Hey all, I covered the disappearance of Maurice Dametz around five years ago now. Believe it or not, it was one of the first disappearances I ever covered on this channel. However, I'd only set aside around less than five minutes in the entire video to share and discuss it. Many point to this disappearance and consider it among the stranger cases, so I thought I'd come back and be more thorough.

Since Maurice was 84 years old, he would had also be hearing impaired to some degree. In such a case, he would not had been able to hear his friend calling out to him nor the sound of the car horn his friend blared to signal to him or if he did his impaired hearing would had made it impossible for him to determine correctly the direction of the sound he heard. If such is the case, he would had walked in the wrong direction and gotten lost. I know Adam believes Maurice could not have gotten far, but consider how long was it before a search team arrive on scene. Even if Maurice had bad knees, it is obvious he could walk 200 yards, so it is not unreasonable to believe given the amount of time that passed before searchers arrived and started their search that he could had been miles away. And with each passing day, he would had gone even farther. One last point to consider, mining is Colorado's earliest long running (and still is today) industry. In the Pike National Forest alone, there are over 12,391 mining claims - 1,059 active and 11,332 closed. It is possible he may have fallen into one of these abandoned mines. Here is an article to read about the abandoned mines and the hazards they pose to hikers - www.durangoherald.com/articles/how-do-you-keep-colorado-hikers-from-falling-300-feet-down-a-mine-shaft-foam/

We don't really KNOW he ever made it to the dig site. All we have is the word of his dig partner. If mr. Dametz died or was killed WELL before the digging trip, they could've buried him someplace completely different and just made up a trip to dig for topaz, as well as his disappearance, to cover the fact that he's no longer alive.

My favorite story is the one in New Jersey where a man and his BOW, RIFLE, backpack, and entire self disappeared. They All went hunting, and the older man stuck by the truck as he couldn’t walk more than a few feet. They went deer hunting and he stuck by the truck-he couldn’t walk more than a mile without help especially not on rough terrain. He went with his brothers and kids I think. They came back to the truck and he was gone. No good rappers. No backpack. No rifle. No bow. The green berets came within 24 hours. They searched the entire area never finding one food wrapper or anything at all. A man can’t disappear with a huge bow and rifle without a trace. It always gives me the chills. Nothing was ever found. It sounds very similar to this. But this guy went with all his family and they all fanned out except for him.

This is one of those cases in which there are really only two options. Firstly, it could be that the fundamental facts of the case are wrong, i.e., the partner was lying about what happened, did something to the missing person, wasn't where he claimed they were, etc. But if the partner committed some criminal act, then he did it in such a way that it was the perfect crime--no evidence, no discernible motvie, and done in a way so as not to raise any suspicions with either the family or law enforcement, whose job it is to be suspicious. If we are going to accept this scenario then motive becomes incredibly important, because someone--presumably the rock hunting partner--made a geriatric retired theologian disappear. He didn't just kill him, he literally made him disappear. So the issue isn't simply "why would anyone want to harm/kill the man," the issue is the far more perplexing, "why would someone want to erase him from the face of the earth?" I suppose it's easier to get away with a murder when there is no body or crime scene, but given the logistics of making an elderly theologian disappear, and given his age and infirmity, it seems that the much more reasonable thing for a potential murderer to do would have been to try make it look like an accident or play it off as the natural death of a person in ill health. So at the very least, if a crime was committed, someone pulled it off brilliantly. The second option we can accept for a possible explanation is that an unknown force or combination of forces acted in a way we do not currently understand. And that's it. If the facts of the case are as stated, there aren't any other explanations. Something made the doc disappear, and it was either (a) preternaturally skilled human(s), or it was a heretofore unknown phenomenon. I can't decide which way Occam's Razor cuts with this one.

Occam's Razor is just that the simplest explanation is usually the correct one....but not every mystery will have a simple explanation. That being said, there have been cases where someone appeared to disappear off the face of the earth, in an area which is searched repeatedly, and which is fairly open landscape (so not easy to lose something, supposedly) like a desert, but some time later, the body does end up being found and the explanation for their disappearance is blindingly simple but completely unexpected. And also completely logical. One case was a man who disappeared in the desert, the area he disappeared was searched repeatedly, he was never found and dogs couldn't track him. Some years passed, and eventually someone, who was very interested in the disappearance, went to see if HE could figure it out....and he did. But completely accidentally. He happened to look down, as he was searching the area, and he saw a small opening that disappeared under a bush (one of those big sagebrushes) and when he decided to examine it, he realized it was a big hole. It had been some kind of opening down into something like a well, which had been completely forgotten about over the years, and the missing guy had not seen the hole, fell in, got knocked out and died of thirst eventually. They found his bones in there.

@@patriciajrs46 Yes, unfortunately dehydration will kill you pretty quickly. Especially children. That being said, although in the case I described it was a full-grown mám who died, but whose disappearance was solved posthumously, there are cases I can't explain (nor can anyone else, so far) of children disappearing for days and weeks and then being found, in an area already searched repeatedly, with only minor scratches. Other than that, there's no sign of dehydration or anything else. THOSE cases are truly bizarre. An adult could not survive that long without food and water but these children do. In these cases, Occam's razor should suggest that the children have been looked after by a person and then returned to the site of their disappearance ....but there's no evidence at all that this is the case. The children themselves give extremely strange answers as to what happened to them.

Sadly not all animal predation is obvious. Mountain lions kill with a single bite to the neck from behind and then drag the body away and usually up a tree. This would make it very hard for searchers to find and it would cover the human scent of the body with the very strong stick of cougar, which would render search dogs less useful. Mountain lions will also sometimes cover their kills with piles of branches and debris to try and hide it from bears and other scavengers.

I don't know why but when you read a part of the wife's letter, when you said carried away, " Thunderbird " popped into my mind. I'm not really into cryptozoology that much, but it would almost have to be that type of situation. He couldn't walk that far, a person physically couldn't carry him that far most likely, and there were no sounds of wild animals, but there's no sign of him. I guess another altern alternative is he died in an accident, and the friend didn't want to be blamed directly for his death. Maybe he thought that saying he must have wandered off was better than he fell down a rock face while he was with me? But those are the only two theories that I can think of.

Glad you revisted this one in more detail. I have always wondered what evidence there was to support the companion's version of events. I presume there must be some. Yet - Occam's razor - if there's no rational explanation for Maurice's disappearance in the forest, was he ever there at all? However, if Maurice never arrived at the park, I find it hard to believe the companion would come up with such an elaborate scenario to explain his disappearance that relies absolutely on there being no other visitors in and around the nearby picnic area. Even in a vast National Park, could you guarantee no witnesses who could testify they never saw Maurice with the companion? PS How are signs of digging evidence Maurice was there? A bit of a hole could be dug by anyone. Let me know if I'm being daft.

There are a bunch of cases where people have disappeared in the wilderness near a road where someone may have inadvertently picked them up by their own volition. Who’s to say that while Maurice’s caretaker was putting his things away at his dig location that someone in a vehicle managed to creep by without him noticing and convinced Maurice to get in their vehicle for whatever reason. We also have to remember that there are truly sick and depraved people out there who intentionally prey on easy targets whenever the opportunity arises. Maybe a serial killer who was passing by saw Maurice by himself as an easy victim and somehow managed to get him inside his vehicle only to be carted off and killed in a completely different location far from where he was originally. Maybe that was the motive all together. The simple fact is we just don’t know but to me this scenario sounds extremely plausible. People get abducted in a blink of an eye all the time and if he was close to the road when he entered this persons car then he wouldn’t have left much of a scent. Again, this type of scenario This sort of thing happens all the time.

I think you are seriously underestimating a man's capability when either he sets his mind to it or his life depends on it. One of two things happened here. 1. He did want to end his life on his terms and willfully walked away using the last if his energy and capabilites. We was obviously well enough to have walked approx 400 yards on uneven terrain already and spent hours digging in a hole for rocks. He's not that bad off! 2. He finished packing up before his friend and decided to walk over to him about 100 to 200 yards away. Except he misjudged the direction and suddenly found himself turned around. As an avid hiker I can tell you it doesn't take long at all to get turned around. Especially off trail as they were and even in areas you've been before. It's easier than you think. Then he keeps walking thinking he'll walk his way out and thinking he's going in the right direction. But he was going in the wrong direction! When your life is on the line your body is capable of amazing feats. I'm sure he could walk for many many miles if his life depended on it. You keep comparing his ability to his day to day ability in which he is not trying to exert himself or injure himself and may even play it up a bit for some care and sympathy. You can't compare to his daily around the house ability with his life on the line hike out ability. No comparison. I'm not sure which of the two reasons it was, but 99% sure he walked away himself into the deep national Forrest never to be seen again.

And again in so many videos you greatly overestimate the "ease and certainty" of easily finding someone in the woods. I don't blame you. You're from the UK and a youtuber on a pc. I guess I guess I shouldn't assume your situation but your constant assumption that these people should have been found by search teams or dogs leads me to my conclusion. You don't understand just how vast a Forrest is and just how hard it is to find someone in a forrest. Even with hundreds of searchers and dogs.... Not knowing which way someone went with hundreds amd thousands of acres in all directions in even the smallest of forrests it's like looking for a penny in a large city. You could even get close to it and still not see it. You could take hundreds of people all walking dozen miles and then look at an overview map of the area they actually touched and you wouldn't even be able to see the spots on a map the size of a tennis court. You just don't understand the scales here. Anyway....... yeah it's pretty tough.

There's always strange little commonalities among these cases no matter where on this planet they occur i.e. tracking dogs can't find a scent or they do but it just stops like the person just disintegrated or vanished in some manner, people with them see them one minute and then gone the next,if they do find the person or a body it's in a place that everybody and their damned brother has gone over with a fine tooth comb and yet all the sudden here they be. Because of that I'm very open to it being a unusual answer of what is going on be it sasquatch,dogmen/werewolves,thunderbirds,aliens,time slips or whatever else.

The simple fact that dogs can't trace or loses a scent, tells me that the missing are literally disappearing into thin air either because of some portal that they walked into or an alien abduction. That's my own personal belief in these disappearances.

The only idea I have is that someone used a gun or knife to cause him to move somewhere and hide him till his friend left to go to the car. He could have been told to remain quiet or be killed, so he did not call out. He could also have been told that his friend would be murderd if he called out. After his friend left for the car, the person then started to move him somewhere to a vehicle. They could also have laid some sort of scent cover or scent destroyer to stop the dogs finding the scent. It might have taken a while to get him moved, but how long did it take help to meet up with his friend and start searching. I doubt the theory of him going to God as you don’t take your body to heaven. The family admitted that the idea he was taken and be in pain or kept from them would cause them to much discomfort. The brain does funny things in these scenarios and comes up with ideas that the body can comfortably cope with, hence the idea of him being taken to God. I guessing he was murdered by the person who took him and his body buried or destroyed elsewhere. He might have even been told that his family would be attacked if he tried to escape or call out for help. Possibly he went knowing he would never be found, but knowing that his friend would not be harmed.

I remember this one. I don’t think he was carried out of there because he was never there to begin with. but it was made to look like he was. This younger companion of his… I heard he got together with his wife a year or so later. Don’t know if there’s any truth to it. But he was the last one to supposedly see him alive. I would’ve really looked at it closely

The problem with these cases, as reported in the Mass Media, is that only the surface is scratched. An in-depth investigation and its findings you will not see. I suppose on a platform , like YTube, which is basically a mass media platform, they will only allow so much, to be revealed. It''s the same with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. All data-collecting platforms....collating comments. Sorting things, analysing and part of the Matrix of The Watchers, that watch us all. I've seen plenty of comments removed, myself.

I'm leaning towards the idea that the duo together was never in the area at all, and that the companion went there by himself after he did something to the elderly man. Facts said they didn't locate his scent in the pit he was digging and elsewhere, which can mean that the elderly man didnt dig that hole at all, but the companion did to lead the investigation away. I can't find a motive with that theory other than maybe robbery if his things happened to get taken from him. I'm a slight believer in the supernatural but the fact all these years and his body was never found struck as odd to me.

Sometimes the most obvious answer IS the answer. His friend did something to him. Maurice possibly found a real good/expensive rock and his mate wanted it? Perhaps they weren't even in that area (this is what I theorize) the friend sent the search crew on a hunt in the wrong place from the start. It's obvious the friend had something to do with it

Perhaps Mr Dametz found a large piece of topaz and his companion killed him for it. However the dogs would have found his scent. I don't really think that the companion did anything like this but I thought it was worth throwing this idea into the mix. Incidentally this happened on my 9th Birthday. I'm loving Top Mysteries. It's so thorough. Love from England.

Isn't it possible that he was never there to begin with? And that the "friend" did something to him beforehand? And then maybe he went to the woods and set up a narrative that they both came out and he went lost.
