I remember reading the story about the missing 3,000 Chinese troops in a book about 35 years ago and it fascinated me. In the book was also a story about 300 villagers in Saskatchewan somewhere that also mysteriously disappeared without a trace one night around 1930. The village was visited each year by a trapper passing through who was the one that discovered the whole village empty of it's people even though all the cooking fires in the house were alight and the men's guns were standing beside the doors in all the houses. I wish I could remember the name of that book it was brilliant.

The Ramree island one is REALLY misleading. They know exactly what happened, it was the the crocodiles. One or two soldiers survived and confirmed it. Their general was crazy and made them march through waist deep mangrove swap that was a breeding ground for salties. They were wiped out, it’s terrifying.
@louisjwiese5515
@louisjwiese5515 4 жыл бұрын
I would agree, but, to catch and consume around a thousand men, it would take a massive amount of crocodiles. If it was perhaps maybe a hundred soldiers, I might believe it. But even then it is a bit much. Perhaps the story has become a bit muddled in terms of factual details.

Mmm... the Chinese government in 1937 was a Nationalist one, nothing at all to do with the PLA or the communist, Chiang Kai-shek's nationalist government was fighting both the communist insurgency of Mao Zedong and also the Japanese from 1937-1945, only during that later conflict was a temporary truce between the nationalist Government and the communists agreed in order to deal with the Japanese first and deal with each other later. In fact if the Soviets didn't hand over all of Manchuria to the communists, and remember Manchuria at the time was China's industrial equivalent to Britain's Sheffield, the Nationalist government would in all likelihood have crushed the communists in due course.

This is a pretty big mistake. To any older person it is like talking about a p.c. in the 1970`s. Dosen`t look good. Incidentally this is why most people don`t understand the current Tiwan crises. The defeated Kuomintang retreated to Tiwan when they lost the rest of China in `49. They inisisted that Tiwan was "Nationalist China" and Biejing was not the real Chinese Government. That is why the Chinese won`t let people use the "Tiwan`s flag" online. Because it is not "Tiwan`s" flag. It`s the flag of China`s old Nationalist Republic. It`s treason tjust to show it o them.

Not quite true on the Norfolk Regiment front. There were survivors who reported back about being machine-gunned at a thin pass causing a break with the force splitting up, some being picked off and not found, with others covering around a mile totaling 180 odd, with many having tried holding out at a farm house; the owner, a turk, confirmed the location of bodies of those who tried holding at the farm in a ravine, where he had put them. We also have letters from some of the men of it, some from hospital and some from turk PoW camps. One survivor, a one Private Sidney Pooly even mentions he heard no mention nor sight of charging into a forest until he'd returned home and heard the rumours, which is mildly amusing. The cloud story also came from a New Zealand regiment; with the rumour the regiment went completely missing, combined with PTSD from mustard gas attacks, a yellow cloud removing soldiers seems like it may be a case of misremembering.

The Ninth Legion also likely didn't disappear, as the more recent archaeological evidence is beginning to dispel the legend. It's remarkably hard for thousands of people to disappear without SOMEONE hearing something about it or someone coming back to tell the tale. Dozens - sure, look at those students that disappeared in Mexico (but even then, people escaped to tell the tale) - hundreds, MAYBE. Thousands? No way, there's always at least ONE protagonist in the bunch. Even in the German-Polish war or the early stages of Operation Barbarossa, when things were so chaotic and entire formations were being wiped off the map in a matter of hours, we can still account for those formations. To make thousands of people disappear requires thousands of people to do the deed, and out of those thousands of people, at least one will have a guilty conscience or will take pride in the deed and brag. We know what happened at Teutoberg Forest, even. CENTURIES ago with the destruction of the entire force (at least, to me knowledge no one escaped), the information still got out and we can still piece together the events.

Actually, we do know what happened to the 9th Legion. They suffered a rather serious defeat at the hands of the native Britons and what was left of the legion was absorbed into other units and it was relocated to... Syria, I believe. The reason everyone assumes they vanished is because they aren't mentioned very often thereafter. Evidence suggests that tensions in Syria were waning at that period and the 9th legion wasn't very active and due to the embarrassing fact that they'd lost their standard in Britannia, the legion was largely relegated to ignored and unpleasant postings, limiting their presence in records even further.

1:47 Fortunately, the KMT, who actually fought the Japanese for most of the war, including at the Marco Polo Bridge, were neither socialist, nor poorly trained, nor under-equipped, being vehemently anti-communist and trained and equipped with the finest in German engineering and material, though factionalism within the Nationalist camp kept them from being a truly effective fighting force.

At the onset of the war they certainly were poorly trained and still pretty poorly equipped. While it is very true that the Kuomintang did the bulk of the fighting (And it is highly questionable why this video keeps referring to what were clearly KMT military actions as actions by the PLA) the Chinese forces were indeed poorly trained and underequipped As for """Finest in German engineering and material"""" that's like saying the US Elite forces is representative of the entire US Armed Forces which is obviously wrong. As a half-Japanese history buff, there is nothing I love more than when the Fortean intersects with established history. Like in the Dab Tsog episode, the two elements inform, feed into, and almost symbolize one another. I must be a bit of a nitpick on some historical details: First, as others have noted, the Chinese soldiers who fought at Marco Polo Bridge, Nanjing, and most of the early conflict were not socialists but Nationalists under the Authoritarian/Capitalist KMT. The main point stands though, that these ill-equipped Chinese soldiers were horribly outclassed. Also, while the *communist* PLA army under Mao did win the civil war in 1949, the KMT itself had regained control of Nanjing after the end of ww2.... Of course, many ordinary Chinese by 1949 had grown to hate the KMT almost as much as the Japanese. (almost)
@AtomicFire1972

And after the KMT retreat to Taiwan (known as Formosa at the time by everyone outside of China), the Chinese learned, to their dismay, the truth of the old Western saying of "better the devil you know". What they got in exchange was far, far worse: a brutal psychopath who became the worst mass murderer of the 20th Century.

Usually you guys do good research. But you keep calling the Chinese forces 'socialist' At that time the Kuomintang (Nationalist) forces were holding power with the Communist insurgency under Mao and others advancing in the Chinese Civil War Today, the Communist regime take credit for wartime fighting against the Japanese but the truth is Mao saw it as an opportunity to defeat the Nationalists. In theory the two sides united to defeat the Japanese (along with the western Allies of course) and when the Communists got the upper hand and declared the PRC in 1949 (ending the main battle phase of the civil war) the Nationalists went to Taiwan. Summed up the CCP takes credit for the Kuomintang sacrifices.

Thanks for posting this. I had read of this mysterious incident many years ago. I would suggest one of edit though. It is incorrect to refer to a 3000 man unit as a ‘battalion’. No army has a battalion with that many troops. It would be more accurate to describe them as the missing Nanjing ‘Brigade’.

@johndavies1090 2 жыл бұрын
I think the 'Black Dog of Mons' - they're also known as the 'hell hounds of no man's land' are reasonably well known to be a myth, on a par with the Angel of Mons. Apparently Ernest Machen, who wrote the original story which inspired it, became quite embarrassed by the Angel's enduring popularity. The Great War spawned a number of these myths - the 'Angel' reappeared in 1918 in some tales, followed by something similar in a battle between Poles and Russians in about 1920, and within the last three weeks has also been claimed in Ukrain. The psychologists have a great time with such incidents!

Leaving behind all that war material is extremely odd, particularly seeing as what it represented. The couldn't make mortars or Maxims, so to leave them lay like that would mean either a sudden and vicious attack (which there seems little evidence of) or something so horrid that it made them all run without thought. honestly, I'm not sure. If it was an attack, why didn't the attacker seize the supplies? And if they saw something, what could be so awful as to make them flee like that?

Theres a very easy explanation to all these disappearances. They were taken by an alien race helped by a renegade Time Lord. The plan was to have all these soldiers from different time periods fight in war games and then make a supreme army from the survivors. It's all documented in the Patrick Troughton Dr. Who serial 'The War Games' :D

Sadly i lost all my focus in the story with the historical inaccuracies that i assume are not your fault or your team’s fault, but rather the sketchy origins of the story itself. You see, there’s a great difference between the socialist/communist forces of Mao and the KMT/Nationalist (right wing, by the way) troops of Chiang Kai Shek and his warlords. Also, Nanjing/Nanking was given back to the KMT in 1945 as the Japanese were peacefully withdrawing from China following the surrender of the Emperor. So there are inconsistencies in the story that are hard to ignore, specially for someone who has studied History. The art is shockingly beautiful, so I guess I can give that and your wonderful narration to this, i believe, urban legend
