Thank you so much. Your posting was my first time hearing the dhammapada years ago. I don't think the other translations would have made the same impact on me. Not to mention Needleman is perfect for this job imo. I tried uploading it myself a few years ago, with some different visuals, but it was removed after a few months. Thanks again

Jocob Needlemam, the most impressive narrator. Both the Tao Te Ching and the Dammapada with him are great.

If you realize the seed of Buddha nature in you, if you understand your mind as “the mind of a Christ,” if you vigorously practice compassion while ignoring your own physical senses & cultural constructs, if you experience your thoughts & heart’s desire before you as created “reality,” you need no yellow robe. You are “it.” You need only nothing.
@PunyMortal2 жыл бұрын
You can't ignore your senses. You can only accept what enters and realize that it's not worth clinging to, be it in a positive or negative way. I think that's the reason why the Buddha doesn't say anything of that kind. He says: guard your mind like a fortress, pay attention, see things for what they are and desire (the cause of pain and the result of ignorance) will not rise.

I commented 2 years ago. Two weeks ago I was struggling with the idea of “detached compassion” - detached from my own physical senses. This is rooted in the deep teaching of a self, others & stuff neither exist nor do not exist. Empty. Frankly, I was complaining that I was not being taught. That I was being ignored. I knew I was still attached to being me with all 5 senses. I went to sleep. I woke in the night to go to the bathroom. I noticed to my left, on the floor an enormous roach. I had a big icky reaction & grabbed the Raid. By this time the titanic roach was almost under my bed. I sprayed it as best I could. When I looked under the bed I saw, too, a large (quarter size) black spider stumbling over its own legs to get away from the chemicals. (Though Raid only kills insects & spiders are not insects.) I did not like it at all. I felt this roach & spider under MY bed repugnant. Next day I thought about these encounters. Finally, I understood, I was being taught - just what I wanted, what I yammered for. I was shown my distaste blocked my compassion. I saw how rooted I still am in the belief that I exist independently as do others. Buddha states we neither exist nor do exist. I saw how I rejected that truth. I existed & so did the roach & spider; and glorious I was offended by these “others” invading MY space. A few nights later, again, up to go pee, a giant roach crossed my path. I grabbed a nearby shoe & was about to smash it. But the teaching entered my mind. I put the shoe down & we both passed each other peacefully. Clearly this shows how ignorant I am still. (At 79 !!) It also shows how we can be taught & shown, if we sincerely ask, beg or yammer for teaching. I may post sometimes; it’s a desire to connect. It is not that I have anything to teach. Know this & it will help me know it too. Thank you.

All these teachings are relaying a message about incomprehensible things and concepts even the most brilliant cannot even begin to understand - except if one becomes a child ..No! .. actually an infant. The same with any teachings that transcend our intelligence. Nobody is going to get away with categorizing and explaining holy things and taking credit for it because no person can explain with their mouth or pen. Even if one understands, it is forbidden to share it. What wisdom teaches us is that our spirituality is only legitimate and truly seen through the things we do, especially in private..
