The Disused Dearne Valley Railway Part 2 starting from Conisbrough Viaduct, past Cadeby Main Colliery, Denaby Ings to Harlington.
Introduction is from in front of the Cadeby tunnel on the Hull & Barnsley Railway South Yorkshire Junction railway. Where our Dearne Valley Railway sweeps over the top on the entrance to Cadeby Main Colliery near Conisbrough.
The line opened in 1909 and connected Black Car junction with Brierley Junction near Barnsley. Passenger trains ran between Edlington and Wakefield, a railmotor car ran by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway.
We pick up our trackbed on top of the Conisbrough Viaduct, now part of the cycle network and we can follow the trackbed for around a mile until the route of the line disappears. The viaduct consists of 21 arches and one lattice girder span over the river. Made of red brick with a blue brick outer layer, it measures 465m long and contains 12million bricks.
Cadeby Main colliery was first sunk in 1889 and lasted for just shy of a hundred years until 1986. As always sadly seems to be the case with every colliery I pass on my travels. Cadeby Main suffered it’s own disaster in 1912 where 35 miners died in an explosion. A further 53 were killed during the rescue and the total loss of life was a heartbreaking 91.
As we enter Denaby Ings nature reserve, we can pick up the alignment again near the former Denaby Halt station. Or Denaby for Conisbrough and Mexbrough as it was known.
The line continued over the marshlands and arrived at Harlington, the former Harlington Halt is long gone. The railway embankment and bridge now demolished.

I worked with a guy in the mid 80s, who worked in Cadeby Pit, he told me that after the rescue team went in and the subsequent fire they had to brick up the up the roadway, and when he finished post strike, it was still hot from the fire burning. There's a memorial in Conisborough to the people killed.

It was a stomping ground of mine, the old dearne ran to the Cadeby side of the line into the ings with the "new" cut to the Mexborough side, i remember the bridge over pastures road before they took it down. There was a coal tippler on the side of the Don near where the Dearne met it to fill coal butties for transhipment down to the coast where the full buttie was lifted out of the water to empty it. The headgear for Denaby was still there up to the early eighties probably kept as an emergency/air shaft (all the pits where filled in post strike it was all the regeneration we got or rather a message they were not coming back), and there was a large mine tub works at Cadeby/Denaby. One thing puzzles me, your google earth shot shows a brick works at Cadeby, which when i was young was settling ponds for mine slurry, a large dangerous looking place.

First came across this spot in Feb 1993. At that time, it wasn't infilled at the tunnel, but there was alot of rubble around from the bridge abutments. Got infilled in the mid 90s, as an access road to the Earth center, which is when it all got tarmacked through the angled bridge bit.

👍I can remember them building the earth centre. Wish I could remember what it was like, or taken some photos before it all changed.

Ings normally denotes land by a river that floods ( flood plain)

every time i walk past that old telegraph pole i always wonder what its for, same with those abutments, i also had no idea you could get to that flood barrier, i have always seen it from the TPT, and wondered what it was

Thanks for taking us along, enjoyed the ride. I spend my time exploring the old lines of the East Riding, sometimes finding a sleeper is the highlight of the day!

Plenty of concrete sleepers but not quite the amount there is on Google maps 😄 I wonder why they got rid of most but still left quite a few. Definitely looks better weather than when I was there 😂

I wondered too where they all went. Wonder if they're just overgrown now as there were a lot more than I filmed here. Or did they use them for fencing and that.

Really interesting, I’m enjoying all of your videos! Have you done one (or could you consider) disused lines around Silverwood pit / Ravenfield / Thrybergh / Kilnhurst / Dalton down to the river Don?

Cheers Andy 👍 glad you're enjoying them. Was actually on my way down to silverwood a few months ago, but ended up going to Barnsley instead. Hopefully get back at some stage.

Really interesting video Paul. I'm not sure why those concrete sleepers are around they are too modern for the DVR. Amazing how much railway was round there, love that picture of the tunnel when was that taken. I was in Donny yesterday for the model railway exhibition , on the way home in noticed where the bridge went over the A1. I don't think that was the bridge I mentioned in a comment on part one. That's got me thinking though about where was there another railway bridge in that area over the A1 that was demolished. The one I was thinking about had three or four spans and was blue plate girders

I think the sleepers were from the line in use to the quarry later on? I get confused what was opened and closed in that section 😄 You're not thinking of the bridge over the Don are you?

I was thinking of those sleepers at the start of the video, the one with the painted marker looks like it's not long been taken up. It is confusing round there when lines closed as some seem to have been joined with other railways and all kinds of stuff. All very interesting, when was the picture of the tunnel taken? The exhibition was really good was busy at first but thinned out about 2. I've sent you some pictures of wagons I bought

@@maestromanification got em ;) I honestly can't remember the year. I think early 70s Roger said the photo was. I think the tunnel was still being used for some of the quarry trains from then.
