Pro-tip on subways. There are usually four entrances to each station at an intersection. The trains travel on the right side of the tracks like cars do. Therefore if you are going downtown, enter from the two stations on the west side of the street. Going uptown, enter either of the two on the east side. Some stations you can enter all four, but most you must figure out which two to enter or you might waste your ticket swipe.

Last year in september I visited NYC and watched your video's months in advance. I can say...best thing I ever did. I followed your advice and got to feel like a real New Yorker. Visited Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island and Queens. Used the subway without problems and got to visit all the placed you recommended. I even had a citytrip to Washington DC and did a NYPD ride along. I do feel most 'secret' spots are well known now. But still, I feel like I made the most of my time and saw almost everything I really had to see in 10 days. I had a fantastic airbnb with Phill in East village to for only 65€/day. So thank you so much !

My bi-coastal hairdresser (I'm in CA) told me the deal about not wearing running shoes the first time I went to NY many years ago. My podiatrist says running shoes make the very best walking shoes. I have worn my Asics all over NY (when it wasn't snowing) and no one has given me any grief about it...as far as I know. If they are secretly thinking "tourist", who cares? I am one! I completely agree with everything else you said. I just hope the cab and horse carriage drivers don't see this... lol Thank you for this informative video. I hope it brings you lots of well behaved, tour going, big tipping tourists.

The first piece of advice I give to anyone who is about to take their first trip to New York is ...... DON'T eat in a restaurant for every meal. It took my wife and I a few days to realise just how much we were spending by doing so. We then started using the Essen deli's where you pay for food by the weight (around $8 per pound when we were there in 2016). There are plenty of cheaper food options in New York aside from expensive restaurants, you'll save a fortune.

Fruit carts and aldi have dirt cheap, good NYC food. Dinners are typically much more expensive than lunches. Whole Foods sale products are also well priced, for those trying to save. I walk a Manhatten figure 8 ( miles) usually on my 6th day that includes all 3.

I'm likely to ruffle a few feathers but... After visiting the USA from New Zealand, tipping in itself, is ridiculous. Why should the customer subsidise staff wages through bumping up their wages?
@mrbushlied7742
@mrbushlied7742 4 жыл бұрын
"When in Rome..." The wait staff in NZ are probably paid a living wage, not so in the USA. I've never been to NZ, except for two airport layovers in Auckland on my way to OZ. Australia also does not have a tipping culture. However, as an American (actually US/UK dual national), I felt ashamed not to leave a tip. So, I can understand why you wouldn't want to leave one as it's NZ custom. Still it is not socially acceptable in the USA unless you are unhappy with the service. Under no circumstances are you obligated to leave a tip in the USA if you are unhappy with the service. You can even have the service charge removed from your bill, if you are not satisfied with the service.
@CDN_Store
@CDN_Store 4 жыл бұрын
The campaign to pay living wage here in London has really gained traction. I think as an employer you shouldn't be employing people if you can't or won't pay them a wage they can manage to survive on. The culture of making the customer feel guilty is wrong, it should be a choice if you feel the person serving you has gone above and beyond then this is the point of a tip. Londoners also have this image of being rude too. I think that's just the stereotypical viewpoint of people from the North. I guess as they said it's a city thing of being fast paced and usually commuters.

Do you not realize that, if the waitstaff were not tipped, the prices you pay for food would be commensurately higher? At least, with tipping, the waitstaff is motivated to provide the very best service possible.

I’m a native New Yorker. Air b n b’s I have mixed feelings about. They often take away affordable housing from locals when landlords hold an apt solely for this. And frankly, people on vacations are incredibly noisy. No respect for the actual tenants when they are staying in apt building. So perhaps reminding people of that if you recommend Air B&Bs. I also recommend Top of the Rock instead of ESB. Also, instead of waiting on line for ferry to Liberty Island, take the free Staten Island Ferry and you pass right by the Statue of Liberty.. plus the photos you can take from the back of the ferry are amazing! Museums rely on tourists paying and we need to support art institutions so perhaps let people figure out about the free days on their own. Plus the lines are already really long to get in on those days. Otherwise good job.

Your videos are THE BEST!! I watched all of the NY ones before our group of 9 went for a week in September for the first time. We would not have survived or had the trip we did without the knowledge you have shared. We saw and did just about everything in Manhattan within that week! I spent all week ushering our group out of the way on the sidewalk 😆 they would all stop in the middle constantly. I think they all finally caught on by our last day 🤦🏻‍♀️ comfy shoes and external chargers were absolute musts. We did enjoy the bus tour at the beginning of our week, it gave us a better visual of where stuff was and we loved hearing about history. Also we had plenty of time to do both the Empire State Building and Top of the Rock. I really wanted to see the Empire State Building bc they had the Friends orange couch up there one day 🧡

Regarding clothes: I live in So California. I go to NYC a few times a year for work and I find New Yorker's are really practical with their clothes day to day. By practical, I don't mean frumpy. It's a stylish "I am going to walk 5 miles today" look. It's a nice change from LA fashion, which isn't as focused on comfort/practical.

Nicely put together advice you two! And it only confirms what I already knew...I have visited enough times to have moved well past the touristy things and the city now feels like my second home, can navigate it with ease, has my heart, and I plan to make it official in the next year to two at most:) When I visit, I am pretty sure I blend in and most don't realize I am a visitor;) I have traveled solo on more than one occasion. Every single tip presented here was spot on and I was smiling or nodding in agreement!! The only one I hadn't heard about was "sit and squat", too funny. And I don't take cabs so wouldn't know about tipping rates. I don't understand how people can visit anywhere and only eat in chain restaurants, especially ones they have at home. And especially in the City! Really?! I have a hard time deciding what to eat because there are only so many meals during my stay! Last time some of my choices included Nepalese, Ethiopian, Jamaican, and an always go-to, Jewish deli. Try new foods!! Stay in an Airbnb, get away from Midtown and Times Square and even Manhattan, explore beyond the tourist spots, find other parks besides Central Park, speak to locals, and you will have a more authentic New York experience. Of course if it's your first trip, you will want to see all of the iconic and tourist places, and you should and that is OK!! But I concur, if you only go to the top of one building, choose Top of the Rock! You can visit the Empire State building's beautiful gold lobby and photograph it from the ground;) One random piece of knowledge from me: corner stores are called "bodegas", similar to a convenience store or market in other places;) Happy exploring everyone!

I wouldn't say I fell for number 9, being I was only in NYC for the day, so I felt a bus would get me around faster to see the sights. It was vague though; but that was okay because it's NEW YORK CITY! And I already knew I would be coming back for a longer stay. And Luis you would be proud. I did make a conscience choice every time to step aside against a building and out of the way when needing to stop where I was. You were talking about it and I just kept nodding my head.

It's wonderful that this video is being shot at the V&A Waterfront in the South Africa my home country. The tip standard in South Africa is 10%, it's good to know that around the world it varies as more than 10% in my country is for going above and beyond, or the bill is too low for the work the individual put into serving your table.

Winter weather: hat and gloves. Broadway shows are expensive: try Off or Off Off Broadway. It’s the subway, even on elevated sections.

Thank you Sarah for your videos. I´m from Sweden and I´ve been in New York once before., in 1973 when I was a teenager. But.......I´m going to New York in April and your videos have helped me a lot. I think there are a few Swedish cafés in New York, called Fika. (Fika means coffee break) Have you been to one of them? Maybe you should go an eat some Princess cake.

Love your videos! Will be visiting NYC for the first time next month 🎉🎉so finding your videos very helpful. I’m from the UK. One thing that has confused me though is sneakers vs runnings shoes? In the UK we would not differentiate between the two (I have no idea what the difference is!) we call them all “trainers” (which I’m guessing means something else in USA - 😂)

The V&A waterfront in South Africa is an active harbour and the spot that you are recording this video at is next to an active dry dock. Wonderful to see you guys in South Africa.

Sarah. The yellow cabs can be a Severe issue. Since I live in Brooklyn. The Yellow cabs ( Some of them) don't like going to Brooklyn ( Gravesend , Coney Island area) The last time I flown was in 1999. Going home from San Francisco took the redeye to JFK. Me and my brother took a yellow cab and he was a cool guy. We gave him a tip and helped him find a Bagel store in Gravesend section of Brooklyn. ( Ave X and East 1st street).

Hi Sarah, I'm a huge fan of your channel! I would like to know some recommendations (like discounts or things to do) with seniors. A lot of us are traveling with our fathers or grandma's and I know for example that you can get a discount for them for the subway... thanks a lot!

If you plan to spend a week or more in NYC, always plan your trip with an easily obtained travel book by authors such as Frommer or Fodor.

Arthur Avenue in the Bronx may be the new Little Italy. However, it's off the beaten path and takes too long to get to for tourists staying in Manhattan on a tight schedule.

Thanks you for this vid Sarah! Just to add: to charge your devices, you may also use the LinkNYC portals all around NYC 😊 i used them a lot when i was there. You just need to have your USB cable with you and be ready to stand for some time beside the portal if your battery went really low 😋

wnna save a few dollars from top of the rock, go to bar 65, its literally one less floor, lovely outdoor patio, and for 15 dollars you can have a nice cocktail and go outside rather than the $40 to go up that extra floor. Just make sure you check the dress code before and you can turn it into a romantic evening.

You guys are so cute, I love your videos! Going to NY for the 3rd time because my mans mom lives in Kingston. Your vids are so helpful and entertaining. I wish the hotel tip aged well though, hotels and airbnbs are both outrageous now :( we luckily found an airbnb for about $300 per night this trip! in Brooklyn! :)

One thing I learned was to head to the avenue going in the direction you want to go when catching a taxi to prevent doing an extra block. Any other tips for giving taxi drivers directions so you don’t get duped?

Thanks to both of you for those great tips about my preferred city in the world, NYC. You are right about the tips. We should be careful with the tipping. On the topic of the tipping, it is about time to re-educate some of the waiters and waitresses in NYC: at many restaurants, they take generous tips for granted. I was recently at a restaurant in NYC where I gave a ridiculously generous tip to my waiter (25% of the bill!!). Then the person I was dining with said...a bit loudly...that I was a bit too generous, only to have the waiter replicating that our table is only a table of 2 persons, so he is not getting any considerable tips from us compared to a table with more patrons. And I am not kidding. They are really losing the sense of appreciation and taking your tips for granted.

Winter temperatures Nights are cold and frigid, between −2 and 4 °F (−18 to −15 °C). Most of Central New York, Mid Hudson Valley, and the Catskills have moderate temperatures that are not very cold but not mild, Between 30-35 °F (−1 to 1 °C). Nights are cold but not frigid, between 18-23 °F (−7 to −5 °C).

Great videos! Very accurate and to the point. Old time New Yorkers always double the tax to compute the tip. (you can round-up). Please do not walk three abreast. The streets are a form of transportation. Ubers have become pricey so do not dismiss a yellow cabs out of hand. Halal carts can be very good and cheap and a step above Mc D. thanks!
