When I was a kid, my parents said I had to choose between MSTS and Trainz 2004 because there wasn't enough room on the computer for both. I chose Trainz 2004 because it felt more customizable and the camera was more free-roaming. (I've seen people use a free-roaming camera on KZbin, but could never figure out how to do it) Not only that, but we frequently had a problem in MSTS where we'd download a new train, but couldn't drive it because of a "failed to create cab view" message that would instantly crash the game. (We also had issues in TRS2004 with missing dependencies because of how difficult content manager was to figure out back then, but at least it never crashed the game. Fast-forward to today, and I feel like I made the right choice. I recently learned how to make content in Blender, so now whenever I need something, I can just make it. (I've been practicing on lighthouses to see how my textures look in-game.)

I'm really sorry this video took seemingly forever to release. Personal matters and college really have been a huge pain in the ass as of recent and really delayed this video, but I do hope the wait was worth it as I'm quite proud of this project. Big thanks to my friends Mountain Ridge Films, Michelle C., and Kauai Pacific Railroad Productions (their channel links are in the description) for recording the Trainz 12, and some Trainz: A New Era scenes for me too! Trainz has been a part of my life for nearly 10 years at this point, so I hoped to inject as much passion as possible into this. Without Trainz, I'm not sure my channel would be in the position it is now. It was the first type of videos I uploaded that got me on the algorithm in the first place! Either way, I hope you enjoy this historical look and retrospective on the Trainz series!

My earliest Trainz memory was when I downloaded the demo versions of TRS2004 and TRS2006 in 2008, when I was 11 years old. TRS2006 demo didn't have surveyor, but the TRS2004 demo did, and I really liked the customization feature. I believe it was sometime later when I got the full version of TRS2006, and that was when I downloaded custom content (mainly trains). From there, I would go on to TS2009 in 2010, TS12 in 2012, and (briefly due to having weak computer with no graphics accelerator and little RAM) TANE in 2016. I'm 26 now, and I recently bought TRS2022 and I'm getting an graphics accelerator card and additional RAM to get the most out of it. I wouldn't be there today if weren't for 11-year old me downloading the demo versions of TRS2004 and TRS2006 all those years ago.

It is a passion that I cannot explain, I already had all the simulators, but Trainz is my favorite, by far, mainly for its spectacular ability to create routes and the multitude of assets created by the fans. Something I'm sad that was not mentioned was that original copies of Trainz 2004, had experimented with animated passengers that would walk onto the platform and into the passengers coaches and sit down. These animated passengers were quickly removed during the first patch. 2021 and (as far as I know) passengers are mainly still static.

@@NJP76 I feel you on that. TRS2006 was my intro to the Trainz brand. I still have the 5 CD case it came in, actually. Even after getting the newer games, I just haven't been able to get into the newer routes as much as the ten that were native to TRS2006.

Funny how I'm an almost 100% Railworks/TS2021 user and still enjoyed this video thoroughly.

A very enjoyable and informative video, agreed to that. I am not a part of the Trainz community but it was still very interesting and I might try and dabble in Trainz too. I am currently more of an Open Rails user (with Indian Railways MSTS content).

I've been playing Trainz since UTC so its always held a special place in my heart. It may not be the most realistic Train Sim, nor the most popular Train Sim but I love it for its customizability and user-friendly design. Its so easy to use and navigate - and Surveyor with its many tools allows you to easily to build your own route, something I found other Train Sims lack.

I remember seeing the cover for Trains 2012 as a kid and being in awe of the engine. I was in a different country then and couldn't afford to but it tho lol.

I'm so used to watching histories of games and hearing of a dark turn in the history - Atari buying Roller Coaster tycoon, Bethesda releasing Fallout 76 - so I was expecting something like "but then they didn't deliver on the kickstarter promises at all." Props to these devs, they know what their people want and they're okay with not trying to grab some gigantic larger market. I've only played a trainz game on iOS, but maybe at some point I'll pick one of them up. I'm not keen though on having to buy $14 DLC to play with the American steam I want though.

When I was younger, I really wanted to get Trainz 12. Unfortunately, the computers in our house at the time would have never been able to handle the stress from the game. Probably a good thing I didn’t get it then.

A great video with a few unknown things to me. I've been with Trainz from the Original Trainz release although my first 'deep dive' was with 2004. And I did not start with route building until version 2009. I subscribed.

Trainz was my first train simulator when I was little It was so easy to use, young me was able to make simple routes and run trains around them The game was super simple, yet very fun to play When I found a copy of DTGs train sim and tried to make a route, I would always go back to "If only they had the same system as Trainz" Trainz still stands as my favorite train simulator of all time
