People often don't quite understand how Neanderthals were different, or what they did except from have big foreheads. Were they that different from us, given they reproduced with us and seem to have been ill-fated equals? I shed some light on the situation, without a clear conclusion of course, as it's for you to decide based on the analysed evidence and facts.

Not in the near future. We still don't know how their vocal apparatus looked like and worked, so we don't know what sounds they were capable of producing, and even if we knew what sounds they could produce we can't know how their languages sounded like. When we trace back languages for about 10 000 years ago or more, we use data available to us now, like writings and related languages that are still in use, and we use that information to infer how an older version of the language sounded like. However there's no living neanderthal language for now, so we can't know for sure. Supposing they had a language similar to the ones sapiens can produce, there could have been some borrowing of words into proto-indo-european or even the precursor of euskera, but this falls completely in the realm of speculation.

Where do you get the idea that they fought bare handed? Almost all scholars agree that they used short thrusting spears, heck even the oldest wooden weapon ever found was a wooden spear in Germany pre-human era... Also there’s a find of a cave (I can’t remember where) that had a pile of stones in a semi-circle that pre dates human arrival. Also even though pitch can be made using basic ingredients, it’s a complex process that makes little for a lot of work, meaning they may have had a more efficient system of making it then even we have today. Also they used red paint, which we’ve found evidence for in Spain. Also Homo Heidelbergensis is the most commonly accepted common ancestor, with the two groups splitting likely 400,000 years ago plus or minus about 1,000 or more years (likely more, 400,000 is a low estimate, but likely not any more that 500,000 in my opinion) Also no there was not 50 humans at one point, closer to a few thousand according to the articles talking about the event your referring too, 50 would’ve been likely well past the point of return for our species, as that’s less then a single tribe of people, and there’s is no way we wouldn’t get severe inbreeding problems at that point...

The whole extinction date is still a mystery. They say Neanderthals died out around 39,000 years ago, but only base that off of European dates, it is fully acknowledged that Neanderthals could have survived longer in Siberia. It is my understanding that only the Neanderthals in the northern reaches of their range, were hyper carnivores. The majority of the population/those in coastal areas had a more varied diet. I happen to think that Neanderthals did have language, even if we couldn't speak it, and could be as culturally complex as Homo sapiens were at the time.

Thank you for posting this. I am fascinated by Neanderthals, who survived conditions which might well kill many of us. I'm glad our view of them has evolved and become much more nuanced over the century-plus since Boule's analysis. These people were not dumb brutes. They were intelligent, sensitive, empathetic and well adapted to the conditions of Ice Age Europe. They may even have been Europe's first cave painters and there is a construction in Bruniquel cave in France that has been date to 175,00 years before the present. This would have taken some foresight and planning, since the construction area is over 300 feet from the entrance and fire would have had to be used to see by since no light reaches that far.

First I wanna say I love your channel and this is a well made video. I don’t intend this as a pretentious correction or an insult- but as an anthropology major, I want to stop the spread of misinformation. I will say that a lot of the information in it was pretty out dated- for instance we’ve known for several years that Homo Sapiens have been anatomically modern for at least 200,000 years, Neanderthals used thrusting spears, they would have had high pitched voices but were almost certainly biologically capable of speech (mentally capable is another question but given their proportional brain size it’s extremely likely). As someone who practices primitive skills as well, Birch tar definitely requires complex thought- especially to come up with it on your own. We’ve found a fire hardened wood spear (the one mentioned by another commenter) that dates back like 700-800k years (don’t have time to look it up for the exact date rn but it’s in that range). Also, homo habilis is certainly not the most recent common ancestor, but I think you meant to say Heidelbergensis which IS the most likely last common ancestor, so I’ll give ya that one. On the issue of genetics- we absolutely can trace it and know for sure the timeline of the split, we’ve literally sequenced most if not all of the entire Neanderthal genome, I need to look up whether we’ve finished or not and will edit accordingly. But yeah- sequencing it is HOW we know we interbred with them, which you did mention. Also re religion and burial- we know that homo heidelbergensis buried their dead intentionally, and with possessions, often seemingly ceremonial ones (a rose quartz biface hand axe, for instance). There’s a site in Europe, I forgot the name, but it’s essentially a cave that used to have a chute leading above ground, and it seems that heidelbergensis threw their dead in this hole for a very very long time. It seems very ceremonial but we obviously can never be certain. Neanderthals almost certainly did too- and as another commenter mentioned there is some evidence of a bear cult of some sort, but it’s extremely likely they had religion- if not true “gods” per se, certainly some simple form of animism. Also side thing about tents- we have direct evidence of upper Paleolithic Homo sapiens pitching tents with skins and mammoth ivory- not sure where but I wanna say Siberia? I will also re-research that and comment again. Another commenter mentioned this as well but it was a lot more than 50 Individuals- I’ve heard 600 as a number a lot but I agree a couple thousand is more likely. Also re: interspecies violence. Very very scant evidence exists, but it does exist. We’ve found a single Neanderthal in Israel who was very clearly killed by a thrown spear. Which is a telltale calling card of Homo sapiens- but we can’t be certain it wasn’t an accident, etc. All in all awesome video and I mean no attempt to usurp or insult, just to update and correct misinformation. :) I May be wrong on a few things too, and if so please inform me so I can update the comment.

It is absurd to assume that Neanderthals had a wide variety of stone tools, yet chose to take down megafauna bare handed. The confidence with which it is asserted that they did not even use a sharpened stick or a hand axe is completely unjustified.

A few of the claims at the end of the video took me by surprise; I haven't heard about a point in history when humans were brought down to about 50 individuals by disease; could anyone send me a source about that? A bit later on, though, there are a few claims which seemed mistaken to me. First of all, the claim that Humans date back to about 100,000 BCE, and Neanderthals to 130,000 BCE; the commonly presented dates are 200,000 and 230,000, respectively, so this may have just been misspeaking. That being said, some finds push the origin of Homo sapiens sapiens back to around 315,000 BCE (give or take a few tens of millennia), namely the Jebel Irhoud remains (though whether or not these remains should be considered anatomically modern is a matter of some debate). After that comes the more questionable claim that the common ancestor of Humans and Neanderthals was Homo habilis or even an Australopithicine; I'm not sure what the creator of this video based this speculation on, but it significantly differs from scientific consensus. Our common ancestor with Neanderthals is generally acknowledged as Homo antecessor or H. rhodesiensis (if the latter is truly a distinct species, which is debated), with genetic evidence placing our divergence around 800,000 BCE. Some hypotheses instead place Homo erectus as our common ancestor, while still maintaining approximately the same date of divergence as suggested by genetic evidence. Never before have I seen it suggested that the divergence could have been earlier than this, and I find the suggestion of a divergence before Erectus highly unlikely.

Neanderthal brains were only larger to control their correspondingly larger bodies (and eyes), not in proportion to their bodies. Proportionally, neanderthal brains were somewhat smaller than human (homo sapiens) brains. Also, homo sapiens had a larger frontal lobe (prefrontal cortex) which relates to higher order thought.

This specialization of their brains, the scientists propose, mean that less neural tissue was left over for higher-order reasoning, problem-solving and creating elaborate social networks. This would limit the Neanderthals’ abilities to, for example, trade for resources not endemic to their local habitat, or in times of local scarcity. Additionally, the scientists claim, Neanderthals’ ability to develop or learn new technologies could have suffered due to their brains’ specialization on visual acuity.”

What was the event during which early modern humans almost died off that you talk about at the end of the video?
@dc4457
@dc4457 4 жыл бұрын
About 74,000 years ago the population of modern humans experienced a severe bottleneck. Not as far as the speaker suggests, 50 individuals could never propagate a species, but 4000 is a more believable figure I have read. At this time there was a supervolcano eruption in Indonesia at Mt. Toba which blew up and left a crater roughly 70 x 20 miles which is now a lake. There was a massive climate change or "volcanic winter" that lasted years if not decades and probably shut down most plant growth in the southern hemisphere. No plant growth means mass starvation if the animals you eat die out or move away and there is little plant food left to gather. This may be the event that forced the large scale exodus from Africa, which was already a desert and not the easiest place to survive even in good years.

Since click languages ( such as that spoken by the San people and other peoples in Africa) are considered the oldest in the world, could Neanderthal languages have been along the lines of those? It's impossible to know of course, but I consider it at least a possibility. Naturally it would be a language different than that of African click languages, but a language all the same.

There's a multitude of evidence showing neanderthals used spears in different ways for hunting. One of which being direct melee, and possibly as thrown projectiles. A far cry from barehanded tackling. We don't "know" what neanderthals had for clothing, for hide tends not to be preserved although that doesn't mean they could't stitch. The birch tar had to be manufactured more complexly than a simple fire due to the quantity that it was used in. The art has been to obscured over time to get an idea of what it was intended to be. Our common ancestor was far closer than homo habilis. This is evident with our shared complex speech and fire usage, in addition to a multitude of physical features shared between us which are more recent then Homo habilis. Despite the old views present in this video I am appreciative of the newer views also. Neanderthals were for all intents and purposes humans like us.

There are some humans today that have puberty as early. There have been 12 year old girls that have become pregnant and have children. Personally I began puberty at age 9 or so. I was 6' 0" tall by age 13. I only grew 3 inches more for my current height of 6' 3". As usual, generalizations are unhelpful when seeking to understand the Neanderthals. Of course, I have some Neanderthal ancestry like most people with Eurasian ancestry, but I would be surprised that this would have influenced by development. I wonder how many other modern people have experienced puberty as early as difference claimed for Neanderthals. It would be an interesting possibility if people with some Neanderthal ancestry have physical traits that are actually more classic Neanderthal rather than African Homo Sapiens.

@PvtPuplovski
@PvtPuplovski 2 жыл бұрын
Possibly, but the whole concept of races and ethnicities are unimportant when it comes to the history of any animal as a whole. Like different dog breeds, it’s all one species with very different accumulative genetic qualities. Race/Breed tends to just be a product of a species’ ability to quickly adapt to different environments, hence why animals like elephants don’t to have different races unless they’ve been separated for millions of years.

Neanderthals may have practiced natural birth control like lions in hard times. Because of this perhaps Sapiens could have out bred them. They may have also led subsistence lives that is happy to exist simply day to day much like the Inuit whereas Sapiens may have led improvement lives that is bettering their existence so living in fixed or semi fixed villages where situations improve.

The largest brains in modern humans apparently belong to some tribes in Mongolia, also with larger occipital lobes, which is thought to be why they have such an extraordinary ability to remember every detail and location of their otherwise 'nondescript' landscape. And Neanderthals likely had much the same specialized abilities for successful hunting. There's also an interesting theory that Neanderthals would be considered 'autistic' by today's standards, and lacking in not only the language skills of Homo Sapiens, but more important, the social communication skills for organizing tribes and larger, more successful groups. If so, it's been suggested that autism isn't really a 'defect', but simply a holdover from previous human 'iterations'.

I've read that some have determined that brains were developed specifically to accommodate complex motor functions after studying certain aquatic life that cannibalize their own brains once they have reached a stage in their lives where they no longer require self propulsion. It might be that Neanderthal's larger brain mass was to accommodate their more physically demanding lifestyle, and to provide greater neuromuscular control and contractions. Muscle structure and function, and grip strength have both been shown to corelate with brain structure.
