The Duke of Burgundy was Louis XV's father. It's commonly speculated that had he lived long enough, things would have been better for France possibly even preventing the revolution. However, if it's his inaction and refusal to heed good counsel as shown in this video is the way he would have reigned had he lived longer, then France would be better off had he not reigned at all. If that's the case, it's a good thing he died young.

'Winning', for any length of time, in the Wars of the Spanish Succession, seems impossible, and participation pointless. If you gained and held on to an area or province you just succeeded in partitioning it for a while. Look at all those little states / duchies / provinces dotted around the map, and the myriad of competing powers.

If you can follow the fanciful pronunciation of people's and places' names, it may be. The delivery is so garbled that I lost the names in the sentence time after time, even having heard it once. Reading the names on the map is the only way you can follow it.

Just saying but this battle really interests me and the reason this battle interests me is during this battle King George the 2nd of Great Britain 🇬🇧 was fighting in this battle and he was the last monarch to fight on the battlefield with his troops.

I am absolutely furious at Burgundy!!! Had he engaged it likely would have turned the tide….if I was Louis XIV I would investigated for treason and personally beat the living shit outta him. Wtaf??? I’m English but even I am DUMB FOUNDED at Burgundy’s inaction! Was there an ulterior motive?? Did he hate Vandome that much he let him lose? Was he secretly paid off by the British?? None of us were there so we can’t judge too harshly, but damn it seems astounding that he didn’t attack

Vendome should not have joined the fight about groenwald because by doing so he lost control of the battle. He was a marshal and charged with control of the army but wond up fighting in the front line like a private soldier. Churchill makes this point

Why would this "keep the Dutch in check" 16:30?
@FieldMarshalYT
@FieldMarshalYT 2 жыл бұрын
They were worried about leaving Flanders vulnerable to another French offensive. Keeping them closer to the Netherlands itself made them more willing to commit troops to an offensive war, which the Dutch were not a fan of for a while at this point.

Please don’t use the German pronunciation of Eugene. I know you hear it with the story around the German battleship Bismarck in WWII but there “oigen” is appropriate. A more French pronunciation is better for the Prince of Savoy.

Pronunciation points : the names 'Eugene' and 'Bruges' have long-accepted pronunciations when used in English conversation, despite being French proper nouns. For the sake of comprehension by an English speaking audience (and non-native speakers should are expecting R.P. - 'received' English pronunciation - to be able to follow it), these should be adhered to. Eugene is pronounced "You-jeen", with the stress on the first syllable. The Belgian city of 'Bruges' is pronounced 'Brooj", with a soft 'J' at the end, as in the French name 'Jean' (not the American 'Gene', as in Gene Hackman). Berwick is a historically important town on the border between England and Scotland, and has always been pronounced "Ber-rick", with the stress on the first syllable. Even though the French general mentioned in this video had been educated in France, he was a nobleman who would not have grown up mispronouncing his own dukedom ! Especially as was of English lineage. 'Marlborough' has long been mispronounced by Americans, like all Anglo-Saxon place-names ending in 'borough', so recognition of these names is not a problem in English conversation. (It's 'Marl-burru', btw). Googling these names or their pronunciation before recording these videos would avoid leaving behind large sections of your audience, but a word of caution; don't rely on Google itself, which unfortunately relies on mainly American contributors, although they do their best to list British English pronunciations. BBC documentaries are more reliable sources. As it is, an educated English speaker loses the thread of your narrative with every reference to these people and places, and someone who can't see the names on the map would be completely lost, unless they were an adolescent American, presumably.
