6:04 Since you asked :) Slight difference in presence when you are holding the mic 2 transmitter in front of you, more of an «up front in your face» sound, but the quality of the mic 2 is still really good :)

I can hear a difference between the two for sure. And there's certainly more body in the NTG 5. But both vhave ery different polar pattens - but they get the job done!

@@PaulGarrity Absolutely, the quality is really good on both, and they work well together :) some small tweakage on the dji mic 2, or just holding it a bit further from your mouth it would probably be almost indistinguishable :) Also, while I have you here, gotta compliment you on your delivery, reeeeeeally good, casual and relaxed, had to sub when I just happened onto your channel, some good stuff indeed :)

It would work, but there’ll be trade offs. Personally, it’s not the sound I would look for in a podcast as these microphones are omnidirectional. As most podcasts use dynamic microphones to reject unwanted sound/signals etc Also, you can get drift if you record internally. So syncing up in post needs extra care for long form. If it had time code, which it doesn’t, that would solve that issue. Hope that helps you 👍

I use the Mic2' in my motorcycle helmet for my fledgling motovlogging channel, as the fact they connect wirelessly to the DJI Osmo Action 4's means the whole set up is completely weatherproof. The only real problem I have had with them is that occasionally they fail to connect to the camera automatically, which isn't easy to see when riding. Stupidly, i hadn't turned on the internal recording on my last trip and ended up with no narration on several clips. I won't do that again! DJI are releasing the Mini Mic on 26th November, so it's be interesting to see how that compares, but I doubt they'll have all the features of the MIc2 as they are half the size.

Thank you! And I think you're right regarding the mini mics. If it's anything like the Rode versions, it will be stripped down. But I'd have thought a lower price might entice new people into the eco system. That's what these big companies want!

Thanks for the informative video Paul, I have the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 with the DJI MIC 2 so I can appreciate its versatility. I could hear a very small difference between the Rode and Mic 2 in your office test (slightly less fuller sound in the latter). It would be totally fine for KZbin but would you suggest using the "audio enhancements" in software like Final Cut to tweak the audio if I wanted a fuller sound? I've had success with this in eliminating background noise but obviously capturing good audio at the start is ideal.

Thank you for your kind words, appreciate it! Out of the box I think the two sounds are because of the different polar patterns...so the Rode will capture the audio more directly. Also its diaphragm is different. You certainly can tweak the sound in post, but it depends on how much time you have. I haven't changed the mic 2 audio or the lav audio yet. But you could try using a single band compressor to give the sound more body. I have done that with audio before. But I'm sure there are other people better placed than I to advise on such matters! 😀

Thank you! The 32-Bit float is something that you'll really like. Even for safety, its a feature that's good to have. But I would realy like timecode in future versions 👍

I'll be honest, I'm not sure what firmware I'm on. The firmware updates just merge into each other at this point! 😂 I do know it's not the latest version. I might update them this week and see if theres a difference in sound. Thank you for pointing that out 👌👌

@ you definitely should update to the latest, I watched several videos showing a significant change (improvement) in how they sound and I’ve noticed it myself with my Mic 2

I read that using Røde lav mics, instead of DJI ones, can create problems with the DJI mic, have you encountered that problems? Maybe the clippings of the rum scene are due to this? Thank you so much and go Everton, as a Roma supporter 😅

I’ve had no issues using the Rode mics. They’ve worked perfectly. The reason for the clipping was because I had the them set to -6db for a previous job. So after the run scene I adjusted it and it was fine 👍 so much going on at both clubs, I think we’re both after some stability!! 🤪 thank you! 🙌

Thank you! I normally start at around -12db then work from there. But I’d say that gives you enough headroom so you don’t clip. But of course other situations need adjustment 👍

Good video, Paul. Can you explain more about the internal recording? How is it retrieved for post production? Internal to the Osmo pocket is easy enough and straightforward, but I don’t understand how the mic 2’s separate recording is stored/retrieved.

Thank you! The microphones save the audio files as the Pocket 3 does with its video/audio. So plug in via the USB and the files are listed and you just drag and drop. No programmes needed. Really easy!

@InnocentsAbroad in my testing, unfortunately not. They will need syncing in post. The audio files are around 23 minutes max in length and need stitching. Time code would solve the sync issue. But not device is perfect!

The microphones aren’t waterproof. I haven’t used them in the elements yet - but I would use them in the field with lavs if it was raining. But of course that’s personal preference.

It depends on the use case really. If you want to use it to broadcast to the audience, then I’d say not. But if you wanted to clip it to yourself to capture audio to use later, then it should be fine. Hope that helps 👍

Great video on the Dji Mic 2 :) I bought it on day 1 … and was *really* disappointed. Made a video on my channel that same day highlighting the flaws and it *popped off* … The main problem was DJI saying it could connect via bluetooth to smartphones in their marketing, but hiding the fact the by audio codec they used was really low quality, so unusable. The second problem was that while connected to smartphone via BT the internal recording feature is disabled, so *no* backup recording to sync with the awful BT audio recorded in camera/on phone. Third issue was that the Dji Mic 2 doesn’t work with the iPhone native camera app, this was also not communicated clearly by DJI. Not a problem for «pro» users, but for those of us starting small using our phones a big deal. It does work great with the blackmagic camera app though, but I couldn’t use that at the time. Also, straight out of the box the audio quality on day one was *muffled* using the transmitter without lav. This caused a lot of people to hold it in their hands (yeah, that whole thing). The muffled audio has since been improved by a firmware update that took almost 6 months to materialize. Over time though, with the firmware update, experimenting with placement of the transmitter unit (haven’t been able to buy a lav yet), and some fiddling with EQ etc making a couple of more vids on it the Dji Mic 2 has improved a lot and is now a good alternative for good audio, but it does need a bit of experimentation to get great audio almost out of the box :) Another small gripe is that some settings *have* to be set via the receiver, so buying just the mic/transmitter to use with a phone without the receiver is sadly still not very smart, since low cut filter can’t be turned off, and 32 bit float backup can’t be turned on without the receiver (unless using action 4 or pocket 3) - so for those hoping for a *very* simple setup using just a mic and a phone it’s not a great option still :/ But since they have the single mic/receiver combo, which røde doesn’t have for their mics, it’s still a great solution, just not as good as it could have been :)

I think to summarise, and apologies for doing so, the big companies want us -the consumers - to fix these issues with money. So the more bits of kit you buy...you get past the short comings. They all do it. It's by design. We can always hope one day it will be different. But we'll probably be waiting a very long time!
