Autistic girl here and im one of the many who are very confused and conflicted about this. Not everything is about woman-hating and as a feminist I wish people would think more before saying things like this, it's cringe and totally misses the point and gives ammo to misogynists who see any kind of calling out of actual discrimination as "playing the sexism card" (for the record not saying Dev did or didn't do anything wrong, I dont feel I understand the situation enough to state either way, but I'm just saying people are allowed to find it tricky to understand things like tone or intent or message sometimes [like many autistic people do] or feel upset about something a woman does without it being misogyny.......)

Don't rush it, and don't nearly kill yourself like I did earlier in my career. 'How bad do you want it?' is a dangerous culty kind of POV. I got seriously messed up as a kid reading Randy Jackson's music industry advice book, which would say stuff like that. Basically, 'how bad do you want it?' is egging us, guilting us on, training for how to be a sociopath, because that's the necessity for success in the music industry - thick skin, needing to want to be famous above all else, basically so that higher powers can control you to do whatever they want you to do... whether thats a record label, or an algorithm. The 'it' is a very narrow version of what being a musician or artist is - and the fact that I couldn't make myself want that anymore at a certain point, filled me with profound amounts of guilt and self-loathing - and terror at admitting that to anyone. So I kept on acting like I wanted that fame - but I burned myself out going down that road. As a former child actor & singer, I felt like a washed-up has-been at 15-16. That book and that mentality caused me a lot of trauma and self-bullying and darkness. But gradually, I realized how even fame, financial freedom even - means nothing - and I had brushes with both - viral and conventional. I also worked with lots of famous people and got to see their psychology close-up. Sure, it would have been nice to have a hit before I realized the futility of it all - but in a way, it'd be nicer now on the other side of all that chaos - and still, even then, just as nice as making any song for anyone. All that matters is if you make something you love that you think deserves to exist. You may not even know the people it impacts, the way it touches people - most of the time you won't. But you might have saved a life by putting artistic integrity first. Art and commerce don't mix very well, especially with a nearly deceased middle class, and LA is by and large an entertainment cult where people will do whatever they can to get ahead, and its very hard to tell the sociopaths from the genuine people much of the time. But when you're a sociopath, the victories are a lot more hollow - PLUS you don't enjoy the journey at all. Enjoy the journey, which you're brilliant at - you've got such a lovely sense of humor and self. Don't trick ppl, and not every single is going to be a smash. Sometimes 10 years down the line the song will get a new life, sometimes 50 years, 100... but the point is, if you love it, someone out there will love it. And when you're true to yourself for long enough... you may not get a huge huge audience, but with savvy, you'll have enough of one to sustain yourself in some modest way (Once they truly take that away... we revolt). And most importantly - you'll be the contribution you're meant to be. And you may even save lives through some elaborate butterfly effect that way. Some people are meant to impact millions, others are meant to just impact a few - and some of those few could be the ones who are meant to impact millions. Its all symbiotic, and the cream - directly or indirectly - rises. And now time to sound really heady and Alan Wattsy - its all a lesson in how the ego is an illusion, and I wish we could just get that instantly, but thats a lesson we need to get through living through enough of our egos deepest darkest fears. If its just a concept, it doesn't sink in. Anyways. Consider there's no separation between any one person, and your success is not your own, nor is Beyonces and her squad, nor this person or that persons. We're all just, at our best, making contributions to art with varying degrees of authenticity - and they're all equally valid, and they all influence each other in infinite, incalculable ways and bring us all closer to greater and greater authenticity. As long as we're creating, we deserve to get satisfaction from the success of everyone and anyone, because we're all in this together - there's no seperation, and we're always all influencing each other, writing each others songs without writing. That's all there is. There's no 'your success' or 'your hit'. 'How bad do you want it?' AKA, 'how bad do you want the illusion of ego' ... we all want it to a degree, but there's no shame in evolving beyond it. In fact, it becomes a necessity at some point - or else premature death, which litters the music industry - all because people let ego and trauma be their fuel, rather than having the courage to discover whats beyond those juvenile motivators. Growth can feel like chaos. Thats part of the ride.

If you're gonna say what you did, making obvious sarcastic comments is gonna change the vibes of the video and give off conflicting ideas. Now I have no idea what she meant with this video and I tried to find something relevant in her channel, there was nothing, and now I feel no inclination to stay. Bad strat imo.

Dev you really gotta include snippets of your songs IN these videos. I've been watching for so long but still haven't heard any of your stuff, and I would say it's a combination of it not being on this same channel, and me not knowing the genre / what it sounds like at all. The youtubers Luscent ("songwriter reacts to" videos) and QueerKiwi (reactions to reddit posts memes, and more all things queer and straight even) both use an outro with the song they're promoting at the time or a certain one and that let me know what their music sounded like to know if i should check it out or not. Even a snippet at the time OF saying "check it out" would be way more convincing even if you're trying to make your self promos as short as possible. I'm sure I will listen someday, but as a supporter so far loving your videos I think that would help!

I had hoped this was to bring awareness to the dangers of things being thrown on stage, but this video doesn't give that vibe at all. Honestly I feel like this sets a pretty bad example to both artists and audiences. You also put that venue's reputation at risk, even if they were in on it. Specifically calling out the security team was unnecessary. Way more people are going to see that tiktok and think it's real, than will see this video. Even lying to your friends about it? Letting them think you actually got hit with a real hammer? I really don't understand the thought process. The way this video is presented, it comes across like this is satire, but the concerned comments from fans and strangers alike make me think you really did do this for attention. I'm sure I'm going to get a lot of hate from all the fans I see saying "wow Dev is a genius I really thought she got hit with a hammer I was so worried" but I felt like someone needed to say it. If you wanted to pull a stunt to get attention, there were other ways to do it. You could have gone extremely elaborate with this, fake blood and everything, and then announced that it was fake (while still on stage and included in the tiktok) and that you did it to raise awareness for what's happening in the concert culture lately. I really think that would have blown up more than this and had much less backlash.

Sometimes people just don't understand or realise things but that's entirely separate from media literacy and I'd thank you not to add to the pile of ableist bile about us, calling us stupid or illiterate or uneducated. P.s. if there's a huge number of people confused in the comments it's not "obvious" enough to actually be satire.

I don't know how else to put this, but honestly, this made me lose a lot of respect for you. It feels like you're exploiting the very real attacks some other artists experienced for clout. It would've been an entirely different story had you been open about it from the start. But the first time I found out about this whole thing was in your previous video, right after you talked about what happened to other artists. Which again, were very much real attacks. And you decided that would be a good opportunity to double down on this ... lie. I don't know what else to call this. I really hope this doesn't end up happening, but I can already picture the reactions the next time an artists gets something thrown at them on stage. Calling it fake, attention seeking, staged, all that ...

@@johnysharki5694 Sure, people make mistakes all the time. I'm not "mad at her" for making a silly mistake. I'm sure everyone at the show had a good time with that gag. What I take issue with is her - in a video about real attacks on artists - using this "risky prank" as an example and making it appear just as real. Which, as I said in my original comment, might lead to people not taking legit attacks seriously and thinking they're just for attention too. I hope this doesn't happen of course, but when you have a following this big, you have to think about what effects your content could have at least a tiny bit. And she didn't do that.
@tayloreh
@tayloreh 10 ай бұрын
Kudos for owning the mistake, but yeah... I LOVE this as a piece of fiction to satirize how far artists will go for clout in our current dystopic music industry. But once you actually do it... its just sad. And it takes away a sense of seriousness from people who are actually abused on stage. You're young, and I love that you're trying things - but yeah, please listen to your manager going forward. Focus on the art not on the gimmicks, as tempting as they are. More musicians gotta be just musicians again, not glorified performance artists/influencers who happen to make music. If you want staying power, put the music first. I really hope this doesn't hurt your success long term, and please don't be rough on yourself about it, but still - feel the impact lying like that has, and I hope you apologise for how it makes it harder for people to trust real audience/artist assault situations. Not cool.

Fully agree, although I do think that musicians don't really have the choice to just be musicians anymore if they want to get big and they don't luck out. This whole stunt was def in poor taste but I feel something like this was kind of inevitable when you force musicians to do their own publicity (and the same is happening with authors, visual artists, etc atm). The world would definitely be a better place if artists could just focus on the art

I know I might sound like a prude for saying this but honestly this is a pretty vile ‘joke’ to play on your audience dude, if it were to be handled better by having something less serious like a plush or something soft the backlash wouldn’t of been as bad. And I know 'having something less serious wouldn’t of gone as viral' but what you did just feels insensitive and gross compared to other artists who have to deal with this. It might be funny for you, but this is the internet. People are going to see your video go viral and there’s going to be a chance that someone is going to try to do the same thing at another artist’s show with the REAL DEAL. It baffles me how many people are saying how ‘genius and hilarious' this is, but it’s more so feels like the boy who cried wolf on an ACTUAL problem and turned it into a joke. Especially with your own friends not even knowing about it, and you said you had to play it up with them to keep them from saying anything?! It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I’m not one to leave hate comments on peoples videos but this is just messed up, do better.

Like this shit is unhinged af to the point where I can almost understand people leaving your fanbase if they were really concerned and found out this way. But like it’s also so crazy and borderline genius in like a Sacha Baron Cohen way that I have to say I admire the audacity of the joke. It crosses the line imo, you don't see comedians like Sasha baren Cohen or Nathan fielder doing stunts that make them look like victims of serious crimes that genuinely make their friends and family concerned about their mental well-being. This would probably traumatize someone if it happened for real (which it easily can). It's also just a red flag imo, imagine the kind of person that can easily lie to their friends and family about an assault that didn't actually happen, even for the sake of doing a bit that's weird as fuck

I generally enjoy your content but yeah I'm not a fan of this. It's one thing to troll your fans like Danny Gonzalez does, but causing not only your fans, but your own friends to be genuinely concerned about your safety and then lying to them about what happened is very offputting to me. Not only that, but it could lead to "boy who cried wolf" situations for other people down the line; people already think everything is fake as is and this definitely will not help. Just a bad idea all around, and I think it was a strange decision to go ahead with it even after your own manager told you he hated the whole concept. I'm not gonna unsubscribe over this or anything but I'm definitely side-eyeing you a bit lol. Just so people don't think I'm trying to "cancel" anyone here (I'm not), some advice: like another commenter said, if the goal is simply to promote your own music, for starters it would be good to include teasers of your songs in your other videos (Nick doing this in his own videos is actually how I found out about Queef Jerky, for example). Beyond that, I don't know a whole bunch about music promotion, but I'd think that doing more gigs with bigger artists is bound to help at least a little bit. The Plain White T's aren't household names anymore, but it's not like they're super obscure either...they were absolutely massive in the 2000s and Hey There Delilah is still one of the most recognizable songs from that period. Either way, my point is that you seem to have some good industry contacts so, might as well use them. Overall, hopefully this didn't come off as super condescending or anything because I do genuinely want to see you do well, but I just don't think this experiment was the move.
