I have a problem with the comment at the museum of The Jewish Deli in Los Angeles that salmon was not native to Poland, so therefore, the smoked salmon bagel was an American creation, is ignoring the geography and traditional foods of the Baltic region, where smoked salmon has been eaten and served for generations across Baltic and Scandinavian households and restaurants, just across the water from Poland, throughout Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway Estonia, Latvia, and Russia. It’s an incredibly common food in the Baltic countries and Eastern Europe and was not an American contribution in the world of the Jewish deli, but comes from the region the people came from in the Jewish diaspora throughout this region.

Most of the old-time delis have closed a long time ago and the ones that opened don't have so many great food items on offer. One can find everything at Zabar's, not just bagels and lox.

note- while there are no salmon in modern inland poland, they do appear in the Baltic sea which poland borders. additionally, trout is native to poland and is very similar to salmon. it could be this was adopted as the more popular, cheap fish.

In this video he talks about ZABARS on 79th and broadway,on the upper west side of Manhattan and I have been there several times and it's the only gourmet supermarket in the area and I used to work in the area 2 places in fact,but if you go upstairs you can find kitchen tools and machines downstairs is the fruit and vegetables section, they have a pastry section, coffee section, smoked seafood section and next door they have a little cafe,but in the area very few restaurants, cafes,basically nothing, but there's money in the area and you wouldn't know it,a lot of professionals doctors, lawyers, you name it, its their.
