A Very important condition to define how much yarn you need is the shape of your stitches:
V-shape, X-shape/semi-X. The stitch shape depends on what crochet technique you use - yarn over or yarn under the hook.
If you wrap the thread, placing the hook underneath the yarn strand (Yarn Under - circular movement of the hook from the right to the left - this makes V-shaped stitch, if you put the hook over the yarn strand (Yarn Over - circular movement from the right to the left) - this makes X-shaped stitches, and if you make yarn under then yarn over, this technique gives us semi-X stitches. You will need much more yarn for the fabric made in Yarn Over technique compared with the amount needed for Yarn Under technique.
