We hope you read more about Timur after you watch this video. There's so much more to learn. One of those things is easy: Timur is just one version of the name of the last great Mongol conqueror. His real name was "Tīmūr bin Taraghay Barlas," or "Timur, son of Taraghay of the Barlas Clan," but he is most often known in English as "Tamerlane," which is just a corruption of "Timurlenk," or "Timur the Lame." Timur actually was "lame" as people used to those with skeletal disabilities: he had a form of tuberculosis that infected the bones, which paralyzed his right leg and shoulder. In his younger years, he had been shot through the right hand with an arrow, losing two fingers, and limiting its use. Timur, in a word, was likely in constant pain throughout most of his life. Perhaps this affected his temper - because Timur's temper was bad. REALLY, REALLY BAD. But, unlike another supposedly disabled leader, the Viking “Ivar the Boneless”, Timur grew up to rule a gigantic empire, and killed millions, not hundreds or thousands. Ivar was an amateur compared to “Timur the Lame.”
Timur's ancestors were from a powerful Mongolian clan who had emigrated from Mongolia to the area that geographers still know as "Transoxania" - the "Land beyond the Oxus River." We know the area better as Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan. These were lands inhabited by Turkic peoples who the Mongols had subjugated under Genghis Khan and his sons in the 1200s. By the time of Timur (1336-1405), the Mongol Empire had fractured into several different kingdoms. The ruling Mongols assimilated to some degree with the native Turkic people and culture, creating a new culture called the "Turko-Mongolian."

There's an interesting legend about Temirkhan. It is said that he invited 3 very talented artists to make his portrait. One of them painted a real portrait that showed him as he was (one eye, limp leg), Khan got angry and ordered to have him executed for offense. So the second one has decided to draw unrealistic, very flattering portrait of him. He was also executed as a "liar". So, the third artist thought long and hard, and finally presented a portrait where the king was on one knee with an arrow aiming to shoot something with his one eye closed. Khan was pleased and rewarded that artist with great riches and let him go unharmed.

How would the third artist know what the second and first artists created? were they in the same room or did they see each other's art? Did Timur himself say what they created? Did they all get hired at once or one after the next? Were they made aware of each others failures? Lol fake folklore

Being married to a Russian-Uzbek woman, and having been to Uzbekoston thrice, this is an interesting video. Toshkent (the capital of Uzbekoston) is rife with statues of Timur, and several streets are named after him. Visiting Samarqand is an experience. Learning of the massacres done in the surroundings for the capture of the city. Seeing all the relics of this magnificent city and it's ties to the Silk Road. Timur's resting place in Samarqand, was specially interesting. I had never heard about the curse on his grave. Being very well versed in World War II, the moment the date of opening his gave (June 22nd 1941) was mentioned, I immediately said -Barbarossa-. Our guide did not know, that the German attack on the Soviet Union was named Untermehmen Barbarossa, and that I therefore recognized the date.

There is an Indian actor who named his son as Timur to honor his so called ancestors. I can only imagine the life of that child growing up. Edit: I don't understand why people are fighting over the name. Timur might be a great name but in some culture it would be seen negatively. With all the millions that he killed and the vastness of his empire, Timor did not survive the test of time. The Mongols as well as the territories where Timor was emir are today either backwards countries or countries of little values when it comes to intellectual or scientific pursuits. History was written and the future belongs to the europens. I guess poor Timor and his people missed out on the Renaissance. Which means that 17 million people Timor killed died for nothing. For Timor as a ruler had nothing to offer except violence and death.

Minor correction: Timur was not born in Uzbekistan. Uzbestikan didn't exist in 1336. Timur was born in the Chagatai Khanate, one of the successor states of the Mongol Empire, founded by Genghis Khan. The Chagatai Khanate was a Mongol khanate founded by the 2nd son of Genghis Khan and Borte, Chagatai. Timur was raised in a Turkicized tribe of Mongol origin, Barlas. His great grand father and Genghis great grand father were brothers

also worth pointing out up until recently the Mongol empire was called the Turko-Mongol empire because the Turks were dominant part of it forming 7 out of 8 soldiers in its armies, with the Turkic language being the empires official language. When the empire split into 4 parts 3 of them were directly ruled by Turkic dynasties.

@@Taimur.Shairyar Yep, I can understand. My Saudi friend told me "Converts are the first in line to prove their allegiance and faith to Islam, and it is hilarious." He was right in a way. Even today, Afghanistan and it's surrounding regions like Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Pakistan etc. are just wastelands governed by the immorally corrupt and the ones who rule with ignorant violence while using Islam as an excuse and a justification. As a ruler, he has nothing to show for his achievements except failures, excess of greed and death. What is funny is that all of his enemies are still alive and doing well. Hinduism as an ideology has done spectacularly well to survive in a world where most ideologies and religions change constantly due to animals like him who know nothing and give nothing new to the world. Who knows when there will be another great time of war and even this goes away.

Stalin had his grave opened, but why? why during the 2nd world war? They opened it despite warnings, believing to find a crystal or magic stone, which Timur allegedly took with him during his wars and is said to have had with him, an object that gave him invincibility. But they didn't find anything, instead they studied his remains and then put them back and sealed the tomb.

Timur Lenk better known as Tamerlane. He was a ruthless conqueror on the scale of Genghis Khan The Timurids defeated the Ottoman Turks at the battle of Ankara 1402 where he captured the sultan . Timur liked to make huge piles of severed heads . He built a mosgue in Herat , Afghanistan. The mongols usually adopted the religion of their subjects. Timur empire quickly broke up after he died. Great video 😎😁 I have books about the Mongols . I knew much about Timur . In my opinion the empire of Ghengis Khan lasted longer than Timur's empire.

In the kingdom of Timur and his descendants , the inhabitants of Moghulistan were referred to by the pejorative term jätä 3 " robbers " . The expression " the Jätä country " is often used by the historians as a synonym of Mo ghulistan . Bartol'd, V., 1962. Four studies on the history of Central Asia. Leiden: [s.n.], p.139. Timur was proud to call himself a Turk and hated the appellation “ Mongol ” even for his pre - Islamic ancestors . In fact , the Mongols who had migrated to newly occupied countries in the time of Chengiz Khan , integrated with the people of the Central Asian region , thus giving birth to a Turkish population . In Mongolia they retained their original characteristics . Nomadic feudalism was the pivot around which the Mongol social organization revolved . The history of Mongol feudalism is the history of their social institutions . Khan, Y., 1976. Two studies in early Mughal history. Simla: Indian Institute of Advanced Study, p.6. About this period, I asked my father to tell me the history of our family from the time of Yafet Aghlan, which he did, nearly in the following manner: " It is written in the Turkish history, that we are descended from Yafet Aghlan, commonly called (Abu al Atrak) Father of the Turks, son of (the Patriarch,) Japhet, he was the first monarch of the Turks: when his fifth son Aljeh Khan ascended the throne, the all gracious God bestowed on him twin sons, one of which was called Tatar, the other Moghul Timur. (2013). CHAPTER III. In C. Stewart (Trans.), The Mulfuzat Timury, or, Autobiographical Memoirs of the Moghul Emperor Timur: Written in the Jagtay Turky Language (Cambridge Library Collection - Perspectives from the Royal Asiatic Society, pp. 27-31). Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. doi:10.1017/CBO9781139507325.015 Tīmūr’s identity as a Turk was not lim- ited only to his understanding of himself, his skills, and his heritage. All the people that he encountered, whether in the marketplace or at the royal palace, immediately recognized him as a Türk-bacha , a Turk-boy, presumably for his attire and perhaps for his looks. Possibly, he represented to them an arche- typal nomad. Whatever the reason, they still found it the most convenient and intuitive manner to address him, not knowing his name. Sela, R. (2011). Youth. In The Legendary Biographies of Tamerlane: Islam and Heroic Apocrypha in Central Asia(Cambridge Studies in Islamic Civilization, pp. 76-91). Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.

His name was Mongol name Tumur ( iron, very common for males, even today), Russian speakers were misspelling his name and many other Mongol names as well.

@Vihtori doomfhuar nope not the mongol empire. He was trying to decimate china and its people so that he could repent for all the muslims that he killed during his many campaigns . his last days were tortorus. He couldn't sleep well. He had haunted dreams of the tortures he did to people. Timur like genghis was a hero to only his own people. But genghis was a principled man. Timur was a turk who knew only plunder, massa care and destruction

I would like to respond to the person who stated on his reply that the west were former slaves. That their position of power in the world is only a fluke. Well sir I like to say that the west is owner to the enlightment and the Renaissance. Without those two cultural movements the west would never have reached the status of prominence it shares today. It would be just countries stagnant in time as your country and civilization is. At one point in history all civilizations have been slaves. Sometimes the slaves were more civilized and came from a greater people and culture than the masters and conquerors.
