Hey, I grew up in Palm Harbor FL, There was a bottomless spring called the Blue Sink. The other end of the spring ends up in the Gulf of Mexico, hence (bottomless). I have personally witness 2 deaths at this spring in the early 80's. They went down and never came back up due to the silt and nitrogen narcosis in the labyrinth of caves. If you could dig up some interesting things about the Blue sink, I would be delighted and I'm sure your viewers would enjoy it. I can't seem to find a lot of information about the deaths that have occurred there.

I camp right outside the devils eye spring every October for 4 days. I love waking up on cold mornings and seeing the mist over the water. Its a really nice place to camp on the off season when not many people are camping there. Dont ever go on any holiday though it's insane and way too crowded. Love that the new owners are inforcing proper rules to protect the area and help make it enjoyable for everyone. It used to be a free for all pretty much and people can be so disrespectful to other campers and nature itself.

Ginnie Springs is pronounced like Jenny. Local here. I did my very first free-dive at Ginnie, at 13 years old. Dad didn't tell me he was proud of me too often, but he nearly walked on water that day. Dad started free-diving in the 70's, and was shocked when I told him I wanted to get my PADI cert. Me and the old man didn't even like each other most days, but diving was the one place and time where I actually felt close to the sumbich. He passed over 25 years ago. Never got to see me do my first technical dive, or see me break 100 meters on a free-dive, but I could still feel him with me down there. Bubbles up, pops. RIP, you cranky turd.

I was there in August of '86 with some high school friends. On our last day, an older man came up to us in his pick-up truck and dog. He asked if we had seen 3 young men who happened to be his sons. We said no and thought nothing of it. The next morning we left and, on the way home, heard the news on the radio that those 3 brothers drowned. I'll never forget that old man.

I was at UF when that happened. My friends and I would go caving in the surrounding area but never did any diving as none of us were scuba guys. My brother-in-law has dived; I don't know which caves though. He wants to start up again but my sister-in-law is not having it since they have three kids.

Ginnie Springs is a pretty popular party camp site in Florida. I had been there several times before I ever knew about the cave diving. The water really is as clear as they say. When you stand looking down at the entrance, its insanely disorientating. You don't realize how large or deep the cave is until you see someone swimming in it. They put the Grim Reaper sign out on the deck after the death in 2013. Scuba diving was banned for a while afterwards.

Yeah there were two separate murders on single night there earlier this year. Just hanging out there after dark is very dangerous. The first time i pulled up there in college there was a knife fight going down in the parking lot.

Combine that with the fact it's close to Gainesville, that has the highest crime rate per capita in the nation, a high popularity, increasing chances of something happening, and Florida's overall ability to attract weirdness, I'd say a knife fight seems on track.

And I did find that there is apparently a significant increase in homicides in recent years. I guess the biggest factor is that when I heard the knife fight story, I was not really surprised. Even in the video, people were still carrying on like normal when there was a dead body of someone they knew. If that does not describe the level of apathy people around there have, I don't know what does

Going to the gym, you can die there as well, thats an unnecessary risk for sure... You are way safer to not do it. But god, what a boring life you would live. I would say Steve going alone cave diving is a unnecessary risk. As it just exponentially increases the danger. Probably around 10 times more likely to die. (just remember the chance of dying generally diving is EXTREMELY low)

Devil's is a rather HUGE cave. There are tunnels that a semitruck can pass through, others as wide as a two lane road. There are tiny sections like Fluffy Bunny but a vast majority of the cave is huge.

As a Gainesville native, I dove in a couple of the springs in Ginnie, but I never went deep. Nowadays, Ginnie Springs' campground is probably more dangerous than the cave systems that surround it. Unfortunately, it's become the "party central" in the area. Like, every other year, someone dies from getting hit by a truck, fall out of a truck, drown, etc. Ginnie Springs' owners have a reputation of not allowing EMT or police to come onto the private property. Which only exacerbates the problem.

More people die each year frying turkeys, than they do cave diving. More people die during the holidays, due to stress, than do in cave dives every year. I've been cave diving for over 20 years, and been driving for over 30. I've never been in a cave diving accident, my fault or otherwise. I've been in three car accidents, all of which were me getting hot by someone else. Merely being around people is more dangerous than cave diving. I'll stick with my tanks and fins. Thanks.

I'm a native Floridian. I've been to Ginnie Springs many times. I've snorkeled in just about every major spring in Florida. For the life of me, I don't understand why these people feel the need to dive in these caves. They've already been thoroughly explored, so there's nothing new for them to see, and the risk of death is extreme. I feel bad for the families of the dead, but I have zero sympathy for the risk-takers who pay the price.

My husband's uncle was a long time commercial diver. Deep sea, rigs, you name it. Loved his job, retired from the field and worked desk side for decades. Suddenly got sick with an exceedingly rare form of cancer, only 12 known cases. Split him open sternum to pelvis, flushing liquid chemotherapy inside and out, removing any tumors and impacted organs and tissue. Survived that only to suffer back to back strokes and now on hospice care. Cause confirmed to be a form of mesothelioma directly caused by some aspect of his past job as a diver and in active litigation to get their hundreds of thousands of dollars in bills now covered. Can only hope that no one suffers something similar down the line.

i know this'll probably get drowned out by the comments, but i thought i'd share this i'm actually related to someone who works at the park itself. there's a reason why visitors, especially divers, are required to sign contracts. the amounts of deaths that have happened in ginnie are genuinely insane, and a lot aren't even from the devil's eye/system itself. some aren't even water related. some of those deaths aren't even public record, either. needless to say, please don't bring your family to the park. it's a party spring, not a vacation spot, your safety is not guaranteed whatsoever.

The reason visitors sign release forms has nothing to do with the danger. It's just an insurance requirement I have to sign a liability release form to dive in the pool at my local dive shop, because insurance requires it despite it being a regular swimming pool

The cave system here is beautiful. Massive rooms, crystal clear water, the high flow is tedious, but it's a great dive site. It's also a great place for underwater photography, the water is so clear inside the caves, it makes it easy to light them up and get some cool photos. Like anything else... get training before doing anything dangerous. It's a fun cave!

Been to the “The Devils Den” spring location. (Just snorkeling). Freeezing without gear in the cave but sooo beautiful. Even had little fishies in the cave. I could see some divers and the reaper sign down below. It’s worth a visit even if it’s just to float around up top. Water glows iridescent blue. I liked that the owners didn’t let the cave get too packed, swimmers just stayed as long as they could stand the cold and switched out but we weren’t rushed or anything. There’s a long staircase entrance that goes right down to the water with a hole in the center cave ceiling. Sun shining down was breathtaking.

@@sagrawolf Pure oxygen is frequently used as a decompression gas. Hence why the tank was marked MOD 20, which indicates pure oxygen. Likely he asked for an air fill, but the one who filled it saw the markings and accidentally filled it with pure oxygen instead. The diver then failed to check his air, leading to the mistaken belief that it was surface air. It is 100% the fault of the divers. Divers must check nitrox marked tanks on every dive. The dive buddy should have checked the air as well

The rescuers are almost always people that do cave exploring, cave diving and the likes. So they do have empathy and compassion for the people, they know next time it could be one of them. Many times volunteers even come. They aren’t even on a payroll and will still take the risk because they love their hobby. Hope you can find a community like that, where people are emphatic and compassionate with each other and do not think so selfishly!

Appreciate there being no AI in this video. I know with how easy it is for huge channels to knock out videos frequently and KZbin seeming to reward that over slower but more valuable content, it makes it tempting, if not sometimes unavoidable, to use AI, but I really appreciate the effort that goes into people either doing it themselves or giving work to real people who put that effort into it. Love this channel but that was really nice to see. I always like the transparency you have about AI use in your videos too, compared to other channels. Great video, I enjoy the different kinds of disasters you make videos of but I think the diving ones are my favourite (although special mention to the Arctic/Antarctic expeditions).

I went there with my Boy Scout Troop in my youth in the early 1990's. The no lights rule was definitely in effect, and I seem to recall Devil's Ear not only had the Grim Reaper signs posted, but was also barred off to prevent any entry. Both the Grand Ballroom and Devil's Eye were significantly deep at around 70+ feet (21+ meters) in depth preventing anyone without SCUBA gear from attempting to enter the caves. We got briefed daily during our visits there to avoid entering the caves, as the clarity of the water made judging depths very deceptive. As I recall, the Santa Fe River was very silty and muddy, but the water coming out of the springs in the Ginnie Springs complex as absolutely crystal clear.

There is nearly zero tolerance for mistakes in cave diving. I did the Devils eye to Devils ear run where we had to remove our tanks to fit through a passage. This was in the early 70s before a park or any rules.

I visit this park, Ginnie (Jenny) springs, all of the time as I live in Jax. I free dive all of the time here, within the visible light. Absolutely incredible. Free diving to the bottom of little Devil, and looking back up to the world above is something else. I've seen the scuba divers down deep with their flashlights, and I've seen them looking at the reaper sign. It's so sad what kind of place this gorgeous natural location has turned into, it's an absolute party mess. Had a guy on mushrooms stumble into my camp covered in blood trying to hide from the cops who were searching for him visibly a few campsites away.
