Barnes and Noble is my current goal right now. The only difference is that instead of a book, I have a product that would fit in on their shelves. Looking for advice. I uploaded my book through Barnes and Nobles Press. So far not a great experience. Uploaded book on April 2, 2024. Today is May 2, 2024. My account is still pending. The site says it takes 15 days, that is obviously and error. I have reached out to the company several times and I was lucky to get one response claiming they were delayed, but could not find my manuscript. I promptly replied with photos to prove the file was uploaded, and I have heard nothing since. I attempted to contact them again, and no response. I have no idea what the problem is or if I need to do anything from my end. Frustrated. This is my first attempt to self publish with Barnes and Nobles Press. Not sure what to do at this point. Has anyone else struggled with this? Thank you Charron

One day this would be a great dream! I like that you kept it real by saying you need to have a large enough following especially in your area. I moved to my city right before covid hit and on top of that I am extremely introverted so I don't know but a few people. I would bring no value to my local store. Do you have some strategies for how someone can start building a local community? (Especially in Covid times when people don't really want to get together.) I know this seems like something that should be intuitive but for someone like me it is not. But I'm really great at taking direction. Thank you for the video!

HI S.D., I would say that building your community should fit who you are. There are likely other introverted authors in the area who might want to connect online for the most part, but then might be there to show up at an in-store event. Check out if any local stores are doing author readings and check it out. Hopefully, an extrovert approaches you and can get a convo (and friendship) started. Best od luck!!

Barnes and Noble orders through a network, like Ingram, to source and purchase books, handle returns. Since you are the printer and distributor you could offer to see direct or on consignment but it is out of their usual process. I usually do not recommend selling via Amazon FBA or Seller Central

I self-published my book with Bookbaby and am doing well on Amazon. BUT suddenly cannot get into Barnes and Noble as apparently Bookbaby has ingram but not ingramsparks. About 5 local Barnes and Noble stores in Los Angeles have told me they tried to get the book for the store but it's not available on IngramSparks. My question is this: If I go to ingramsparks and sign up for publish distribution, can I still stay with Bookbaby as well? AND how do I get my book to be the same as it was? I'm asked to upload the manuscript but they ask all the info about book size, paper quality, etc etc. We printed in 16font and used helvetica. Can't they just get that from Bookbaby or do I have to start from scratch?
@1MKWilliams
@1MKWilliams 8 ай бұрын
I would check a few things: 1. Do you own the ISBN/have the ability to take the book somewhere else under the Bookbaby contract? 2. IngramSpark distributes through the Ingram network, which it sounds like Bookbaby distributes through as well. So you may be better off, IF you can move, making the change to B&N Press which is direct with Barnes & Noble. Best of luck!

Congratulations on your strong sales!! A few thoughts regarding B&N: If you are with B&N press it seems ridiculous that they can't carry the books. You could also list through IngramSpark where you have the option to set as returnable. They distribute to B&N but you run the risk of a duplicate listing. Since the current B&N listing isn't doing well you may not lose much to remove them and start a new via IS. 2. For book store events you can work with local independent bookstores (or other chains) and sell on consignment instead. It's less risk for them but if the books sell everyone wins. Best of luck!

That's a bummer, there seems to have been a shift in their policy in the last month where the individual stores have more say over what they want to carry or not. @@1MKWilliams In other cases, Ingram has just destroyed the Returns and charged the Author anyway. There's got to be a solution, like "Conditional Returns" if the books aren't selling or arrive damaged. Bookstore Order Entry Errors shouldn't be one of those "Approved Conditions" at Ingram. Yet ANOTHER way to get your books into B&N is to turn your Book into a Screenplay and have Hollywood make it a movie. This is what I'm attempting with my upcoming book. Titles in my Genre (Genealogy, History) don't sell a lot of product unless its about a Zeitgeist Celeb or Pro Athlete. I might pitch mine to Mel Gibson. He likes Historical Fiction.

I am looking to literally upload my paperback book for sale to the public and need the book to be automatically connected to an online print on demand service that B&N automatically uses to print and ship to customer eg. This is all a first for me! I tried to reach out to their Customer service but found they didn't directly answer my question and was left even more confused. I live in Australia, so sending physical copies wouldn't be feasible at all for me, so I would absolutely need B&N to have a print on demand service directly linked for my online sales. It's the nature of retail business everywhere right now. Online retailers like Amazon have unlimited inventory and sell books at a loss because they know people will buy other higher margin items on the website. Brick and mortar stores can only put their prices so low and eventually if enough people buy online, they lose the business.

My original publisher did a license deal with B&N for an economy hardcover; same book as the trade paperback only a HC at a cheaper price! Fine: the B&N brand economy HC SOLD OUT. COMPLETELY. Fine; but here's the rub: if you do a print run and the book sells out, wouldn't you immediately reprint it and sell a bunch more? I would. But B&N, in its infinite (lack) of wisdom, did not. This was not SP and I had no control over B&N's business decision in this regard. But it just seemed weird to me that you would limit the profits from a money-making book! So as Amazon wipes the floor with B&N, don't cry too much, since they have idiots in their marketing & sales publishing departments losing them money on books that sell.

Since no literary agent wants anything that I make, I'm forced to go into self-publishing, and even that isn't viable since I don't have the cash nor social presence.

Hi Bee, Querying can be so difficult. It is a stream of rejections until the right query hits. My message to authors is that if traditional publishing is your true goal, to keep on that path. Otherwise you will sabotage yourself with self-publishing. Two really great channels for authors looking to query are @BookEndsLiteraryAgency and @AlyssaMatesic . I think the responses you're getting are perhaps a chance to revise your query. Some agents may be closed to queries right now, may have clients they are already committed to. At times it seems you need the talent but also luck and good timing. In terms of social presence, regardless of your publishing path you do need an audience. But we all start at 0 followers. Pick any big name author, they all started with no followers. It's finding the channel you are the most comfortable with and showing up there. Pick one and start posting. Post about how you are trying to query. Post about what you are writing now. Show up and you'll find a very welcoming author community. Best of luck and don't give up on your dream. M.K.

@@1MKWilliams I mean, the first book I dumped (it was awful. Not ready for that genre yet) had 15 rejections. The second is at 54 and yet its first draft test run on a website saw it reach second place on the front page for two weeks where only romance novels are, and the third is at 51 after three months. I have a fanbase. I've revised both stories and taken feedback both from my followers, readers that simply like my work, and neutral parties. I've already queried bookends. I've already written about 120 novels since 2010 to train myself (could've been more but I lost interest). Nothing more can be done.

I give up. A new author especially would not have many followers yet. It seems like the word, Indie Author is a distasteful word and is segregated from those who do have a publishing company behind them. I understand, just going off info I received from B&N when it was explained to me. I suppose it is easier to just allow a publisher to do the work. So, my question is...which publishers are trustworthy and are not charging a fortune. However, I am grateful at least it is on Amazon and other platforms.

It seems B&N has recently changed their policies to allow individual stores decide whether or not to stock indie author books. If a store has been burned by a bad experience or lots of returns it can have a negative impact on future indie authors. That said, there is no credible publisher who will charge an author to publish their book. If you go the traditional route, the publisher pays an advance against royalties. If you self-publish the author fronts everything (and can hire a project manager to help with the details), but the author is the publisher.
