Hi Harvey, Yes as a US citizen your work is protected under US copyright. If you plan to stay in Taiwan permanently, you may look into their ISBN options to see if it would cost less. If it is unavailable or prohibitive then go with the US option.

Thank you for addressing these topics. There is so much conflicting information online. Especially in regard to ebooks. Some say no ISBN is needed because it is sold online. Others including Bowker seem to show that you need an ISBN for any format difference.

In my opinion, yes eBooks need ISBNs. Amazon KDP specifically says that "kindle books do not need ISBNs" but that is because they assign their ASIN. I always advocate for owning your ISBN so it can go anywhere. And to answer your other question, yes technically all different formats need their own ISBN. I did get an email from Amazon last week that they are moving to ePub so that is very good news :) Best of luck on your journey!

So far, of many, your video is the best I have seen. I am self-publishing with KDP. I have my ISBN in the shopping cart at Bowker. They are offering me a bar code. Should I go ahead and get it or wait for the KDP barcode? At this point, I only plan to sell online. What remains are questions concerning pricing of my print book, relative to royalty comparisons between Kindle and IngramSpark (there will be paperback and hardcover versions, but let's focus on paperback). If the 400-page book is priced at $18.95, which is above comparable books of about the same page count, the KDP royalty is decent. However, the same list price results in a paltry royalty with IS when the wholesale discount is 55%. There's the option of pricing the book at $19.95, but even then, the IS royalty is relatively weak. I'm on the fence about listing at $19.95-I recognize the risk of losing some sales, yet I see the target market as being insensitive to price. That said, I don't want to come across as gouging. Another option is to lower the IS wholesale discount a bit, to, say, 53%. So, the questions are: 1) Would a slight reduction of the wholesale discount be detrimental to future retail store placement, and, 2) What is your advice regarding pricing?

If you think the algorithm is starting to work against you after lowering the wholesale discount you can increase it again. Every book/author has a unique experience and audience so it is hard to give blanket advice that will work for everyone.

One question: If the bar code contains the price embedded within the actual code, as you seem to suggest, what happens when the book price changes as it often will? Yes, when you the author (or a publisher) permanently change the retail price it needs a new barcode if the fixed price is on the barcode. Sales which are limited time offers don't require a barcode change.

Very helpful. I'm planning on publishing my book through KDP. Based on your video I plan to get my own ISBN (not through KDP), I guess I'll get an LCCN (why not), I will copyright my work, don't think I need my own barcode since KDP puts them on when printing the books. I guess I need to get all of these before I have KDP even publish a proof copy for me since these numbers need to be in the book content. Is that correct? ISBN you need before it goes to print. Lccn you could get later but I recommend getting both before upload. Both of those numbers need to go on the copyright page in the book. The copyright registration you can do after the book is published. Best of luck!

A UPC code usually refers to the numbers at the bottom of a barcode. For books the most important identifying number on an ISBN13 Barcode is the ISBN not the UPC number

I wish I had watched your video before "publishing" my book on lulu. I submitted a copyright registration and two copies of my book to the LOC Copyright office and stated that it was already published, not really having any idea what a LCCN is. Now I guess it's too late to get one.

No, the LCCN and copyright registration can be done after uploading. However once you have the LCCN you'll want to add it to the copyright page so you'd have to upload the new version at some point

Hi Thomas, barcodes are only needed for physical products so in this case your print books (or if you did cds of your audiobook). Unless you are going to pursue a brick and mortar strategy for your book you don't have to purchase a barcode with the price, you can use a no price barcode that the platforms provide

Okay several questions about copywriting and price. I was looking on the official website. It says that if you do an electronic application its $45 and a standard is $65. Is there any reason you wouldn't do an electronic application? Next question, what if you're writing a series. Can you copywrite the series of books under one copywrite or do you need a separate copywrite for each book?

You would need one copyright registration per book if you wanted the entire series to be registered. I would consult an IP attorney for a recommended between the $45 and $65 option

Hey has anyone tried publishing their hardback book on amazon kdp and using an isbn for the hardback. But then for the paperback, not using an isbn, and linking it to the hardback? You think that would work? Because if you don't use an isbn, amazon does not let you show inside your book. So I'm wondering if I could do this as a way to save on an isbn.

Hello, I don't see why that wouldn't work. However, I think I would question what your strategy is with your ISBNs. The reason to own your ISBN when you bring it to Amazon is for your to retain full control if you ever want or need to move the content to a second platform. If you plan to self publish the print books on multiple platforms you have to own the ISBN. If you are sticking with Amazon only and don't ever intend to publish it wide then you don't need to purchase either ISBN. I see ISBN ownership as an all or nothing. In the US Bowker offers a discount on a bundle of ISBNs so if you need 3 or more you save by getting the bundle

A few things: 1. Yes, you can use Bowker's service to file the copyirght reg but I believe there is a markup so you save money doing it yourself and maybe save time going via Bowker. 2. Yes, regardless of whether you supply your own ISBN or you use the "free" one, any service will apply it to the back/barcode. If you bring your own barcode the ISBN will already be on it.

I'm going to be writing Vacation Bible School (VBS) kits and Sunday school curriculum, and I'm not sure if I need to set ISBNs for them or not. The VBS is basically a "kit" of books ex: directors' guide, skit book, craft book, game book, etc. These are just letter-sized, paperback "guidebooks" for running a VBS. I've seen companies that sell them put ISBNs on them, but I didn't know if that was required or recommended. I have the same question about Sunday school curriculum. The difference is that there is only one "book" at a time, and they are released quarterly. I haven't seen any examples of ISBNs on that type of thing. Also, I don't even know if this would be considered a literary work or something else. Would you be able to advise on this? Thank you!

How many ISBN's do you need for ebook since there are format differences. Amazon Kindle uses mobi format and most others use epub format. If the original work is published in epub format then you upload the epub to Kindle who then in turn makes it available as a mobi. Do you need a separate ISBN for each?

I’ve noticed that several books have a page with copyright information on it. Where did they get that lingo from. I’ve called the US copyright office and was told there’s no template for those words. I ask b/c I want similar info in my book to let the public know it’s copyrighted.

No. Barcodes are only for physical products. Ebooks do not need barcodes. They do however, need ISBNs.

I'm selling a planner on amazon kdp. It gets updated every year as a new book because the calendar changes. I have a unique planner in a niche that I don't see anyone else selling. Should I copyright a planner? In this case I'm thinking I should. Does 1 copyright work for all years for the planner or do I have to get a new one every year?

Hi Abdulla, So I know what the cost for these things are and the process to acquire them for U.S. citizens and residents. I would suggest doing some research for your current country of residence/citizenship as they may have very different processes and fees. (ex. In the US we have to pay for ISBNs, but in some countries there is no cost for citizens like in Canada.) Best of luck!

I've been watching a video solely on ISBNs, and it works differently in Canada -- my Cdn ISBNs are from the gov't, and you send in a book, like you do with the Library of Congress here. I used my Cdn ISBNs with Ingramspark and Amazon so I guess I've answered my own question, now that I've thought it through. ISBNs are international, too, so the US Copyright Office and LCCNs should not be a problem.

Yes, ebooks need unique isbn numbers that are distinct from the paperback. The copyright registration covers the entire work in all formats. Both formats should have a copyright page with the isbn number listed. You can make one for each format or do I e copyright page that lists both isbns

Yes, you'll have to market to them. You can submit your book as a purchase request or let your local hometown library know. Usually you'll market to your readers that they can ask the library to purchase the book

Hi Brett, Happy to help! For each format of the book you need an ISBN, but only the print versions need a barcode since the eBook or audiobook won't pass over a scanner. So in an example, a book that has an eBook, Audiobook, paperback, and hardcover format needs 4 ISBNs. However, it only needs 2 barcodes (one for the paperback and one for the hardcover). Also that package from Bowker doesn't save you anything, you can purchase the barcodes separate from the ISBNs and it is the same as I'd you bought them all at once. The real savings is when you get the 10 pack of ISBNs instead of one at a time.
