Ugh this is so spot on. Grew up with an Asian mom and she never expressed herself directly. It was always passive aggressive or sarcastic. Basically I was groomed to push through any pain in order to succeed.

This is so sad . I dated an Asian man and boy oh boy it was so tough . He hid all of his emotions and he thought talking about emotions was weak . Well I broke up with him yesterday , but today I asked him to come over so we can really have a deep convo about our feelings . I’m going to try to get him to open up to me by being empathetic . I want him to cry , show me his emotions , tell me what he’s bottling up . Wish me luck . I’ll let you guys know how it works .... if he even comes over .

Any updates on this? I'm genuinely interested in how it went.

I'm 46 years old and was vehemently opposed to seeking psychological help. We don't talk about our feelings. It's almost taboo. I say "was" and "almost" because I did see a therapist a few months ago. I have to say, it was a waste of time (and money). Sharing our deepest thoughts equating weakness is deeply instilled in us, so much so that I gave it a try and decided it's not for me. To quote Tony Soprano "There's no cure for life". I wish you luck, but this is what you're working with with your ex bf.

I agree with this video, I grew up here in the states and my family is from Asia, we have quite similar parents/family dynamic. Mental health is very important

What is the word at 6:05 with "transparency and"? I don't think "culture ability" is it. It sounds closer to "comfortability." As the second ingredient of what makes a good listener, this is an important word.

Maxx you don't need Alan Phan, I guarantee there is people around you that u can talk to about your "stuff". You just first need to be an ounce as vulnerable as Alan. Don't judge or assume people won't understand, you'd be suprised how much other people can empathize.

Sorry we, emigrant moms can't be therapist too. We are struggling with surviving and providing to our children in a different culture, different language. Sorry boy but all children of emigrants have to go through something like this.
