I read his diary in college. He started his diary young like at age 16 or so. He was involved in Trinity Church where many luminaries worshiped.

He was also a composer, and a damn good one. Yes, America was finding its own musical voice with composers such as Stephen Foster, Edward MacDowell, Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Edmund Dede and William Henry Fry. Scott Joplin, George W Chadwick, Amy Beach and Arthur Foote would leave their mark in the latter 19th Century.

@@Manupajournalism yes, he studied with Franz Liszt in Weimar with Edward MacDowell, Albert Morris Bagby and others americans pianists! I'm come from Belgium, but I like american's piano music!!!
