Wow, Mufti Taha is so elegant in his manner of conveying history. Such a masterful scholar of Islam alhamdu lilllah. The logic in his arguments is so clear and his explanations are so comprehensive. May Allah grant him Jannah.

Not many people know that Mufti Taha Karaan came out first in Deoband, out of a class of 600, despite not having spoken a word of Urdu when he arrived there. May Allah grant him Jannatul Firdous.

Wasn’t the Mufti shafi'i in madhhab? How come he went to Deoband, which is a Hanafi-Madrasah?

@@pain123444 Mufti Taha Karaan was simply following in his fathers footsteps who also studied in Deoband. How did his father end up studying in Deoband: Mawlana Yusuf Karaan, the distinguished father of al-Shafi' al-Saghir Mawlana Taha Karaan, was a guest at the Dar al-'Ulum Zakariyyah where he conducted a majlis program. Below is a brief summary of the majlis: Mawlana Yusuf, was the first 'alim from the Cape to graduate from the prestigious Dar al-'Ulum Deoband. Mawlana Yusuf Karaan mentions at the start that he wanted to become an academic. He then gets an opportunity to teach Afrikaans and Qir'ah at a school in Glencoe, South Africa. This is where he sees a poster under the name of the Jamiatul Ulama KZN who are offering to send prospective students to India to learn deen. He writes a letter with his CV and gets a reply from Mawlana 'Abd al-Haqq Omarjee who asks him to go to Wasbank for an interview with Mawlana Cassim Seema. Mawlana Seema asks him to get ready to leave for India. Mawlana Yusuf leaves for India - not knowing where he is going, which institute, which city or village, etc. He lands in Bombay (Mumbai) and here he mentions a humorous incident of difficulty in communication he encounters. He had come to India in pursuit of deen, to learn deen in a language he did not know - Urdu. Then he mentions the majlis of Shaykh al-Islam Mawlana Madani, Mawlana Raipuri and Shaykh Zakariyyah. Mawlana Madani was in Deoband but due to his ill health etc. had stopped teaching. Mawlana Karaan says that day he did not know how fortunate he was to be in this gathering. Before proceeding to India he was not aware and did not know the names of Qasim Nanautwi, Mahmud al-Hasan, Ashraf 'Ali Thanawi, Khalil Ahmad Saharanpuri. Only in Deoband he found out about these personalities. He says, he has not a single drop of Indian blood in his lineage, his family originates from a village in the Indonesian islands of Java, he now says that these 'ulama are his fathers. He asks the Shi'ah, and the Ahl al-Hadith: Bring forth a like to these 'ulama? From not knowing a word of Urdu at the end of the first year of study Mawlana Yusuf was able to translate all the letters written by Nabi S.A.W to the rulers from Urdu to English. He learnt Urdu with the help of another South Africa student in Deoband. He went on to translate many of the Urdu kutub of the Ulama of Deoband into English. Finally, Mawlana Shabbir Saloojee asks him to elaborate on the term "Deobandism" so Mawlana responds saying it is two words: Ittiba' Sunnah and Ittiba' Qur'an - follow the Qur'an and Sunnah. Majlis Ends.

This particular lecture was conducted in 2011 at the Bosmont Masjid in Johannesburg South Africa. The topic was : The history of the Shafi school in South Africa.
