I had an interesting idea regarding leshens. Maybe they didnt come from another sphere but instead evolved as a sort of defence system for forests where high amounts of magic arrived and were under threat from humans. They dont seem to do anything but defend the forest from intruders and their appearance and behaviour seems almost designed to be creepy and intimitating to humans which deters them from invading.
@FolkWalkCZ Жыл бұрын
That's essentially how it is in Slavic culture. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leshy
@QuandariusHuzz-bq1jn Жыл бұрын
Well in the witcher 3 they are reffered to as "fiercely territorial"
@madmanarrivednow8 ай бұрын
In the case of Leshen or leshi, we can't really talk about convergent evolution. The way I see it, a Leshen and it's "cousin" the Spriggan is the same thing. Sentient arcana. Mages were able to use arcana to emulate it in elemental golems. Spriggans are less violent only because they share their territory with an equally strong breed: the vampires. Toussant is (and this may or may not sound as a conspiracy theory) a feeding ground for them, but that's another story. Good catch, that the leshen are a defense system of the forest, but then again, spriggans are a type of a leshen and those can be mostly found in caves. So I am still sticking to the sentient arcana theory. It assembles a body for itself from barks, wood, bones etc. The resources you get from them prove it: timber, mutagens, resin, bones. It actually collects stuff for itself to look as uncanny as possible for the human eye. Spriggans use most likely corpses of dwarfs. If we reached a more modern, post industrial era in the Witcher universe, it would be possible that a suburban leshen would use plastic mannequins, suits, or would mimic the suit and tie composition in it's mimicry, and those would be more aggressive.
A small corection about the conjuction of spheres: The event didn't bring these creatures to the world of humans. The world of the witcher was originaly inhavitaded by the elder races like the elves, dwarves, etc. But when the conjuction happend many monsters from diferent worlds were transported there, including humans.

A pretty big correction

Didn’t gigantopithicus come from south east Asia? That would be difficult to explain, the Pacific Northwest is pretty far. Maybe Bigfoot is an offshoot of a human species?

I like how in a way, the world of The Witcher pretty much involves dozens if not thousands of invasive species being introduced to a single world, outcompeting each other and other creatures and adapting to the world at a kind of slow and chaotic way, it's why everything is so damned hostile to each other. humans for example conquered the world and outgrew the elves and dwarves.

Keep in mind the only reason the story states that our world was at the center of the conjunction is said to be a claim given by humans for an excuse of supremacy over the non humans. According to the Elves, Driades, and other ancient non human beings it wasn't the human's world that was at the center of the conjunction and forever changed, but their world. Humans where one of the many alien creatures dropped in the world of Chaos and Magic we see in the stories. Humans are said to seem to have adapted better to the changes since the change was so dramatic for them while other non human species didn't have to adapt for survival in a world of magic and beasts as much as humans did and where usually the teachers humans learned survival methods from for the world they were now living in.
