My first ever full-fledged game "review" starts with The Division. How does it hold up? Can it survive as a long term experience? Is Destiny a true competitor to the game? Why am I mentioning Diablo 3 so much? Why is this review so long? Don't I have anything better to do on the weekends? Or am I strictly motivated by fear of my subscribers getting angry at me for not making videos?
Seriously though, I'm not a journalist, I don't think I have any business doing game reviews because I don't really know how to review games at all. This is my first attempt at anything of this caliber, so I apologize for anything that may be lacking in the review.
It took a while to do this review because I needed to experience all facets of the game. I think a first day review of this game is really stupid and to properly review this kind of game, much like Destiny, you needed to make sure you played every single little thing you could possibly do. For me, that was about 55-60 hours of play, a few hours of writing, comparing notes with my friends and other people who have been playing, reading other websites and finally actually putting the whole thing together. So...that's why it took so long. Sorry. If you could, please give your thoughts on the review itself, not necessarily my opinion on the game or anything like that. If there was something I should've talked about more or less, lemme know. I went a bit overboard with this one because I just wanted to cover every single thing, then in the future I can tone down things people don't care about.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, glad to hear that the review didn't suck. Of course as I wake up, there were a couple of other things I forgot to discuss, but I don't think it really impacted the review too much. Not used to this much positivity in the comments :)

+Datto Funny how right after you talk about being okay with shooting guys a lot, in the footage you shoot a guy in the genitals. Intentional editing or coincidental capture?

+Datto datto one thing that i will need to say is that its pretty difficult to keep ur focus level very high for a video with so much content in it. The summary at the end mostly fixed that problem but i think it would have been even better if u would have split this video in two- the beginning of the game and the end game. that way we can choose what to watch and it seems less stressful. thanks:) and keep doing great content. not one video of u has been not helpful

+Datto You keep referring to 'liking 3rd person shooters' but how does the shooting mechanics hold up against some of the others in this area - like Gears of War or Uncharted for example? How do the weapons feel? Good review but would be nice to see how certain aspects, particularly the 3rd person shooting in this case compares. Similar how you constantly refer to Diablo with regards to the RPG stats.

+Datto Nice work on the review Datto. I always appreciate longer reviews which take time to go more in depth as to why a reviewer thinks the way they do. One thing I would like to see from any other review you make is a division of the review content. In other words queue a slide for graphics, discuss, queue a slide for core game-play loop, discuss, etc. I know it can be tough to write a long script, especially if you are editing it multiple times, so thanks for the hard work.

What the division needs -pvp Customizable characters to look cool - unique exotics that take a certain way to obtain like the no time to explain quest - allow everything to have all stats so we can have crazy setups

Great review. Sums up The Division pretty well and quite succinctly, even at 20 minutes long. good to see you pointing out the Destiny and the Division are actually more different than they are similar. This game is definitely no Destiny killer, but a whole lot of fun to play in its own right.

imo this is one of the best reviews i have seen cause you go over all the more recognisable issues, the similaritys to games that someone might like, and you go into deeper details that are far more indepth into the game than most reviewers ever feel like they do.

Great review! I agree with everything you said. But it took me 2x as long to get to level 30, I was playing mostly solo, and sometimes the matchmaking would only put me with 1 person; who was 5 levels below the minimum recommended...

Well Done! I read and watch a lot of reviews, mostly for games I've already bought which might be weird? But I have to say I thought your's was excellent. I especially liked that your review was primarily informative and objective with subjectivity kept to a minimum. While I still value a reviewers personal opinion I strongly feel that subjective statements need to be clearly subjective and should not occupy the bulk of a review. I look forward to your next review.

This was great work, Datto. Personally, I enjoy hearing verbose in-depth thoughts about games. And I enjoy your delivery as well as the flow-of-consciousness, so it makes a good combo. If I were to recommend anything if this becomes a regular thing, perhaps make a TL;DW timestamp in your description for anyone who wants to hear your summary. Otherwise, well done!

Honestly datto I gotta say...This was probably the first time i've ever actually liked and agreed with your opinion. This is my most favorite review of the game. But I wanted to touch on a few things. Appologies if this becomes a long read. I believe the reason why destiny is compared to the division so much is because they are both loot based shooters and many people myself included loved the loot aspects being added into a shooting title. However destiny doesn't feel as rewarding or progressive in terms of loading out and fine tuning a build. Destiny lacks the depth of character creation that the division has. So again..it's not that destiny and the division are super similar. It's that of the few aspects they share the division gives us what we've truly been wanting out of destiny. Your crafting system gripe is interesting. Why would it need to be more detailed or complex? Also Division tech is kind of what you described. it's only for dark zone blueprints and can only be obtained from the DZ. I'm glad you're not like most popular youtube channels and complained about the lack of pvp in the DZ. I've written this so many times in the past week. But I'll state it in here incase you actually read and reply. I think certain steps should be taken to make pvp more often. But to be done in such a way that it doesn't become forced on others or become the optimal way to handle the DZ. I think the only possible way of doing this is by adding in random events. My 2 ideas were an uncontaminated drop from planes similar to dying light. this would refresh your supplies and contain some gear you could use on the spot. Players would fight over the rights to this drop. My other idea was adding in some kind of manhunt but with a pve enemy. The game would drop a random enemy in a random section of the DZ and players would be notified. He would drop more phoenix creds then average and have a higher chance to drop high end stuff. I also feel they can and should expand the dark zone with encounters or mini side missions that give us more detail to the people inside the dark zone. maybe even add a faction specific to just the DZ. As for going rogue I think they could bump up the EXP from surviving by some. and temp boost your scavenging stat. but nothing else needs to be done to it. I've always felt the rewards from going rogue was the feeling of surviving and any potential loot your victims drop. The punishment for dying as rogue needs to stay strong. otherwise players will just always fight. Lastly thanks for pointing out that nit picky thing at the end. I was wondering why I had to double reload often. Hopefully it does get fixed. anyway if you read thanks for doing so. keep up the division content!

+mongrelshadow14 for your comments on the DZ, I agree that people need to PvP more often, taking down other players is a LOT of fun, although I tend to avoid going rogue like the plague and take down people who do. I also hate that people try and make other people go rogue by purposefully walking into their line of fire as they try to shoot an elite enemy or boss, but that's just a personal gripe really. Random events idea would be cool but I don't think it would encourage PvP, seeing as if I put one shot into an enemy and another group kills him then I still get rewards and exp for that kill anyway, which I think is still fair or you'll never level up when other players not with you are around. And what would encourage more people to go rogue and thus get more PvP would be to reduce the penalty for going rogue and being killed (especially annoying when you don't mean to and some arsehole has decided he wanted to walk in front of you shooting a boss). You don't even get DZexp for going rogue and surviving, just credits and the sheer amount of everything you lose (the drops you had, the exp and the funds/keys) is just staggering and totally puts me off, I agree that maybe it needs to be strong otherwise the DZ will turn into a hot mess, but I do think it's ridiculous, if you just lost credits and maybe a few less keys for going rogue then maybe I'd be happy to do it more often I'm not even sure it just seems like a too much of a risk for little to no reward. With over 150k DZ funds I don't need my own bounty... Anyway, think more needs to be done for surviving rogue in my opinion. I get more satisfaction from killing a rogue than surviving it just saying ;)
@mongrelshadow14
@mongrelshadow14 9 жыл бұрын
+CLS14Jambo Reducing the exp loss for dying as a rogue by too much would make pvp happen more sure. But it would also make pvp a majority. Which isn't productive. I think the amount of EXP you lose should scale based upon how many people you killed. Or perhaps what level of rogue you are. My only worry there though is if the exp loss is minimal when you are just starting as a rogue that players might just start griefing others like crazy. The penalty has to be scary enough to make people think twice about shooting people at random. But the rewards got to be enticing enough to make players consider it. Even though I personally feel the potential loot the killed players drop should be enough of a reward most don't. So maybe surviving as a rogue gives you even more credits. Both normal and DZ. And then also increase their scavenging for a few minutes. It's really a delicate balance. It's true that in my special enemy example you'd get the exp for participating. and you'd have a right to claim the rewards. But they could easily make it so only one person can pick up the drops. Which would make people fight over them. I suppose for the supply drop example they could turn the rogue status off if your participating. A simple way for the game to know if you participate is if you opt in. which we already do in pve. passing by an encounter gives you an option to "override" and change your mission to it. They would use this mechanic for players to be marked for participating.

mongrelshadow14 It already is scaled for your level of rogue I'm pretty sure, but i'm rank 47 in DZ and if I die normally to a boss i lose around 10k exp which is just under half a rank already, that's without rogue, so if they wanted to tame it down, they'd have to reduce that too, which i'm all for as i think that's a ridiculous amount of exp to lose for dying :( Thing is, with where I'm at, unless the loot is High End, which it hardly ever is, my mate has got 2 drops only ever, and I've had none, then I'm not interested as it would only be dismantled for crafting mats. That and on a slightly separate point, why are all the high end blueprints in the DZ bought off the DZ vendors for DZ credits only lvl 30 while the phoenix credit ones are lvl 31... no idea really but yeah anyway.. Unless all those drops are only high end like if he dropped 2 high end pieces of gear, then maybe, MAYBE i'd consider going rogue for them.. It's a start, and hopefully a discussion that they're having.. Although that DLC coming later called Survival, from what I've heard, will have a lot more PvP Also, separate subject, why can't we get cosmetics that allow us to look like the First Wave guys we fight with the LMB, full face gas masks and hoods with urban camo etc, they look so cool!

A few Issues must be adressed: N1: Rogue must be more rewarding, since you pretty much get the same items and DZ funds if you kill mobs as a non-rogue. Plus when you are rogue the entire DZ is chasing you. N2: Division tech crates are on to high of a CD. I did a test where I sat near a Division tech crate for 45 minutes and it didn't spawn back at which point I just gave up. N3: They should make a guide that explains certain stuff, like CAPs, how the loot works exactly. N4: They should make it available for 2 changes per item, instead of one

Awesome review Datto and this is exactly why your channel is one of only a few video-game channels I subscribe to. You put in the work and effort to break down the game systems and figure out how to use them to your advantage, which is something I've always done as well. In my experience playing MMOs, not a lot of people have a care in the world about things like that, or at the very least have never had the information put in front of them in a way that has got them interested and invested. I know you think the review was long-winded, but I thought it was perfect and the way you approach games and your content isn't something you should feel guilty about or change. I really hope that your subscriber base continues to grow and more people learn to analyze games and their systems in the way they should be. Most video games have a disparaging lack of information in regards to their systems and mechanics and that's extremely frustrating for people trying to.. actually play the game. This is especially the case in Destiny and your videos have been a godsend to save me hours upon hours if not even days of trial and error, testing and theory crafting. Until games start to realize how to actually explain their mechanics and develop strong complimentary systems, we're all very lucky to have you there to watch our backs. Much love, Dubby

Datto read for critiques on review: Extremely, extremely well done review, at the quality of many of the review CHANNELS. Tips to make the video better: You literally have the video set up perfectly to have some form of an annotation from the beginning of the 'details' to the summary. In other words, I would recommend putting an annotation and say something about how if you don't want to listen to the depth analysis of the game and my opinions on it, press the annotation below to skip to my overall summary. Than after/before your summary, maybe put some ratings? It wouldn't have to be like ONE rating, maybe like Mechanics; Graphics; Immersion; Ect; and than finally OVERALL RATING: Anyways, If you did all of that in my opinion there would by far be nobody better in the video game reviewing section of youtube. Than again from what I've seen that's already close to true, but I have a slight bias because I prefer extreme depth and analysis of a game from somebody who actually plays a lot of games, rather than a "Yeah i played this game through the story, and it was awful so ye um 4/10" Keep up the great and improving work, this is coming from somebody who's been subscribed since Vault days. :)

Excellent review, Datto! You really broke down every single thing I have wanted to know about the game for months with how it would turn out. you even offered some very helpful guidance on what the game will evolve into as I keep playing. I'm currently level 9 or 10 and love the game wholeheartedly so far. Been playing mostly solo and see the in game matchmaking making the overall package much more solo - friendly compared to Destiny, which seems to just hate its solo players. I play that solo too, but am walled off from Trials and the raids. So I like the Division a lot more for not locking me out of its content just for not having a gaming squad. I'd prefer first person, but feel the Division's shooting and sound effects are the best I've ever seen for third person games. Your length was fantastic on the review too. It's a huge game, so I think it's warranted.

Solid review Mr. D. I think you covered a lot of the important material. Reiterating something is not a bad thing. It is important to get points across if you feel like it is absolutely necessary. The length could have possibly been shortened as most people have a tough time watching videos for longer than 10min. However, all in all this was a very solid review. I look forward to seeing more reviews in the future. (insert typical destiny and division comparison here)

After putting MANY hours into Diablo 3 right before moving on to The Division, I couldn't agree more with your assessment. Countless other reviewers are making this a Destiny vs. Division discussion when they really are ultimately 2 very different experiences. Kudos for being the ONLY KZbinr (as far as I can tell) to make that connection. Since you asked for feedback on your review, here goes. Overall, nicely done. You covered all of the main points and highlights and gave a thorough, honest assessment with a style that is completely your own. My only bit of constructive criticism would be that this video seemed very 'off the cuff' and free-styled. I think people would generally enjoy a more structured review with clear 'sections' speaking to segmented aspects of the experience so they can get an idea for what areas/aspects of the game they may enjoy (or not enjoy) the most. But again, overall, great job!

This review helps a lot in deciding whether to buy the game or not, so thanks for that! There was a lot of depth, and you covered everything that every other review has been talking about and also said things I didn't hear anyone else saying, which is great.

I really like how you addressed the game mechanics and overall style of play. People watch and read reviews ultimately to make a purchasing decision and I like how you broke it down. "If you like x game mechanic then you will like the game. If you don't like x mechanic, don't kid yourself, you won't like the game." Yeah, it was a bit long, but I watched the whole thing, so I think that speaks to the fact that you were still providing new, relevant information.

Great video. I'd love to see some analysis of the various weapon types and how they compare to each other. SMGs vs. LMGs vs. ARs etc. Keep up the good work. :)

great review, liked the length and the good level of content - I hate it when other reviews just skip over stuff so it's nice to get a balanced opinion. looking forward to more content on this game

The review was great. It covered all of the points I personally wanted to know about so Im gonna say it was well thought out and comprehensive. As for length of video, I feel like about 15 minutes is the sweet spot. That being said, going longer is totally fine if there's more that needs to be explained. I was pretty excited when I saw the 15+ minute timer because I needed a meaty, detail driven review to help me make the final decision on whether or not to buy the game. I cant speak for the community as a whole, but to me, a $60 purchase deserves more than 5 minutes worth of thought. Thanks for setting the bar with another great vid. We see and appreciate your effort.

Seriously man you have amazing guides. The review was done very well. Everything is always so organized and put together and is really easy to understand. The guides themselves are basically what got me through a lot of stuff on destiny I look forward to more stuff from you with destiny and the division in the future. You're awesome, you make great content and you just keep doing what you're doing because it's great.

Really good review. The comparisons between games was spot on and better than any other youtubers review. Also the request for a positive rating was funny lol. And the video was long but I thinl ever second was meaningful. No fluff. Review of review 9.5/10 Well done :)

I think you did a great job summarizing what the experience is like up to 48+ hours. Im there and still have a bunch to learn about stat maximaization. I would love to see you play the games you like to play and give reviews simalar to this one 20 min is nothing to me if I'm folding laundry or making supper this content is great for that dont worry about making longer content. I love to listen to what you have to say even while destiny was dead to me i would listen to you talk about the state of pvp or what was going to happen to the game in the future. Thanks for all your work!~

Thanks for your extensive review and your ability to anticipate questions that your viewers would want answered. I always enjoy long-form reviews and this helped clarify what this game has to offer. The anecdotes certainly helped with how I this game is played. Thanks for your review man, good work :)

I think it was a sold review, covered all the major points and some of the minor ones as well. I myself just got the division but am currently only at level 8, this was helpful to me because it let me catch a glimpse as to what to expect in the future of the game as well. Good job man!

Wonderfully detailed Datto! Good length considering how much there is to talk about. Your diction is very good so when you talk for extended periods of time is doesn't sound monotonous. I've recently purchased The Division and I'm about 6/7 hours in and watching this has psyched me up to reach that end game loot as soon as possible :-). Thank you and good job!

Datto,Here's my positive rating: You convinced me to buy this and give it a shot. I played the Beta and was pretty into it but I was worried it wasn't going to grab my attention. After seeing the end game activities there are to grind I'm sold. I was and still am a huge player of D3 and I totally see where you the correlation between the two. You're review of The Division was indepth but not full of hot air and BS. I appreciate that you script your videos and put the thought and effort into them. Let's not forget you're penchant for mathcrafting numbers for us analytically minded! :) Keep up the awesome work my friend!

thanks bae. In terms of your review, I like the length, you do a great job going in depth with things which is appreciated. That being said, I think you may have glossed over some of the major pros about this game. Maybe mentioning more of what other people may love about the game (the beautiful environment, the attention to detail, the way the guns feel) may be beneficial. It's easy to take a negative approach to reviews even when you like the game if you're an analytical person, but it make people think the game is just alright instead of "good"

Datto mate I really enjoyed the video!! You covered a lot because there is a lot to cover in a game such as this! I played the Alpha and both Beta's and I preordered the game, and it was still nice to hear someone go over everything. I would have liked to hear more about your take on the dark zone, maybe a video about your experiences in the dark, how easy/hard you found it to rank up and whether your time was spent mainly alone or with an unstoppable squad of four. Haha but overall really enjoyed the video! Keep up the good work :)

Awesome review! Very good points! I loved it. I'm enjoying the Division, just hit level 30 two days ago and I'm only 28 in dark zone and I'm still using blue/green gear.. Only a couple purples and 1 high end piece. Ive still got a way to go and I'm enjoying the grind. It feels fresh each time and challenge mode is super fun because it takes your whole team to actually try.

I knew I wasn't the only one with that reload problem... It really almost gets me killed. Another issue that sorta needs to be addressed is that the Division does not have any priority in any action you do (like Datto mentioned on reloading). If you want to revive your teammate, you press and hold "Square," or "X." Say your teammate is next to an ammo crate or anything that can be used. You will sometimes use the useable or revive them. This seriously becomes an issue when you're in a higher level mission. Otherwise, Datto, your review was pretty solid. Adding personal experiences was a nice touch. As I too can relate to the getting to cover and reloading issues.

It's a pretty good review. You are doing pretty well at getting your points across and the viewer isn't left with confusion as to what you meant at any point. Some things you might want to mention in a future review would be the mechanical difficulty of the game as well as the games graphics and sound.

Well put out review man and liked that you focus on the content available instead of complaining about what is not in there from the initial E3 trailer. Example, Angry Joe complained about how some things are not in the final product as promised. So I respect that you took your path in the review instead of sounding like the entitled millennials. But basically what I've been saying if you like 3rd person shooter style and Diablo 3 then you might like this game. Me and my friends have been enjoying it as we are a bunch of Diablo nuts back when D1 launched. Just remember though everyone, even Diablo 3 had a rocky launch and look how that turned out. I am hoping for a similar effect with the Division where in time it will be even better.

Really good review. I think it could stand to be shortened by maybe 5mins. However, with the depth of content that you covered, I'm not sure what you could have left out. The most important point of the review that I don't think can be overemphasized is - IF YOU DON'T ENJOY THIRD PERSON SHOOTERS, THIS GAME IS NOT FOR YOU! I like everything about the division outside of the third person aspect. Unfortunately, it makes me feel a little motion sick. So, I'm not as up for grinding Division as I was for an FPS like Destiny. Anyways, great review. Glad to see you have some new content to cover.
