I am Dr. Yvonne S. Thornton, M.D., M.P.H., Sc.D.(hon), FACOG, FACS, one of "The Ditchdigger's Daughters". I am thrilled that so many have viewed the movie and have finally found it after so many years. Those who want the entire story of my parents and my sisters should read the award-winning original BOOK (by the same name) upon which this movie was based. The TV-movie only covers about 10% of the book. If you want the full inspirational story, the book is the best way to go. I wish you well and have a wonderful day!! Keep dreaming, keep studying, keep focusing.

From the tenements of East Harlem to the lofty towers of an Ivy League medical school, this story is about attaining the American dream for me and my sisters (thanks to my determined parents). The book of the same name is more comprehensive, if you wish to read it.

He dedicated his whole life to ensuring that his daughters succeeded at a time in this country when it was very rare for women to become doctors and unheard of for a black woman to be a doctor or lawyer. He may have seemed harsh on the surface but this was a man who dearly loved his children and would stop at nothing to make sure that they succeeded. Their success opened the door for other black women. A beautiful story. Thank you for uploading.

Good afternoon, Ms. Owenby: Thank you for your kind sentiments. You're right, my Dad was protective and demanding. But, he had to be given what the world was like for dark-skinned Black women. Dear Rockchick128: I don't understand how you can criticize my Dad based on a movie. "He went about it the wrong way?" I don't know what that means back in the 1950s and 1960s when 50% of black girls in our neighborhood were pregnant by the age of 15. He loved us, he stayed with us, he protected us and he guided us with his wisdom to become independent, successful and accomplished women. If that is the wrong way, then I'm glad he was "wrong". Michael Anthony Trapp I watched this film for the first time tonight, and I can understand why you searched to re-watch it for 18 years. It was so inspiring and speaks to many areas of the psychological issues of the self fulfilling prophecy of the black woman. I wish I had a father like him.

Dr. Thorton: To say I am enjoying this movie is putting it mildly. Your father was a hero. He knew what needed to be done. No nonsense for him. He raised all of you beautifully, along with your mom. Today's kids think they know it all, have it all and want more. All they know is facebook, social media, instagram, selfies. They know nothing about hard work. I was raised in the 60's. I went to work when I was 13. I just wonder out loud what is to become of this younger generation who at the age of 2 know abut Ipads and Iphones. They can't even write properly, let alone spell a word. Anyway, your story inspires me. Thanks so much.

Making great sacrifices so your children can have a better chance in life to succeed is a wonderful deed indeed. To live out your dreams through your children is the flip side. In my opiniin, he was way too harsh with Jeanette, he was unforgiving and bitter towards her. We only have one life to live, our paths, our goals and success should not be dictated by another, only guided. True success is measured by one's happiness. I told my children to follow their passion because one can only truly be happy and succeed when one loves what they're doing. My 7yr old said "so I can work at a check-out at the store?" to which my eldest replied "sure, as long as you not only own the store but mall too!" Now that's what I like....you go girls! Whatever makes you happy! ♥

Perhaps they were then. Until the late 50s, the only decent options for white women were shop girls, waitress, nurse, secretary or teacher. They expected to quit these jobs once they married. You were not allowed to go to nursing school if you were married. Before the 50s things were even worse. No job, no power over your own life. It was nearly impossible for the ordinary woman to leave a bad marriage. Going further back only shows more limits, barely educated and if a woman ran away from a bad marriage she could be hunted and returned to the husband as his property. The women's movement and right to vote, just as the civil rights movement were inevitable. ~I applaud the Doctor's father. The job of a parent is to provide the opportunity to their children to be the best they can and to be able to carry on when the parents are gone. ~~My opinions and many might disagree but that's ok :)

Wow, props to Mr. and Mrs. Thornton. Mr. Thornton's focus and dermination were astounding. Very few people in Harlem understood at the time that the neighbourhood had indeed changed, and that the negative changes would intensify. He may have been hard in some of his approaches, but it took that and then some to be utterly dedicated to his daughters' futures. His neighbours in Harlem who weren't anywhere near as vigilant with their children ended up with descendants in the 3rd, 4th and 5th generations residing in housing projects and becoming grandmothers at age 35.

I decided to watch this on another internet platform where the picture quality was better. Any movie based on true events that brings tears to my eyes at some point in the story is one worth watching, and that's not easy to do for me given my own past. This movie broke through my emotional barriers and triggered that emotion, and left me feeling that I am not alone in my struggles. thank you

Hi Dr. Thornton, I came across your movie while searching for something to watch. I never regret clicking on it. I never like watching black movies as I get very angry about the way black people were treated. This movie about your family was different it show a different take on the black people. I admire your father and how he wanted to change things for you all. I wish my father cared a little percent as he did. He never asked to see our books, he never paid for external exams, he never send any of us any further then high school. I leave high school at 18 and I had to get a job. I wasn't able to go to university until I was in my late 30 when I was able to afford it, but I did it . I made a promise that when I had a child I will do everything in my powers to see to it that she do well in school and also go to university right after high school and she did and I am so very proud of her. I am proud of you and your sisters too. Your mother was a humble soul. You all had a hero for a dad, there will never be another like him in this life time.

"The Ditchdigger's Daughters" was something I didn't expect Pat Robertson's network (then called The Family Channel, but now, of course, called ABC Family) to even have the guts to put on the air. But I'm glad the network DID air it. Great, great movie...thanks for posting it, Ressie!

The story of my family was the first cable tv movie that heralded the transition of Christian network to a secular format (The Family Channel). It WAS very difficult to have it filmed and broadcast. But, nothing is impossible. I'm glad you liked the movie. The book of the same name is even better. Happy Holidays! Best, Dr. Thornton

Wow! I Loved, the entirety of such a beautiful true story.... Their Father reminded me so much, of my father who, served in Vietnam and also worked as a Longshoremen at the port of Lake Charles to take care of his 5 girl's & 2 boy's and our beautiful mother was a house wife. He also built, our house next to his father's home and the widows we're to high to jump... Their sister was much bolder than I.... It was no way I would say anything back, where as my daddy hear me... I was his Lawyer.... I literally cried, towards the end when one of the older sisters came home for her mother's service and told her father she was going to be a doctor, in hopes that would make him smile....

It's a damn shame when the mother of a son doesn't want to help him take care of her own grandchildren especially when he is being the best father he can be and working 2 to 3 jobs... Shit don't make no sense. Besides I'm so grateful that he took the other child in as well cause she was being treated like the wicked step sister or something... God is so good.

A movie of such excellence. All the actors were great. Yet watched this with my ex. We loved it as it portrayed. Such a wonderful story of family, grit & success. We can get so far in life with cooperation. When it is challenged or questioned. See how many it breaks. Like a chain reaction. The beautiful mother got sick from a broken heart. Then the father was lost without her. He felt empty without his wife & daughters. I love the characters of all the girls. He was protective, strict and cared. He gave them structure & a strong foundation. Of discipline, & guidance that created their obedience. The mother stuck by her husband. She was his soft, regal pillar of strength. If we had more of this today. Just where would so many of is be? Blessed are these daughters. Of a man with a plan & a dream. Who never lost hope & a mother who never lost faith. Now that's the dynamic of a true dream team! Thank You for uploading.
