Excellent debate! By the way I think it is a pity that people feel that describing the racial realities of past times is reinforcing racism and sexism, when it is nothing but being real about what happened in those times.

A wonderful panel. I have read the book twice and learned many things I had not thought of.

What a wonderful panel. Ariel Dorfman makes the real meaning of the words that in the translation is accurate but not the exact meaning, and that is very powerful because it brings forth the real narrative. I hope there will be more of these interesting analysis and commentaries. May I suggest Albert Camus The Pest...

You just cannot hate Florentino. I know he is very disturbed but we all want to be lovers like him. He is so poetic, artistic, having that imagination and magic in his letters, persona, and ways how to present himself. I feel like Fermina is a little bit passive in love. She always do things that make her comfortable. She hasn't fought for that and ever expressed her emotions.

Fermina Daza is a clear representation of Colombian women from the north cost of the country in those times. To fully understand the book, it would be necessary to know Colombian culture.

I assure you I can and do feel tremendous disgust towards Florentino

There’s 1 line of dialogue in the whole book that might show Fermina actually having loved Florentino. The rest is her being universally emotionally unavailable

Even though l didn’t like the book and Gabo is definitely not my writer, the girl in this video is absolutely annoying with her abhorrent and out of context criticism
