They forgot to mention one more technique - 4 wheel sliding (or whatever it is called). That is when entry speed is very big, so fronts are unable to turn the car and you have understeer, and then you slam throttle and turn the car with back wheels, while fronts are still turning where they were before. And then you gradually straighten up fronts (maybe tiny bit of opposite lock) and launch yourself out of the turn.60s F1 used to turn like that. They say Fanghio invented it.

Here's an accurate statement that answers it quickly: Drifting is the general term for a slide in a car around a corner. It also refers to a kind of judged motorsport where people drift for show. A powerslide is a very basic drifting technique in which a RWD or heavily biased 4WD car slides using wheelspin to initiate the drift.
@ernestochang17447 жыл бұрын
i always do a powerslide on racing games, a drift happens naturally in a corner but its not recommened since you do go about 25% slower and you wasted 6% of the back tires

Someone explained to me that true drifting is controlling your car when it's just beyond the limits of grip. Basically racing your car just past the point where your tires are still gripping. Controlling the slip past the limits is drifting. Whereas powersliding relies more on the engine than inertia to induce that same slip.

When it has more grip it start to rotate more violently, especially with an lsd. On the snow it’s much easier. For the poweslide you use the brakes a little while turning and release them gradually. By braking you shift the weight forward and the front tires get more grip, the rear becomes loose, but if you brake too hard, the available grip is lost for braking the car and you won’t be able to steer. So there is a sweet spot for the fastest turn in. However if there is too much grip (for example with a front wing set up for high downforce) the turn it may be too fast and it will have the tendency to spin out of control. You may think the heavy front cars (fwd usually) will turn in better based on this logic but it’s in fact the opposite. The fwd load front the tires more reducing the grip a bit. The front tires have more grip because of weight but that is compensated by more mass in the front, whereas with weight transfer the mass of the front remains the same so the car pushes down on the wheels but the mass that produces the centrifugal force doesn’t change

My definition: Drift: when youre in a race Powerslide: when youre on free roam -Sourse: nfs underground2 xD
@fourwheeldrift92995 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree with the polarities proposed here. A powerslide is a means of INITIATING a drift. Technical definitions of drift range from intentional controlled oversteer to "intentional controlled oversteer throughout an entire corner." Well if a powerslide allows one to take an entire corner sideways (potentially an adjacent corner) it would meet the definition REGARDLESS of which you want to choose. A similar means of drift initiation is the braking drift initiation. In which one (basically) initiates a powerslide at the entry of the corner by loading up the front tires under heavy braking before turning in sharply and giving throttle. Keichi Tsuchiya (the drift king) has plenty of helpful videos on all of this.

So pretty much: Powersliding - Sliding after apex Drifting - Sliding before apex ok thanks i got it
@gizmodobaggins70404 жыл бұрын
Godzilla this video doesn’t even make any sense though, because the apex of a turn is where you start reducing steering lock and unless you’re chaining drifts (left side drift to right side drift or vica versa) the apex can be in any number of places. A similar definition to this is the closest spot to the interior of a corner, and while drifting, your simulated steering lock (lateral force) on the car is usually modulated to maintain control and can be lowered or raised at any point. Initiation of a drift is usually at the apex, for safety, having your rears slide out usually means that your car comes closer to the edge of the track, both by sliding and the fact that your rear swings to the side, but it can be initiated anywhere if you’re skilled enough, same with power slides, anywhere, but sliding into the interior of the corner is way more likely lol.
@gizmodobaggins70404 жыл бұрын
TL;DR Drifting is a controlled slide where the back wheels lose traction, power sliding is using power to initiate a slide where the back wheels lose traction. When power sliding you can drift, or you can just power slide, it depends on if you control it after the initiation of the slide.
@gizmodobaggins70404 жыл бұрын
Another thing I just realised thanks to you. They probably think drifting is before the apex, because the setup to initiate the slide is before the apex, so you can start sliding the moment you pass the apex.

Drifting: "A driving technique where the driver intentionally oversteers, loss of traction in the rear wheels or all tires, while maintaining control for the entirety of a corner." Powersliding: "A throttle-on induced oversteer. Initiating a drift (oversteer) by applying the throttle in a turn enough to make the rear wheels break traction and slide out" So it's pretty simple really. hey guys coo vid, been enjoying all of them! keep em coming! I'd just like to say I drive an e34 m5 on daily basis, pretty much stock apart from suspension and you are forgetting the easiest way of innitiating a drift, the 'fient' I beleive its called, It's much more controllable less scary than a clutch kick, especially at higher speeds. Approaching the corner you want to drift, you turn the opposite way then flick it in using the cars weight to start the drift and catch the oversteer! No handbrake or clutch needed. Just throttle and steering control. Turn right to go left! Clutch kicks are great if your revs are low or you are low torque as you said but I find this much easier!

all ricers/Young civic drivers need this video
@shona55127 жыл бұрын
Luis Madero Yes because _every_ young person that drives a Civic is a ricer.. When will that stupid fucking generalisation end.. Hondas are good cars man, stop living with your bullshit Internet ignorance, most people who own civics just lower them and straight pipe their exhaust. Not exactly a ricer.

Luis Madero It's a joke the first few times.. But when it's a constant comparison made between civic drivers and ricers, it just borders on sheer ignorance.

I like to think the difference is one is quicker than the other. drift is more of a showing off thing and power sliding would be like what rally drivers do to come out of the corner in a straight line
@_SKDK_6 жыл бұрын
you're the closest I've seen here. From what i hear both in forums and during the event at road Atlanta, drifting and power-sliding are identical, the difference being the inputs. Drifting is what rwd cars have to do, the car requires a lot more control from throttle and brakes. Power-sliding is what AWD cars do. They can throw it in and keep it pinned and it almost "autopilots" compared to rwd. You can see it in rally racing and gymkhana videos where the AWD cars require far less counter steering to maintain the slide but in DRIFT cars youll see much more counter steer, so much so that drift knuckles are installed to get that much more control out of it. Of course steering isn't all there is, but power-sliding an AWD car is more forgiving than drifting in a RWD. If you tried to throw a RWD car around like Ken Block does you'd spin out repeatedly, there's no power train cushion to help you out. Still, to do either takes practice.

By this video's standards, Scandinavian Flick could be considered 'power sliding' since you never handbrake or clutch kick to break the wheels loose. If anything, a power slide is a specific kind of drift. Formula D drivers do it all the time on long sweeping banked turns. Start corner and add throttle before apex to break the rear end loose. Not hard to do when you've got enough power to break the rear loose in a straight line. Sliding is sliding. All that matters is how cool you look while doing it.

Powerslide: slamming the gas while exiting a turn can cause loose traction makeing your cars tail end slide-out words. Drifting: forcing your car to oversteer as you enter a turn with perfect throttle control and steering.

Clutch kicks don't hurt the clutch to bad (some standard clutchs may start slipping but that is then a good excuse to get a performce clutch that won't give you any problems and can handle clutch kicks all day) but it can easily damage your gearbox if you are too harsh. My advise to new comers is go to a "wet" event, and I don't mean one where alcohol is availble.

Before watching the video, this is how I've always understood it: Drifting: Understeer going into a corner Powersliding: Oversteer going out of a corner
@sethmanukula1765 жыл бұрын
Power sliding is drifting whereas drifting is not necessarily powersliding Drifting consists in going further than the grip limit of the tires, which results in your car "drifting" Power sliding is sliding the vehicule using the engine's strength Esliding is sliding it by using the e-brake Many other techniques can have you going sideways Drifting is the art of using and mastering all these techniques Therefore, rally masters are potential drifting super-sayians
