Datto, I love these theory crafting videos. The biggest reason I subscribed to you was that your videos have always been very informative and accurate. It sucks that you wasted a lot of time, but maybe with some additional work, you could zero in on the correct ratio for critical hits.

man dont get discouraged. despite the fact that i was looking forward to a solid answer, i found this video helpful because it just went to show that my own speculations were true. I am a math major and i deal with numbers theories and ratios all day for the passed 10 years or so. That means i always knew or had a feeling that crit chance and crit damage will have a golden ratio but its affected by other so called hidden variables. Those hidden variables being talents, skills, attribute, gear pieces and mods, weapon and their attachment. Massive truly made a very complicated system were it makes it really hard for people to simply find that positive vector of improvement and exploit it. with all that said, cant you just come up with a confidence interval based on your overall character stats? say no matter what you have, navigate to your character tab, scroll down to your overall crit chance/damage and get a nice linear model of whats being utilized the most. right now i believe i am sitting at 50%chance and 120%damage. just based on those numbers, my inner mathematician wants to pack more damage in place of losing some chance. i rather do 150% (that is one and a half times) more damage even if it meant for my shots to be slightly less often than every other shot (50%). it becomes a linear programming model with two variables and two boundaries. let X=chance, let Y=damage. maximize Z=(X).(Y). your objective function is z and you are trying to maximize the objective function of two variables. im not sure about the boundary conditions at this point.

I appreciate the attempt; I was scratching my head about this for hours yesterday. I kept trying to see visually how much damage output I was putting out and whatnot at the shooting range and couldn't for the life of me figure it out. So I tried doing it the math way and pulled out my calculator and just ended up stumping myself more about the whole thing. Glad to see someone else also struggling to figure the perfect ratio out. For now, I'm just trying to evenly balance the two because I have self preserved on my vector (3% heal every crit) and my build is almost entirely based around it (low-medium health, high armor, high dps, low skill power). The higher my crit chance, the quicker I'm healing. The higher my crit damage, the more I'm healing. My happy medium so far is about 40-45% crit chance and the rest goes to crit damage. Meaning almost every other bullet, I'll heal. If it was truly every other bullet, it'd probably work out better but I'd be doing less dps more than likely. I'd also survive for longer.

+Datto these theory crafting videos are actually really helpful regardless of how accurate they are. You spend a lot of time speculating and theorizing on things which saves your viewers a lot of the time doing the same thing. I appreciate the effort on this one. I've resigned myself to avoiding the theory crafting, min/max of The Division. I have some weapons with higher DPS than others, but they simply aren't as effective due to the huge number of visible stats in combination with some other more mysterious ones - Range, Accuracy, Initial Bullet Accuracy, and so on... Good work on the vids though. As much as I enjoy the math of it all, I've resigned myself to just slapping stuff on and seeing how it works in practical use as opposed to crunching the numbers to determine a theoretically optimal build. Maybe I'm playing it wrong though.

Also crit chance has a cap of 60% or so, just like with armor mitigation. So if you're using pulse with a good amount of skill power you can lower your crit chance and stack more crit damage and make up the loss of chance with pulse.
@Kestral2878 жыл бұрын
I certainly wouldn't call you a failure when you addressed the key to it in the first two minutes of the video. "Don't stack them because diminishing returns are a thing" is really the most salient point you could make on this subject, and teaching people what the equation is (and it's really not a hard equation to do, so most everybody can get value from learning it) and what its limitations are is pretty much all anyone could ask for anyway. It's not the perfect answer but that doesn't make you a failure by any means.

@destiny4breakfast8158 жыл бұрын
Ya, this is one serious issue I have with the Division. They have made the numbers too complicated. The average player cannot make sense of how damage works and what to do in order to get it up. The average player base either gets confused and trusts the in-game DPS calculator to make decisions (which we know is flawed) or gives up entirely. I personally have been using the Pulse ratio as a baseline (3-3.5/1). I expect to have pulse up 80-95% during combat, so I add those bonuses to my damage. I adjust my base stats to keep my overall stats around 3-3.5/1. Additionally, we have to factor in variables that are and are not being picked up by the base stats in the character screen. For instance, the Midas has 13% crit chance while full health which is being picked up on the character screen, whereas my gloves have 13% crit chance (I think it means to targets out of cover) are not. I love your theory crafting videos. Could you possibly do one on the gloves that give 13% crit chance? Is the crit chance given to enemies out of cover or when you are out of cover? Or maybe a video that address the crit chance cap? I hear the crit chance cap is 60%... Does that stack with Pulse? Or any other benefit from items? You could also explain to people what scavenging does. I have had to explain it to many times to people. Scavenging doesn't improve the amount of your drops. It improves the quality of the drops, but if the high quality items are not in the loot table, then it doesn't matter what your scavenging is, you will not get high quality items. Anyways. Thanks Datto and keep up the good work!
@drkrac8 жыл бұрын
Not sure if someone else has already said this in the comments but here goes. Damage is a function of both crit chance % and crit damage % and so you want to maximize both. There is no golden ratio. However when you are looking at an upgrade, then you need to be aware of what it is more worthwhile to put points into. The DPS calculator should do this for you, but if you want a basic explanation: If, at the time of upgrade, your ratio of critical damage to critical chance is "X" i.e. (critical damage %) / (critical chance %) = X then, a 1% increase in crit chance is the same as an X% increase in crit damage. Make of this what you will. Edit - of course the Division only reports the "additional damage dealt with a critical hit" so you need to add 100% to it to get your crit damage % as used above. Example: My character is currently at 21.5% crit chance and 25% additional crit damage. X = (100 +25) / 21.5 = 5.814. Therefore I would get the same out of a 1% increase in crit chance as a 5.814% increase in crit damage

Hey dude I care for this hang on it ;) I am an Diablo 3 beta player and still play it and I also play the division, it isn't easy but hey even when you know you don't have an correct answer you still help the people out there to understand how CC and CD works great job datto keep it going Sorry for my bad English xD Greetings doitordie
@derekspackman28528 жыл бұрын
honestly i feel that anyone that is trying to run a CC/CD build just needs to try it out for themselves, start with CC then one you get to a point where you feel your weapon is hitting crits as often as you feel it should, then move on to CD. that being said, talents on your weapon will change this thought process for some people, for example; Self-Preserved talents heals you for a percentage of crit hits. so in those cases(which there are a few) going with a slightly higher crit chance than you may need may be beneficial if your running a ST/EL tank build. so many options keeps this game viable.

Crit chance vs crit damage really just depends on the build. Its an issue Ive been around for years. In STO, a cruiser wanted more crit chance, while a DPS focused ship wanted crit damage. And when you have perks/skills that nearly garuntee a crit, the only thing that matters then is damage. Its really just a complicated mess. I think going off of per bullet damage would be the way to go, since a higher damage per bullet would want crit damage to hugely boost an already high damage, while a lower damage per bullet would want crit chance to make up for not having harder hitting rounds.

I came over to The Division from Destiny, and The Division is the first game were I am really getting in to stats (and there is a lot of them...). Have been curious about crit chance and crit damage, and the golden ratio of these, for a while.. One comment/question: wouldn't the golden ratio also be dependent on your weapon of choice? if you are landing many shots per second or just a few? SMG vs Sniper for instance?

Hey I have been working on something very similar. I think an easier way to look at this is to compare the slots where crit chance and crit damage compete against each other and other damage stats. Which is only the magazine and muzzle. All other sources are a damage vs defense comparison, and the answer to that is always: are you dying? If yes go for defense, if no for damage. I'd love to share with you my finds sometime if you're interested!
@527JonCody8 жыл бұрын
Basic dps in The Division I believe is regulated by white numbers. When I calculate my vectors 56% crit chance, 190% crit damage with 60% headshot damage, my theoretical TRUE dps is somewhere around 2.5 million per 25 rounds I release doing 100k damage a shot with no buffs; per second. In game my dps is 180k, which I calculated to be right with only white numbers (aka, weapon damage). Kind of wish they factored in the whole crit chance/damage into your dps, but I digress. Other factors are rolling godly on your weapons. Like my High-End Vector has Brutal (headshot damage), Deadly (crit damage) and another one that increases damage by 13% when within 10m, forgot the name. But these also play a factor. It's also aggrivating when the DPS stat on marksman riffles is low. This, again, only accounts for body shots and your clip size with your rate of fire. Completely discounts the crit/ crit damage/ headshot damage. Like, I have 5 rounds, but each round gets 1M headshot crits literally every shot, but only shows as 145k DPS, and I can fire 3 shots a second. Essentially, I'm saying that the DPS stat feels false from what you truly are dishing out, especially with that Talent that has a 50% chance to return a headshot round to the clip. Once had a 13 return streak going with my sniper, was super sexy.
@pigslayer2758 жыл бұрын
Wait, what about the headshot damage? That should have been an attribute mentioned.. Though, it is CC vs CD, so i should probably think more.. I'm just wondering this because of weapons like marksman rifles & assult rifles.
@DattoDoesDestiny8 жыл бұрын
+pigslayer275 It's difficult to put headshot damage into the equation because headshots aren't something that can be calculated easily. It all depends on player skill. If I could include more variables easily, I would, but this video was made to show JUST the relationship between crit chance and damage and nothing else. Headshots are part of the reason it is so hard to do a DPS simulation because headshot chance is a constantly changing number based on skill, positioning, etc.
@Serrovin8 жыл бұрын
+Datto I find the best way to test any gear I use or as i swap out pieces, is to go to the firing range in the basement of the Base of operations. The targets, as best I can tell, use your own stats as a place holder, ie. I'm level 30 with x armor rating and y dps/damage so I could average this much damage per shot and see how often I crit or what I get for damage drop off against the farther target, up close head shots etc etc. Makes for a good test but then "real world" action is varied, lower level enemies or high tier bosses.

+Datto SkillUp's DPS calculator www.divisiondps.com/; Gear cheat sheet: www.reddit.com/r/thedivision/comments/4asqe3/gearing_cheat_sheet/; CHC/CHD bonus on gear: www.reddit.com/r/thedivision/comments/4bran9/gear_optimization_the_list_of_items_with_critical/; On items that can roll both bonuses, the "rate" stays between a 4.8 (magazine) and 5.7 (gloves) CHD for each point of CHC. If you go and match the gear rolls you can achieve with 6 bonuses (gear + weapon mod + weapon talent) you'd see you can max at around 202% CHD and 43.5% CHC, which is 4.6% CHD every 1% of CHC. That brings us close to the "1 in 5" value that you also refined, but it sounds kinda high indeed.

E.g. someone using hawk moon...no one else can use hawk moon until the next encounter where veryone swaps.Effectively everyone is using a different primary ALL THE TIME. ADDITIONAL INFO: if anyone on your firetrap runs out of primary ammo that person is aloud to use a special or heavy hover cannot be OP. Swords and sidearms are a perfect t example. Stuff like this is why I'm really glad they added the shooting range. Just try different gear and mod combinations, see which gives you the highest numbers. Thanks for the effort though.

Hi Datoo, I have a crit chance currently between 30 and 37% (apologies I am at work), my crit damage is 130%. My firearms was at 3900+ and is now around 3400+, currently using a wreckless chest piece (13% plus damage) and my DPS and damage is even higher and this seems hidden and not reflected in the actually firearms stat which is now 3400 plus yet it seems to display in DPS, running at least 6 firearms mode, probably at least 4 above 140.Currently doing primary 88k plus headshot damage on the dummy in the BoO. My Vector has Brutal +23%, Responsive +13% damage, and Unforgiving, 10.5% 1st segment, 26% 2nd segment to my memoryMy M1A has had a DPS of 224k, not sure what it is now. I am still a level 31 holster and glove short and couple of gold attachments for both weapons. Also could use more than 1 slot on my chest piece. Damn those Div Techs.

Datto, have you experimented with Electronics builds for damage (sticky bomb, turret, smart ball bomb)? I have been wanting to know if it is usable, but at the moment I haven't reached a point where it feels that much useful. It's ok if its not viable, as I can still salvage my build as a medic or team buffer, but still I am interested in knowing if it can be done.

+FoxLift There are suddenly some videos about that build, the most important thing is to reduce the cooldowns of the bfb which is most easily done by healing allies with a skill and using triage for 15% cdr per heal which also reduces the allies' cdr as well, so a whole team healing each other instantly can heal or use any other skill again. Max dmg for bfb is 250.000 (or 300.000?) plus 40% from hitting multiple enemies plus 40% when you exploded an enemy in the last 15 seconds plus bomb dmg stats on your gear.
