After the 2017 fires in SoCal, a car was found near my sister's house. The driver had been missing for years, and it took a once a century fire to burn away the ground cover to find them. A car accident sounds pretty reasonable to me.

It doesn't even need to be a particularly "waterlogged" area for that to happen: the later seasons of "unsolved Mysteries" featured the case of a young man and his girlfriend who had gone missing one night while driving in the cornfields of the Midwest, and there was not only far less water in the area, but far more grounds for suspicion: the young man's hat was found in an area which had previously been thoroughly searched. Or so they thought: the car, replete with the two bodies, was found in a nearby stream a couple of years after the broadcast, having visibly driven off a bridge.

With cases like this, where multiple people and a car just vanish into thin air, I always tend to think it’s at the bottom of some body of water or ravine somewhere, as she mentioned, and that it’s just a matter of time before someone stumbles upon it. Hopefully through videos like this, somebody might be able to remember and connect the dots one day. If not for this family, then for someone.

If this was in the mountains, the Sierras up near Sacramento, I am almost certain this is what happened. A friend of my brother disappeared, only to be found a couple of years later in the mountains. First his car was found where it had tumbled over the edge of a mountain road into a river hundreds of feet below. then he was found many feet above, where he had died of his injuries after apparently trying to crawl up the incline. First snow, then undergrowth covered both car and body. I hope they just started a new life, but I don´t really think this is in the cards.

@@kadyk4185 Or perhaps he thought you had to wait 48 hours or more before you could declare a person missing. That was the policy in a lot of places in 1978. I don't think it is overly strange for her father to send a letter to report the family missing, in 1978 he was probably under the impression he had to wait 72 hours and thought if he posted the letter when it arrived the police could start looking right away, and if the family had just gone out for an outing they would be home. It sounds exactly like what one of my grandparents would of done in that era.

It's the lack of immediate concern that's odd to me. Nobody, and I mean not one person in the history of missing people, writes a letter to the police when they discover their daughter and young grandchildren missing. You'd want to have a dialogue with the police because 1- you'd want to make damn sure they understood the importance of getting their act together straight away, and 2- so you can give them whatever information they might need to set their wheels in motion. A letter is a casual notification requiring the police to get back to him whenever they've got a minute. It's an inappropriate response suggesting he wasn't really looking to resolve it any time soon, and you'd have to ask yourself why that might be?

@Lucius Cornelius: Maybe the father was keeping a "hands off" approach to his daughter's disappearance. If it looked like she and her boys may have gone on a road trip he may not have been immediately concerned. Also, in the 1970s parents sometimes looked at their children's choices differently: lifestyle/behavior choices that might appear no big deal to us may have been a big deal to them.

"Norma may also have been suffering from depression at the time..." Obviously there are many options as to what could have happened to the poor family, and this doesn't have to be the most likely of them. But even before the quote mentioned above, the scenario made me think of a statement/confession my mom once made; After her divorce from my dad, as the single mom of three young children she was, suffering from untreated depression and an ongoing, severe lack of money, she had thoughts of "going into the river with us". ...Whatever it is that happened: I hope all three of them, including their further family members, are in a good, peaceful place now.

Something similar to another case I had heard of might have happened, where to young women went for a drive never to be seen again. Almost 40 years later the car was recovered from a random lake, and their skeletons were still there, preserved by the swamp. They simply had a car crash and instantly died before sinking into the murky water, they weren’t even that far from home at the time, and yet their families wandered in darkness for decades thinking someone had murdered them.

It wouldn't have to be water the car went into. There's a part of Boston called Back of the Hill. When it was cleared up, there were cars the had not been visible. A car could go off the road into a heavily wooded area, the driver being unconscious, and not able to climb out.

I somehow noticed suddenly that two men had exited a car parked somewhat behind us and they were walking up along side us, one each side of our car. Some alarm bells went off and I instinctively told my mother to put the car in gear and step on the gas at once and we sped out of there. I then explained what I saw. I don't find it strange that an older gentleman in the 70's would write to the police, cellphones didn't exist, not everyone would have had a landline and people of that generation were used to writing important things by letter. Also without any sign of foul play he may have been giving them time to return and respecting his daughter's privacy, no-one knew what day they actually went missing. And back then there were time periods ppl had to wait before filing missing persons reports. What I find strange is that sources obviously differ between witnesses or reportings of the car, gold and blue are not easily mistaken for each other. Sadly I agree with most ppl, that the family are still in the car most likely in water or possibly thick forest. Dreadful to think of their fear realising their fate that way. I hope they are found and soon. ❤❤❤

I found that really odd too. The difference between blue & gold is extreme..not like silver or grey..how could they get this so wrong? Did they not get the exact color from the dmv or family?? So totaly bizarre.

I agree with most of the other comments. So many times in cases like these the cars are found in bodies of water. The only odd thing about this case is the woman’s father writing a letter to the police rather than using the telephone or going in person. I just cannot understand his logic of writing a letter, I hope that one day soon the family get their answers, they deserve some closure after all this time.

I'm sorry but these composite making people need to really step up their game and put more effort in their work. Wth is that at 9:52? It doesn't look like them, and you can literally tell it's the same template with eyes slightly modified. I find this soo infuriating in each case i watch its like these are the images that could lead to a person being discovered do a better job of making them look real and well done. They don't even smooth the eyes or anything, its like they don't care, so annoying! I personally find that so disrespectful to the missing people. Idk if im the only one who gets angered by this.

There were so many active serial killers in that part of California in the late 70s. Many victims were never found also law enforcement officials did not communicate across the city and county lines so as a missing persons report it was probably never put on a BOLO list

I saw a story about a group of teenagers who went out for a drive in 1970 in Oklahoma. Long story short, no one knew anything till a few years ago when their car was found, with their skeletal remains, submerged in a lake. I'm thinking like everyone else here that this is a strong possibility in this case, foul play or not. PS: Look up Foss Lake Oklahoma missing teens if you're interested. Also, another crazy one was a guy in Florida who vanished in 1997, William Moldt, his car found in a muddy pond close by in 2019...on Google Maps of all things! You can see his submerged car from a 2007 Google Maps image. Wild!

The foothills are close as well, i.e., Auburn (I-80) or Coloma (Hwy 50). If they went off the road on one of those narrow curves, or they were forced off the road, they could be in the bushes/trees over the edge of the road.

I can't imagine that someone on welfare would not cash a welfare check if they were going on an extended trip. Also, I've heard of a few verified stories of how decades after the disappearance of a car and its occupants, the car with bodies was found in a body of water after the water level dropped or some long languishing information led to the discovery of the car. I lived in Sacramento in the 1980s. All summers are very hot. I can't imagine how miserable I would have been if I didn't have AC in my house and car. Those rivers, especially the American, must have looked very tempting.

I agree that either the car is in water, or the only other thing that I could see making sense is that if they were basically forced out if home at gunpoint or some so that there wouldn't really be signs of foul play and the person could have either junked the vehicle, submerged it, or stolen it and altered it's appearance, or something else

Aside from bodies of water, I think wooded areas right off of roads that haven’t undergone development over the years are possible, too. If someone falls asleep they could drive off the road and into the woods enough to where they wouldn’t be easily seen from the road/interstate. Especially if the car was damaged and/or wrecked in the process. I even wonder if the car could sit there for long enough to where if the area did get developed decades later and the car was removed along with other debris, workers may not even notice human remains in the vehicle while it was being towed out and moved to a junkyard or dump, if so much time had passed. They were such a cute family, it’s sad.

Many missing people & families have been found with their cars in ponds, rivers & lakes. There have been those found up to 5 decades later. There are several groups that donate their time to look at the bottom of wayerways with sonar. It's unbelievable how many have been found in water.
