After reading the book and learning about Tommy's acting chops, there's 0 chance that they could have pulled off Tommy playing himself without it becoming a separate movie about how Tommy just can't act.

@@evanrussell5933, when adapting material from a book, you need to clearly communicate the meaning of the book without having to read the material to understand. If Adam realized that this was an adaptation of a book but never read it, he should not need to go out of his way to buy the book just to understand an important. In my opinion, this just demonstrates a flaw, although I have not seen the movie nor read the book.

"Part of me doesn't really understand why Tommy Wiseau couldn't have just played himself" So many problems with this criticism. Has Adam seen Tommy in anything other than the room? He's like a cartoon character. Also impossible to work with. Also he looks 10x more zombified than he did 15 years ago. And yes, they made the ending more Hollywood. That's what writers do when adapting novels. The actual real life way Tommy realized the Room was a joke of a movie would make for a super clunky ending to a movie.

king potato Like Adam said, Tommy was super bitter about people not taking his serious drama seriously for weeks of showings until he one day just decided he could make money if he himself accepted the Room as a movie for people to laugh at. In Franco's movie, they condensed it into one showing (The premiere) to make for a satisfying climax.

David Lynch also the criticism about dubbing the scenes is a bit overexaggerated because the dubs aren't as crucial to the comedy as he thinks it is. The only scene where the lack of dubbing is a shame is the flower shop scene

Have to disagree with your comment about how they could have had Tommy Wiseau play himself. One of the most enjoyable parts about seeing a "based on a true story" film (for me, at least) is getting to see the actor reenact the person they're playing. Having him play himself would kind of ruin the magic. That's just me, though.

The thing about Tommy's performance is that he didn't understand what everyone else knew: it was terrible. You can't recreate that now because he's tried to run with the "black comedy" route.

Also Tommy is infamously hard to work with as both the book and the movie, the Disaster Artist, illustrate plainly (plus you can just see how done everyone is with Tommy when you watch the Room, clearly they don't want to be working with him).

I think the problem is that the movie removed some other parts of the story and focused more in the production in the film (also removed the narration). I think that make it hard to understand without reading the book.
@fanaticaH

Antiform What I understood when I read the book it was Tommy was so happy when the movie was screening that he didn't really notice that people were laughing. But later he became disappointed when he learned that they all thought it was an ironic movie at best. And then he was desperate that it was flopping and would pay to keep in on theaters for months, also to promote (don't ask where the money came from, no one really knows, that also is talked on the book). But then the movie was discovered by hipsters who loved it ironically and made it an obscure film that would screen for years and have a following. That made him happy. He still promoted it as a drama. The book doesn't mention this, but he didn't start to promote it as a comedy until it became an internet meme (he changed the DVD then and the past cover became a collectible amongst fans). He kinda tried to make it look like the comedy was intentional. I think it aired on Adult Swim around that time.

i went to a screening of the room last year, appropriately drunk and stoned, and it was beautiful to share the experience with a theatre full of equally drunk and stoned idiots throwing spoons and shouting out one-liners. it was like a shared psychosis. the guy who played mark was there and he had a few pages from the first draft of the script and invited people from the audience to do a reading with him. it's nice how the people involved seem to have gotten over it by now and are able to laugh and joke about the whole thing.

Floydthefuckbag I think it became a meme BECAUSE it aired in Adult Swim and a lot of people came in contact with this obscure movie. Then other people wanted to see it because the ones who watched the April Fools screening were talking on how hilariously bad it was, then someone shared a pirated DVD download (I don't remember I they just shared the link or if they decided to upload their own DVD to the internet to share). The case is that this started the persecution of the Room bootleg downloads around the web, as Tommy is extremely crazy about copyright (If you've read the book, you know that he went as far to remove all labels on things and also that's the reason of the spoon portraits because he didn't want to have the mock photos that come with the portraits and they didn't have time to take photos from the cast). Then he started flagging KZbin reviews that had clips of his movie.

My biggest issue with the movie is that I read the awesome book (and listened to the audiobook, which is also incredible). The book is an interesting look into the life of a struggling actor in Hollywood from two points of view: Greg and Tommy. The making of The Room is a big part of it, but there is a lot more going on underneath it all. It actually became one of my favorite books by the time I was done with it. Its funny, answers some questions about the making of The Room (while also raising all new ones), but also captures struggling, perseverance, and the trials and tribulations that go hand in hand with that. This movie adaptation felt like it was made just so James Franco could play Tommy Wisseau (which he does quite well) and recreating moments from The Room. This is fun, but by making it a vehicle for expressing fandom for the best worst movie ever made, it also kind of misses the point of the book.

I was extremely disappointed. Having read The Disaster Artist, I got a very definite sense that as time wore on and the shoot dragged out, the people working on The Room were growing more and more resentful of Tommy. Tommy to this day seems so oblivious to the fact that how he sees himself and how others see him are worlds apart. Probably the best illustration of this is when Greg Sestero is offered a small part in a show by that guy who used to be in Malcolm In The Middle. I am not even sure that happened in reality, but one thing that *did* happen in reality was that Greg was getting small dribbles of work here and there, even getting himself an SAG card, when his agent called him and told him that one director who was directing a film he appeared as an extra in responded to a query saying said director did not remember Greg at all. As Greg Sestero explains in the book, saying you were on a film and having people not even remember you were there is a firing offense at talent agencies. Fortunately for him, the agency saw him for the semi-gifted new kid on the block that he was and just quietly warned him that in future, you should only put things on your resumé that you know directors are going to remember you for. In The Disaster Artist According To The Franco Brothers, Sestero wants to take a day off shooting The Room so he can work on his offered role at this project previously described. Somehow, Wiseau talks him into staying on The Room and shaving off his beard. What makes this particularly disturbing is that whilst an agency just might forgive you for putting your work as an extra where nobody remembers you on a resumé, talking yourself onto a project and then failing to turn up is probably very much an agency firing offense. So the effect of this scene is not merely reaffirming Fictional Greg Sestero's loyalty to Tommy Wiseau, it is basically showing that Tommy Wiseau guilt-trips and emotionally blackmails Fictional Greg Sestero into ruining Fictional Greg Sestero's career. Gee, and we are supposed to sympathise with these guys. Basically, the problem with The Disaster Artist According To The Franco Brothers is that it takes too many liberties with reality, and almost every liberty that it takes is not an improvement.

It's so clear that this is kind of a fluke for Franco. He's not taking criticism seriously or improving his craft, he just took on a project everyone would love no matter what. Really glad you pointed that out, he needs all the criticism he can get. Movie still looks like a lot of fun though.

About the dubbing problem, doesn't this movie just show the making of the movie? Specifically the shooting part. Like they don't show the end result which was dubbed right? I haven't watched the movie so I don't know, but I think they're not wrong there

Things from the book I wish had made it into the movie: - The post production dubbing - Kyle Vogt having to leave production like he said he would, and his character getting unceremoniously replaced. - Tommy's SAG commercial for Street Fashions USA - Street Fashions USA in general - "Hospital on Guerrero Street" being an improv line to get a rise out of Tommy - Tommy's five minutes of silence on the anniversary of 9/11 that he kept restarting if anyone made any noise - Calling Dan back to play Chris-R in the rooftop reshoot of his scene, and my favorite exchange from the book: "Did Tommy blow up the studio yet?" "No, but he's working on it." I'm probably nitpicking, but still, it was a fun movie.

The movie was okay-pretty watchable and I thought the cameo's added to the fun, but the book is far superior. There are so many stories left out. Tommy is quite unlikable in the book which has been massively altered for the film.

Hate me all you want, YMS fans. I think you're nitpicking the hell out of this movie. Like you treat their neglect of the dubbing as though it's the Original fucking Sin. And the "unspecial" directing is a criticism you could apply to most directors who are not super-famous. Not a perfect movie, but you're bloating up the 5-8% imperfection just for the sake of criticizing it. And sorry, those attempts at criticisms are just too damn petty to take seriously.

If you enjoyed this film or even "The Room", please read the book. There are so many fascinating little details about Tommy that they left out of the movie since there is simply not enough time to add extra backstory about Tommy while focusing on the main story of The Room's production. The book paints a much better picture about what Tommy is like as a person. I was slightly disappointed by this movie because I love the book so much :)

Well if the recreations of scenes are in the context of watching them be filmed, as it looks from the clips you are showing, it wouldn't make sense to have them dubbed. A scene of them recording in post production is a missed opportunity for sure though.

Not having seen the movie I can't really comment too clearly on this, but the criticism that they recreated the scenes visually while messing up the audio sounds very odd. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the point being made, but considering the recreation of these scenes are in real time as they're being filmed there is no "dubbed" feel to recreate... Scenes are dubbed after the fact. Again, maybe I'm misunderstanding the point, but that criticism seems very off.

I think the cameos and the all-star cast were ways to get more people to see the movie, and, in turn, to check out The Room, so I see nothing wrong with them. True, they can sometimes be distracting, but if that's the worst thing to happen in a movie, it ain't that bad!

What annoyed me was how they acted like Kyle Vogt stuck with the entire movie. They make no mention of him leaving and show him reminiscing with co-stars at the premiere like nothing happened. It's a known fact that Kyle quit production before the movie was finished because he got another gig, which is why Peter was notably absent from the party (hence, the mysterious Steve). I don't see why they needed to leave that out.

I enjoyed the ending despite the inaccuracy. They pretty much compressed Wiseu's slow realization in a single moment, basically it's a sped up summary of what The Room has become over the years. It's fictionalized but I think it's pretty effective.

This handheld shit tells you that the movie misses the point of the source material in terms of direction. The story in the book is a grand story of aspiration to the noblest dreams. Two men, become frinds, sharing the idea that dreams are to be won, not to be unreachable. Therefore the cinematography should have been grand and glamorous, it should have looked like a timeless story, it should have been grandiouse.

I don't get some of the changes in the movie. For example, Greg Sestero's mom is a French lady, and is one of the first people to notice Tommy isn't really French. They cut out a hilarious bit in the book where she thinks Tommy is trying to have sex with Greg, so she embarassingly prohibits Tommy from doing so right in front of Greg. Of course, Tommy being Tommy, his dismissal of her concern also somewhat rings like disappointment that he was found out.
