Ok so... major and minor are the same but minor is played starting at the 6th note of the scale instead of the 1st. a major chord is the 1st 3rd and 5th notes of a scale played at the same time. a minor chord is the 1st and 5th notes of the scale played at the same time and the 3rd note string is left open...??????
@seandaniel235 жыл бұрын
Soo close! A minor chord is the 1st, 3rd and 5th notes IF you start on the 6th note of the scale and think of that as the 1. OR The 1st and 5th notes of a scale with a 'flat' 3rd.

Finally...after centuries of waiting....This critical principle explained coherently without making it unnecessarily complex to scare away people. Best of all, besides the drummer jest, was the fact your first example of WWHWWWH starts with something besides damn C major. It does NOT simplify the process to always introduce this idea in a scale with no sharps ...it only confuses people later on and adds another layer of confusion and intimidation when that mysterious notion of the sharp or flat comes in. Get used to it people immediately! Something exists besides a natural half-step!.....At least that's my experience when I first got curious, at a very late age, about scales and "what is the theoretical basis of a minor or 13th or diminished" etc....and then when I actually had a few of my own students...I really tried to simplify it and found everyone expected a guitar was like a (contemporary?) player piano with some kind of built in chip that would play the song if you brought your hand in a horse-hoof shape near the neck and put some sort of grimace on your face.....and by contorting your face more, in all too genuine pain and confusion because the dreaded notion of WORK was now entering the mystic equation........more complex ideas would automatically magically play themselves....Big Thanks!

If A# is the same as Bb, why do you use flats in minors and sharps in majors? Is it because of the relative positions of A#/Bb? (For eg, A# when we move up from A and Bb when we move down from B)

flats and sharps are totally separate from majors and minors. It just depends on their position relative to the intervals of the scale used.

So super quick question Sean. If I apply the pattern WHWWHWW to a C major scale in the key of C (CDEFGABC) than I have a C minor scale right ? So did you just made the example of Am since they share some notes ? Thanks for your videos man you really helping me learn some theory finally ! Hope ya get to 1M soon! :D @zepvalue
@seandaniel238 жыл бұрын
Yup exactly man. I think one way I'd like you to think differently about it is that you're not applying 'WHWWHWW' to a C major scale, you're just starting that sequence off on a C note, thus giving you the C minor scale. The reason I picked A minor to go with C major is that every major scale has a minor scale that matches up with it. So like the major scale is WWHWWWH, now if you started reading those letters on the 6th note (the last W in that string of letters) you'd get WHWWHWW, which is the minor scale. So the minor scale is really just the major scale staring on the 6th note, and the 6th note in C major, is A, so A minor. Hopefully that helps my man!

For sure. A scale is just a group of notes that sound good together. You can play them one at a time and maybe make a solo out of scale, or you can combine those notes in different ways to make chords. (like the C major chord can be built from the C major scale). Hope that helps!

I have some questions. How do you count whole step and half step up and down the neck? I dont mean horizontally , I mean vertically , from string to string?And also , if you're doing the Major C scale ,like you do in the video ,how do you form a chord out of that? You're showing us scales on the middle of the neck but then you go to form the basic E major chord at the second fret,I am a bit confused
@seandaniel237 жыл бұрын
+Cristi iSon From string to string (for the lowest 4 strings anyway) going a whole step higher is the same as going a string higher and back 3 frets. So a whole step higher than the 5th fret low e string is either the 7th fret of the same string or the 2nd fret of the a string. Building a chord out of a scale shape is all about learning arpeggios and then translating them into chord voicings. Definitely check out some of the arpeggio vids.

Since minor scales have the same notes as their relative majors but start on the 6th of the major, by stacking the notes in 3rds at every step, the order of minor chords is Maj, dim, Maj, min, min, Maj, Maj.
