African players are no different. Its how they make their living . Outside of the game they gocus on tjeir families, many don't even watch or think about rugby when they are off or away from camp. These are elite rugby players, they are naturally competitive, they strive to play at the highest level .It has nothing to do with patriotism ffs
@Garethjames6967 ай бұрын
How does that work with some of the less consistent players like elton jantjies, manie libbok, willie le roux though? Are those players just getting cooked in front of the team like all the time?
@kurukoei7 ай бұрын
@@patrickchilds2987 oh I did listen, very carefully. By the way, for the Boks it's all about patriotism. You are clearly not South African because your comments regarding the Springboks are way off. Watch Chasing the Sun 2 then you may begin to understand what I'm saying #hulleweetniewatonsweetnie
@kurukoei7 ай бұрын
@@Garethjames696 good question. Rassie has publically stated on various occassions he will never sub a player for making a mistake, so he won't 'cook' them in front of the team. It's about attitude. He was calling out PSDT for showing a submissive attitude on the pitch against Ireland. I recommend watching Chasing the Sun 2 if you haven't, it'll all make sense

Sounds exactly like the environment someone like Farrell would love. Both him and his Dad, probably the most English ‘South Africans’ you can get in terms of there approach to the game. Probably because they’re northerners I suppose

I like Lawes as a player but not sure as a person. Just listened to the whole podcast and it’s almost like it’s hard for him to compliment another non-English player or anything non-English. There’s always a backhanded compliment like they’re good but rugby isn’t everything for me. I don’t know why he comes off like this? Maybe, I’m wrong and I am reading too much into his words and demeanor. He’s a lot different to Biggar, who is excellent on the podcast.
@patrickchilds29877 ай бұрын
Why ? he wasn't critical about the Springbok or the players . Which players in particular did you want him to compliment and for what relating to the content ? I have no idea why you cant just enjoy the content and accept his opinion without desperatly looking for an interpretation of something he said that you can be offended by. Not everything or everyone outside South Africa is against the Springbok ffs
@generalmoralhazard7 ай бұрын
@@patrickchilds2987 who said I was South African? He couldn’t eke out a compliment for Cunningham-South and Exeter Chiefs (who have outperformed Saints), only FW. He just sounds like a sore loser, that’s all who finds it hard to say nice things. Hey, it’s who he is and I will still watch him play.

Re: PSDT being called out, as well as Siya in a different aspect.... The thing is, its never personal. Rassie has cut the lads down to the level that gets all the boys to the same level. Its not calling him out on his abilities... Its saying, don't slump and be disappointed in yourself and walk around with a sad face. You fucked up, own it! Then get back in the game and fuck shit up! This is what other nations don't understand... when you hear the Afrikaans phrase "They don't know what we know"... that's just it. It's pure mental conditioning. They're athletes with superior abilities. But what other nations lack so often is the mental aspect of allowing the game to be bigger than yourself. Its not about you, its about what you're playing for. Done and dusted.

His reaction to PSTD being put in his place is so English. The idea that because what you have done in the past buys you credit for the team right now is so unproductive for winning titles. England has this across all sports, you think that because you reach a certain level of fame or respect you can’t be called out and challenged infront of the group - there is nothing to steady the ship if the coach can’t bang his players’ heads together, get over yourself
