Hands down the best tip on KZbin. I’m a lefty the was stuck around 350-375 ft on backhand. My buddy sent me this video and I went out to the field to give it a shot and instantly threw 420ft!! It takes some practice and I haven’t quite dialed it in but I can get it out over 400ft pretty consistently. Thanks for the tip I cannot wait to see how it changes my game once I dial it in.

Can confirm. I am a long time player, MA40 currently. I've been stuck for a long time. Sprained my right hand and switched to lefty a couple years back. Over this last off-season, I have been working on my lefty game, realizing I should have been lefty all along. My wife bought me a TechDisc for Christmas and I immediately discovered my issue. As a "new" player (with no bad habits baked into my lefty form) the TechDisc immediately showed the deficiency in spin between my left and right arms. My right has 20+ years of wear and tear. I can throw farther lefty for sure, as my speed is a full 10mph faster (60 mph). But the spin was less than 1000 rpms. My right hand hits around 1200 but is only 50mph. As someone who throws approx 370 lefty.... I feel like getting my spin rate to 1200 should get me over 400'. It's crazy since I can throw my Hex righty as far as my drivers because you don't need the speed to get the midrange to glide...just spin. I am glad this video reinforces what the raw data pointed out.

Yup indeed the greatest tip, my back hand is around 400-450 and feels like I can get more yet. I realized this early on from watching pros like Calvin and matty O. Coil the wrist heavily and remain coiled all the way through your reach back. Really generates a crazy amount of spins on the disk and makes it a lot easier to throw higher speed drivers. Amazing tip!!!

Thanks man. I am an old guy that really enjoys the game picking it up last fall. I have trouble with my shoulder as I have drilled holes for 42 years. I workout and I am fit but last fall trying to figure out how to throw, I really pulled my shoulder and still working on recovery. I keep believing and to some degree its true, that hand speed is a must. We know if you can move your hand at 65 instead of 55 the disc must leave faster. But as you note, and I watch Simon, and the ease and smoothness of his throws don't seem like he is throwing that hard particularly on an approach shot. You are not last to the party but I have been trying to incorporate "wrist flip" into my putts and throws but this was helpful as you described it - Thanks!

Hey, shoulder issues are super common when first starting out. This is caused by rounding 99% of the time. I did the same thing, in fact it got so bad I could barely lift up my arm. I fixed the issue (and added 200ft) by completely eliminating any sort of rounding. It just puts too much strain on the should joint but also kills speed. All of us had to fix it when starting out 👍

@pallew how did it go? This is where I am too. I average 280' but I can get up into 330' on ideal fairways with the right wind conditions. I've thrown farther on grip locks and crazy downhill fairways, but I don't count those. I am going to try this technique combined with recent improvements I added to my form including: "winning the arm wrestle", "the no look", and "throwing the elbow".

Yes and yes. I was able to finally break 450 with this technique. It’s hard to explain, but it feels like you’re turning a wheel in your power pocket. You know? And like you said, turn the disc around you. That’s where the disc spins very fast. Like you wanna spin the disc very fast and whip all at once. The timing needs to be impeccable but once you get it, ooooh baby.

It is certainly true that we often neglect "spinning the disc" on release. Personally I play 90% of my rounds on wooded courses so it is quite natural for me to finish my throws with more emphasis on control and this tends to stay in my form when im throwing for distance in the open as well. In your case I think the next step would be getting the weightshift to trigger your "pull" as you are currently throwing more off the back leg and weightshifting midswing so the shift and brace "hit" coincides. If you instead plant and weightshift to trigger the pull your body has time to "switch sides" from left to right in terms of which part of your core becomes the "center" for your stability. This also allows the left leg to function better as the counterweight for your posturecontrol much like a kangaroos tail does as long as you "bring the leg with you" by dropping the knee and turning the foot/knee/hip in, the major change there would be that the "legdrive" is not so much against the ground but rather against the stored momentum of the leg itself after the weightshift. I think Gurthie is probably one of the better examples of throwing power from a seemingly "passive" left leg that is instead employed as a counterweight but most people may need to bring the knee further forward to account for lesser hipmobility. In my not so humble opinion the key to his power from the legs there is partly the downward motion caused by his "brinster hop" so he can work with a lot more downforce on both his brace and his counterweight compared to x-stepping flat without dropping his hips. In any case a more "counterweighted" or "stable" stance is what you need to get the swing to assist you in spinning that disc around by using the wrist-disc distance as the final lever in your "throwing arm"... we tend to focus more on spine-shoulder, shoulder-elbow and also somewhat on the elbow-hand levers but wrist-disc is essentially a 4th lever of extension that is important in "cracking the whip". I think Drew Gibson is also a really good example of a player using all levers and he almost exaggerates it in his distance throws where you see him pull the disc 20 degrees right of what would be a "control" throw.

I’m still getting ah-ha moments today. My max distance I’ve ever thrown is around 460 but I wasn’t able to throw over 420 consistently until I watched Ricky Wysocki throw in a recent event. I noticed how he curls his hand so far back to get lots of spin so I tried it and it worked a little but it was painful and I was burning over too many shots. But I also watched a KZbin short that showed the difference between a pro player and an amateur players form. They both moved at the same speed but the pro player looked all the way back at his disc on his reach back which allowed him to move his hips more so I combined the 2 and threw very well better more consistent and straight shots.

@@antoniokehoe2363 well all my discs go around the same distance. I can sidearm putters around 220 and sidearm the heat around 250-280. @antoniokehoe2363
@antoniokehoe2363 7 ай бұрын
@@OneFocusPhotos Ah ok. I'm sure you've been told before but do you ever really throw any mids? If you're getting roughly the same distance (or only slightly more) with the fast discs it's best to just throw those putters and mids. Those will really show you what you may be doing. Something that really helped me start to get the nose down better was holding the disc (for backhands) in what some call a brief case position. So if you're holding the disc you are holding by the rim like usual but the top of the disc would be facing your body and the disc is straight up and down. As you are "pulling through" for lack of better term your arm will naturally try and flatten this out and help bring the nose down. Maybe give that a try. It helped me a lot to get the feel of it and as I started doing that I no longer briefcase because I understand the feeling
@OneFocusPhotos
@OneFocusPhotos 7 ай бұрын
@@antoniokehoe2363 funny enough just saw a video a couple mins ago about the brief case. Seemed like it would help a ton. I've only thrown nose down once ever. It shot off so fast. Right now I only throw putters and drivers since mids go the same as putters for me. I'm hoping soon my discs go all different distances. I literally throw like 3 or 4 different discs tops all round.
@antoniokehoe2363
@antoniokehoe2363 7 ай бұрын
@@OneFocusPhotos Awesome, definitely give it a try! It helped a ton for me and really try to engage the hips. Again I'm sure this is all stuff you've heard before. Honestly, if I could go back and start all over I would have only thrown mids and putters. If you're only getting maybe 30 or so feet more with a driver I honestly wouldn't throw them. Of course I have no idea how they fly for you but if it was anything like me, it taught me bad habits to force the disc to do things it may not necessarily be intended to do. For instance I would throw drivers from the start and because I couldn't get them up to speed I would throw them on a good amount of anhyzer to force it to flex and get more distance. This of course created bad habits. I hope you don't take it as I'm telling you what to do, just offering some advice that helped me and might do the same for someone else! Keep chuckin that plastic and you will get there I guarantee

Haha I went back just to see that I did that. Good Catch. You would hate to hear me pronounce "milk" or "creek"

Just finished watching a bunch of videos on rounding and then the first thing this guy says is "your hand moving aROUND the disc" 🤦‍♂️
@hotbeefdiscgolf

Two very different things. Rounding refers to the path the disc is traveling, as in the disc is being pulled around the body and not in a straight line. pulling the disc in a straight line while moving your hand around it like a steering wheel is the advice I am giving.

Yeah pretty sure most everyone knew this but very good video. The last thing I needed to increase distance that I was stuck at was throwing my left side around. I always focused on my throwing arm and could only get 300 or a bit more. Once I started focusing on power pocket, coil, plant and then throw my left side around fast as I could then the 400s and 450s came.👍🏻🥏
