this is the unit used for decades in railroad refrigerator cars...they're loud, they sling oil, and chug along almost forever..

I have a lot of experience with a Detroit diesels - stationary and in trucks. They are bulletproof with minimal service requirements. The side benefit of a Detroit powered generator is - no microprocessors, not even a single transistor. If a big bomb ever went off, your Detroit powered generator would start and run until it ran out of fuel.

Detroit stopped building the 2-71 engine years ago as they don't meet EPA specs as new engines. These are sold as is or completely rebuilt while Detroit Diesel no longer builds the engines new they still manufacture all the parts new. As originally built they ran on number 1 diesel fuel 400 gallons per car when loaded on the west coast and would still have an average of 100-150 gallons of fuel left on board when shut down. I worked for Conrail running a switcher at New England Produce Center averaging 20-40 + cars a day. These reefers replaced the old iced reefers and saved the shippers and railroads a ton of money by not requiring icing enroute. A friend of mine when I told him about the 2-71 genset purchased one in1975 from the contractor that rebuilt them for the railroad and is still using it today. His house is 45 miles from the nearest utility lines. From the first day after installation it fires up on demand only reducing fuel cost. As they advertise this is the last generator you will buy for your home. If I had a need for a generator this is what I'd buy.

Yes these are railroad reefer units, still being used today by some of the smaller railroads. The ones that get the nice paint job are the reconditioned units and deep rebuilds. Our website explains all of this in detail and we appreciate your input. Regards Jeff

After being on the front line of Hurricane Sandy in running my 4k gen, wished I had one of these. Gasoline was hard to aquire and 2-71 Deuce could be hooked up to 275 gal fuel tank or 55 gal drum in maintaining days of nonstop power without heartaches. In my neck of the woods, natural gas utility was compromised via tidal waters. The Deuce three phase flexibility is a positive feature in sharing power with worthy neigbors also in subsidizing fuel costs. The all castiorn Deuce cocstruction will run under extrem adverse conditions in producing plenty of power.

Pocatello, ID, eh? These are gen sets from old UPFE reefers that were purchased from UP. They gave them a nice paint job and made them more convenient electrically, but them frame and all came from a reefer for sure.

Awesome genset, no doubt! I don't need one and I still want one..lol Doing some math, I do know that the 8v71 detroit produced 318 horsepower, and I think something on the order of 950 lb feet of torque. So, if a "Deuce" can be de tuned to produce 20KW , that means roughly 30 horsepower. At that rate of detuning, the 8v71 would only produce 120 hp or so, so, running at 1200 rpm , I can see where the Deuce might well run for a decade non stop without wearing out.

Your research should also indicate that Mr Jeff Matkin purchased the railroad generator set business from Tim Hess the new owner of Emerson Diesel in 1995 which is now Cascade Diesel. Also Matkin has been instrumental in keeping this genset package from the becoming obsolete. It is one thing to design and build a product and another to believe in and invest millions to keep it going. Thank you. Jeff Matkin

Just like to add, that for 24/7 generator power you might want to consider propane or natural gas instead of diesel.

Great video! I have a bit of an unorthodox question / request; is there any way I you could post a clip of a 2-71 starting up, running for a few seconds, then shutting down? I'm a model railroader, and I'm trying to add sound to a model refrigerator car. I understand these 2-71s were the same type that ran in many of them, and I'm trying to get a good, clean sound file to manipulate and include in a chip to install in a model. Weird, I know, but any help would be appreciated!

@emerson4436 WVO operation is a plus that I would want on a genset. If these can be started remotely with an "exercise option". then switch remotely to WVO when up to temp./purge back to petrodiesel before shutdown, that would be one helluva deal. Half the trick of running WVO is to have it hot enough to spray like petrodiesel. The other half is to have it dewatered and filtered very well.

@dieselheart001 Hello sir, we have test cell reports that we are working on publishing on our website and will have a WVO kit that we are developing now.The reports will show that these are started on diesel fuel and then switched to WVO and ran at full load with absolutely no change in performance, you do switch it back to diesel prior to shutdown so you have the diesel to start on the next time. Regards Jeff

Hello, nice engine. how does it work, normally in the U.S. generators turn at 3600rpm 2-poles or 1800rpm 4-poles to get the 60 Hertz, so you must have a transmission or a 6-poles generator? How many poles does the "Deuce" have?

Hello are you going to be running this unit all the time or just for standby? If it's standby you might setup a co-op with your neighbors to share your power at a reasonable cost and I would bet they will putup with the noise to have power, also we have silencer options for the "The Deuce", is yours a detroit diesel? A brick enclosure works well, wood insulated like a big dog house or bales of hay or straw stacked around( I would only do this for diesel units). Hope this helps> Thanks Jeff

I wish I had one of these ,,it sounds awesome and would fit right in with my 8V92 powered jeep J30 and 6V71 powered jeep wagoneer my farm has a large generator which my grandfather bought used in 1980 it has a cummins 4BT engine and as of my last check it has just shy of 15,000 hours on it ,,it is a 40KW 120/240V genset and only uses 1.5 gal per hour at 50% load ,,I might consider buying one of these because my generator gets run a lot and it's maintenance costs are getting high I have seen other people ask the question about the waste vegetable oil and am curious how well the detroit engines run on it cause I run my cummins and my big detroits on it and it runs good but not sure about the smaller ones and nobody seems able or willing to answer my questions,,and the GM shop can't or won't help ,,and I know Biodiesel wasn't even thought of when these were built

even though these are 20kw units for maximum reliability they were usually run at less than 50% output, at full output they probably burn closer to 1.5-1.75 gph. still very good for a 20kw generator.

The biggest 2 stroke Detroit ever produced was the 149 series. Specifically the 20v149. There was a smaller V16 and V12 variant in the 149 series as well. The 71 series engines go up to a 24v71 (essentially 2 12v71s bolted together) or the inline variant up to 6-71.
