For the past years I've been searching for a digital camera that gives me a similar photography experience to an analog film camera. During this quest I've tried the Fujifilm X100V, Fujifilm X100VI, Fujifilm X-T30, Fujifilm X-Pro 3, especially trying out all of the Fujifilm film simulation features and recipes. In this video I finally try a Leica range finder camera, the Leica M9. With the M9's legendary CCD Sensor, and a more intentional photography experience, is the Leica M9 still worth it in 2024? This is my full Leica M9 review. After using the Leica M9 for a week doing, automotive photography, street photography and landscape photography I am finally sharing my thoughts on this 15 year old camera. Just like the Leica Q3, Leica M11, Ricoh GRIII or Leica D-Lux 8, the Leica M9 is a pretty compact camera and many people online say the CCD sensor offers a dreamy film-look modern digital cameras can't keep up with.

I forgot to mention one important thing in the video: The M9 I use in the video had the sensor replaced. The original M9 sensor had issues where the sensor glass would cause the sensor to corrode. If you're looking to buy an M9, make sure you check if the replacement has been done.

This was such a great video! I just adore your pictures🥰 Luckily for me I have already secured myself a sensor replaced M9 copy and I definitely believe the thing about the m9 colour magic dust thing:) However I can report other Sd cards worked fine for me so I wouldn‘t be put of from buying one if I was you… Although I love my M9 colours I might still need to check out your presets. Man, some of the pictures just transformed to a whole new level…😍

Loved your review. This is my new everyday camera and I got it for about 1900 EUR. There is something fun and freeing about this camera when you are doing your personal work. Manual focus, somewhat inconsistent exposure meter, and I put the 40mm summicron which it doesn't have the frame lines for. This makes me not care much about getting the perfect shot but rather just take a shot, which I think is more important when it comes to your everyday camera. For everything else my Sony alphas and Fuji GFX will take care of me.

The photos straight out of the camera are really contrasty with blocked up shadows. They look film like, but like slide film (the story is that the designers of the sensor which was made by Kodak were trying to make it look like Kodachrome). If you want to get a more negative film look, there is actually plenty of detail in the shadows if you raise them in lightroom and play a bit with curves. Capture One actually does a better job with the files but I could never get used to the interface. I wish it were a bit lighter as it's a bit of a brick but the shooting experience is pretty amazing, except for the time it takes to write a photo to the card. Shooting and winding a frame of film is actually faster.

Great video and excellent analysis! I have an M240 in the mail but had been leaning toward M8 or M9 for the CCD sensor. Hope I don't regret not going for Kodak sensor in a Leica...also ordered the Voigtlander Nokton 40/f1.4.

Your sd cards didn't work because while you had the right size you forgot the time period it was made. The speed is too fast you needed a much slower card a class 3 or 4 instead of 10.

I've read reports online of people getting new and fast cards to work in the M9, but I didn't have any luck unfortunately. It's not a huge problem, just a bit weird having to trust these super old cards haha.

the m series are such nice cameras. very different but also very cool. i want one but the prices are... nuts. guess my only leica will be the x1 for the forseeable future.

Yeah, nuts is a fitting description 😂 Especially the prices on the new ones, like the M11, are extra nuts.

11:39 Raw only doesn't make sense with the M9. The colors are really unique in the JPEGs, so you should have them for reference to your raw file. Every color profile applied during import by LR (such as Adobe Standard, etc.) will change the colors from the beginning, and without the JPEG I don't have a point of reference to what the colors the M9 "thought" they should be.

You're right, raws are always just "interpreted" by editing software, but you can still very much see differences between sensors and manufacturers. Jpegs would have a been a really interesting comparison though! I'll keep that in mind if I ever revisit the camera.

Is there a way or some third party profile that allows to get back those jpeg colors with raw development ?

To be honest, I don't think so. It would mean revealing Leica's "color science", so how they achieve their look to their photos, which we will not get. Closest thing I have managed is to mimic a RAW to the corresponding JPEG in Lightroom. Heck of a lot of work, and only works for the scene/photo you shot.

Do need a uvir cut filter? I know for the M8’s you do need it but for the M9’s Leica fixed the issue. Have you seen a difference with or without it? 4:04

X Pro3 and Fujifilm x100vi user here: almost bought an m240, but the rare reasonable side of my brain pumped the breaks like wtf, man?? It is too expensive for a fun camera and I got four kids, one being a baby. Manual focus with one hand is a bitch, so this will have to wait. It would be my leasure camera, my solo camera, my non family camera and for that it is too expensive eventhough m240 Leicas are surprisingly cheap...for a ten year old camera lmao.

Yeah if my goal was photographing kids, pets, or other unpredictably moving creatures I would definitely pick a camera with autofocus haha, the X100VI is really good for that.

It's an expensive digital camera. It's a rangefinder, but that's a focusing system. Film and digital are completely different things. The title smacks a lot of the cult of old CCD cameras being described as "film like" when they are just poorly performing old technology. The M9 is a fine camera, but it's zero percent "film like."

That CCD sensor was just amazing though! The images were so crisp it was almost uncanny. Add to that the joy of focusing with the rangefinder patch and you have a winner for sure. I sold mine a few years ago when I started to shoot concerts and needed a sensor that I could push more into high-iso’s, but if I had continued on my path of only shooting portraits I would’ve kept the M9 for sure.
