One interesting fact about Queens is that it has a thriving black middle class. From the mid 90s well into the 2000s black median income surpassed white incomes. @Jim Allen I so agree. My daughter and I would hop on the LIRR and take in as much as we could. We would have so much fun on each trip finding hidden gems and historical areas. No trip was ever the same. I always felt, there are people that spend a lot of money to visit New York, that I felt it was a crime to not take advantage of staycations right in our own backyard that has so much to offer.

Luv NYC, everything about it. The good, bad, gritty, energy, everything. Brooklyn has a style of their own, I luv it. They’ve always set trends. All my female friends from Brooklyn use to wear hair styles and clothes that were so ahead of the rest of the countries time. And side note, Opal was killing it in those heels in the snow.

It remind's of somewhere down south, with actual New Yorker's inhabiting these neighborhood's. The best Italian food anywhere in NYC, IMO also. Next to "Little Italy" in the Bronx.

One thing to note about Queens is that there is a vast difference between Eastern and Western Queens. I grew up in Astoria which is literally 10 minutes to the East Side and Midtown Manhattan whereas eastern Queens, bordering on Nassau county, Long Island, can almost be considered suburban.

fun fact ab queens: we're the only borough where most ppl line up neatly for the bus as a queens native, flushing is by far the BEST neighborhood to grow up in as an east asian person, especially Chinese or Koreans. And you can find a town and say that for almost any ethnicity over here tbh. there's a decently big tibetan population in elmhurst, lots of bangladeshi people in jackson heights, polish people in maspeth(although the main polish neighborhood is in Brooklyn), as well as mannnnnnnnyyyyyy others. Houses are very pricey obviously esp since demand is going up but if you can afford one here many are pretty nice. anyways, back to growing up in flushing; Love having grown up surrounded by my culture, language, etc. even at a majority white high school (which is rare in queens, but does exist actually) where microagressions were pretty frequent, i never felt out of touch with my culture because i'd come home to it every day. and not just in my house. downtown is admittedly not the cleanest (not as dirty as Brooklyn tho) but most people don't really live on main street anyways. And the 7 train is arguably the best subway line as its mostly above ground and is the best method to travel to work in Manhattan from here. According to most Chinese immigrants here, or even just visitors, flushing is probably one of the closest you can get to china without being in china. I'm so grateful for my town fr.

I've been doing Shopping at night, fishing at night, been in Coney Island at night ( Brooklyn Cyclones), Dyker Heights ( Christmas time) . Since I'm a fan of Trains. I have taken the Subway home at night. As for Manhattan I'm a Big Rangers fan.

My wife grew up in the Bronx, in a little Italian neighborhood. On her old street, "New York" seems miles and miles away. Born in Queens and spent 22 years in the Bronx and most of the rest in Manhattan and I can say with confidence that Little Italy in the Bronx(Belmont) is mostly Albanian and the Bronx is primarily Black and Hispanic(mostly Puerto Rican and Dominican). Also, the Bronx still has a lot of rough neighborhoods. My ex still lives off Findlay Ave which is a nightmare and my boy grew up in RPT. Don’t get me started with Morrisania or the South Bronx. Plus your theory on skyscrapers in Manhattan has been disproved. It had/has to do with economics. In fact, lower Manhattan had a both a sand problem and deep bedrock. The geology reason has been repeated so often that people believe it. That said, good video.

This is Brooklyn from a Caucasian pov. I grew up in Brooklyn. Brooklyn was once a city onto itself. It was it's own municipality before it was a borough and part of "NYC". So the pride comes from having its own sense of identity apart fr Manhattan. Many of us say ppl on Manhattan are not really NYers. They're converts. Brooklyn has the biggest Caribbean scene and the food is fantastic. Ever have a Roti? Also the Jewish and Middle Eastern populations are responsible for great falafel and hot bagels in the morning. There is diversity in the neighborhoods in Brooklyn, which range from her gentrified hipster vibe, to the single family homes in Canarsie. Sadly, they're gentrifying all of Bklyn, so much of that homegrown culture is being bought out by rich white ppl who couldn't afford Manhattan. Thus the idea from her that Bklyn is #2. But, it never was. Us and Queens were the best kept secret at one time b/c new comers thought Brooklyn was all ghetto and we preferred it that way. In Bklyn I went to bar mitzvahs, Italian weddings, I'm West Indian, and went to school with Muslims, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Panamanians Haitians, Jews, Asians and Africans! Have you ever attended a real Quinciera? Nope? So, take my word for it, the blending of cultures is not uncommon. My daughter learned some Russian fr her friend's grandmother. We have Jamaican-Chinese, Black Cubans, White West Indians, Black Jews , I could go on and on. Do you even know what a Cuchifrito is?? A real Bodega? That's the real Brooklyn. We have amazing libraries, our own botanical garden, prospect park/with a huge lake, and a zoo. My high school was across from the botanical garden. I learned to play tennis, fish, ride horses and ice skate in Prospect Park. We also have an HBCU in Medgar Evers College, one of the few in the North. My sister still lives in a middle class residential area of single family, private homes, untouched by the hipsters so far. We always called Bklyn, "the planet of Bklyn" b/c we do our own thing. We take pride in that. We used to defend that which made us tough. We might fight each other, but nobody attacks Brooklyn. Then we band together. We have personal, tight knit communities, and neighborhoods where ppl have known each other for years. Now greed is destroying that. They are trying to turn libraries into condos for rich, white converts. My community has been fighting against it as many are historic and have been around for generations. Bklyn has the largest black population in the city. So the history of those brownstones is rich. Many of them were mansions back in the day. Many were owned by Blk ppl. Again, those neighborhoods, like Bedstuy, have been gentrified, and those communities are no longer middle class black ppl. It sucks. We're being priced out of our communities by ppl who, a decade ago, wouldn't even venture into Bklyn. Or thought living in Bklyn vs Manhattan was a loss. Since this is the case, many poor pple are now concentrated in poor areas, thus crime, thus over-policing. But, Bklyn will always be my and my family's home no matter where I go. We're never selling our homes to the hipsters. She missed all of the great facts ab Brooklyn. All her facts are ab white ppl (as usual). But NY is richer than that. Venture out to the real holes in the wall, authentic communities where real Brooklynites live. Real natives. You might gain a better understanding of the city. Rant over.
@DAVIDTORRESANI3 жыл бұрын
I back this 100% Yes, I'm seeing through different eyes but everything you spoke on, Is 100% honest. I wish my Dad kept his brown stone. He sold out sooooooooo cheap and we left to Boston. This guy uses it as a BnB now. But I thinkBrooklyn was the Jewel in New York that was only appreciated when we lost a huge part.
@darkwoodmovies2 жыл бұрын
Gentrification isn't unique to Brooklyn. It happened in Manhattan too, just earlier. It happened in every city in the USA. It's almost like the rich keep getting more and the poor and middle class are struggling to keep up. What a concept!

I was in shocked to see many changes during the years, like Jewel Ave in Flushing which was mostly Jewish Orthodox, now being mostly Vietnam. You forgot to mention the chocolate egg cream's home was Brooklyn. In 1975 I remember sharing a two-bed room basement apartment in Chelsea with 3 other college students. It was a good neighborhood. Our apartment was $450 a month, split among 4 people, we each paid $112 a month. Back then going to a NYS college FT was $365 a semester. City colleges were less. Times have changed.
