I started my filmmaking career back in 1989, working my way up the ladder from a loader to second AC, first AC, DP, Steadicam operator, director, producer, and film production company owner. Over the years, I’ve worked with just about every film camera you can think of: ARRI 2C, 3, BL4, Aaton, Mitchell, Photosonics, Panavision, including underwater and aerial systems like Spacecam. I’ve been through all the challenges with equipment, post-production, and budget management. I retired in 2013, but I still keep up with how filmmaking has evolved, and honestly, it’s a lot easier and cheaper now than it was 30 years ago. Many filmmakers complain about the digital era, but the truth is, film was a medium for the privileged few. Digital really changed the game, democratizing the industry and giving more people a chance to explore their creativity. I’m happy to see a camera like DJI’s Ronin 4D; it’s made life so much easier, faster, and affordable for both cinematographers and producers. I hope ARRI, RED, SONY, Blackmagic, and others follow DJI and bring similar integrated solutions like the Ronin 4D. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the camera.

@@constantsmile3370 AWWWWW ... Thank you for that vote of confidence... I totally agree with what you said about the Camera does not make the art. The backstory... *I could write a script on how the whole story came about writing a script for a play... that ended up becoming a movie. (I will try to make this short, but don't bet on it)... This is a Crazy story... but now it is my life. I am an Actress... kind'a retired... My daughter was in Drama in High school. I was writing for a Newspaper. When the Drama Teacher asked me to write a Stage PLAY ... it had to be in the 1950s... and about New Mexico. I began writing the play, 3 Act Structure. Then I found that the PLAY was turning into a Manuscript, so I thought I'll make the play, but also add to the story and write a novel... While writing this Manuscript--- Play... The Drama Teacher's Husband, who was home at this time between movies ... he was a Movie Director on films... had seen that I had given a copy to his wife of the on-going script/play. So he decided to sit down and "Critique" my Play/Manuscript. The next thing I know... I'm asked to go to a dinner party... except I am the only guest and the other two people are the Drama Teacher and her Movie Director Husband... I thought I was in trouble... At this private dinner party... Mr and Mrs told me to forget about writing for the school play and finish the manuscript and publish a book... but most of all to write a Screenplay for a movie. !!! "Excuse me"... I write for a newspaper... (well, just because I have 4 other manuscripts written... that doesn't mean anything... does it?) This Film Director was serious... So... I am going to write a Screenplay... better yet, a Limited Mini Series for TV... He said he would even direct it too... for $500,000. (yikes). The reason I would rather make a Limited Mini TV Series is after doing my due diligence... I found out, that more 'families" would rather stay home (save money) and watch a movie or a limited mini series on TV... like Hutu or Netflix that spend a small fortune to take their family to the movies... and they can watch it over and over. This has been very popular since COVID... people started staying home more. A 2 hour movie is much more expensive to make also Sorry this was so long. IF... you are still reading this.. so far... THANK YOU. This is a BIG Leap of Faith on my part...

I have had my 4d for over 2 years and I have all the possible accessories. I think my favorite things on this camera are 1. Dynamic range 2. Transmission system 3. 3 channel follow focus 4. Gps module for car mounting 5. 4d flex pan axis lock for heavier lenses 6. Dual handles 7. Pro res raw and 4444xq (6k version) 8. Lens mount options 9. Blackmagic style easy menu system. 10. for lightweight you need like an fx3 and an rs-- without the pro on the end. That said, my RS3 Pro with komodo and 11-20 tokina cine is beefy as well. with the 4d, you have better points of contact and is easier to use with an easy rig of sorts. It's niche but the weight shouldn't deter you if you fit that market. only downside with a smaller rig is like he said, lots of cables and different batteries. Add a v mount or gold mount to eliminate this and it bulks up quick.

Curran - ignore the haters. I’ve been doing this for a living for 26 years, shooting corporate and small market broadcast work. If this lives up to the hype, it’s a game changer. It also makes the wannabe film boys nervous because they can’t have all that mattebox/rods/monitor/cable GAS crap hanging off of their ridiculously unusable camera rig. I live in the real world. Questions: 1. Do you run telephoto zoom lenses on this set up, and how do you get those lenses to balance? I run the Sony 70-200 2.8 V2 and never want to give it up 😂 2. What is the auto focus tracking performance with E-mount lenses? That is critical when operating a gimbal in fast moving situations.
@FinalGrade3 ай бұрын
One thing you didn't comment on which I am always the most curious about is lens weight compatibility. The only thing that always keeps me from getting this is wanting really nice zoom lenses for quick moments that I cant recapture and don't have time for a lens change. The gimble can only handle so much weight. It can handle my nisi Athenas but I don't think it will handle my samyang 35 -150.
@CurrenSheldon3 ай бұрын
Yes it has a bout a 1kg limit, but has some restrictions on length as well. Not a lot of great zooms for it and DJI really needs to bring out a companion to their 17-28mm T3 with that functionality. Something like a 28-75mm T3 would be a huge boost for doc filmmaking. I shoot with primes A LOT these days, so there are plenty that work just fine and I haven't thought about it too much.

Are you using the 6k or 8k version? I do feel the 8k version was a pretty big leap in terms of color and IQ. But everything else makes sense - systems and gears depend on the ecosystem you want to be a part of. Thanks for this video man... Really great quality. I've been thinking about this camera for over 6 months now! Mainly because I do not have a super big budget, otherwise I would probably already have gotten it. There are some pretty sweet deals going on right now and it seems dumb not to get one now almost... The only thing I'm thinking is that there might be a new version coming out in September following some DJI leaks(?). But even if a smaller version comes out, it would probably not come near the specs of the 8K. I also kind of want to get a heavier camera, even though it's a bit scary, that you always have to carry the weight of the gimbal, cause I also love handheld shooting. My last thought is about noise... I've seen such different experiences regarding low light and noise, that I am very confused. I feel like a lot of people do not know how to properly expose on this camera(?) and end up with super noisy footage, whether it is h.264, Pro Res HQ or RAW (which is noisier anyways). Some people even said that some units have a noise problem and others don't... But can that really be the case? You see, I still have a lot of questions haha, but it was great to see your video pop up in my feed this morning! Apart from a few things it still seems like this camera fits all my needs at the moment and would spare me buying a bunch of other things. Two other questions I would have: 1. are you able to use waveforms/focus peaking in all resolutions? I heard some people say that once you hot the record button those functions are gone..? 2. How is your experience using this purely handheld? As I said not always using the gimbal is something that I want to do and I am wondering if the drawbacks with this compared to an FX6 let's say are bearable. Thanks again for your effort and great review, any input is appreciated! ~ Phill
@buddyfx70263 ай бұрын
If you love handheld, probably not the camera for you. handheld and sticks can do so much for composition and gimbals can get played out. As far as something better coming out, this camera still checks lots of boxes (and I'm talking about the 6k version). What is infront of you camera is what matters more now a days than what camera you have. These create beautiful images and do well in "low light" but you have to exposure properly and know it's limitations of course. It's a heavier camera (really not too heavy) so it should feel solid for some "handheld-ish" shots. That said, like buying a RED komodo, once you get your accessories it'll add up quick. My 6k I'm like 11k in. Same with my Komodos, accessories add up! Also DJI kind of forces you to get their SSD cards and batteries. vmount/goldmount and cfast only options would be better for the prosumer.

I am actually a big gimbal fan, doing lots of moving shots, action etc. which is one of the reasons I am interested in this camera but obviously you don’t want every shot to look like it was done on a gimbal, so I’m just looking for ways to make both work. Still seems like the pros outweigh the cons here…

@@PhillGraaf Lots of great points by @buddyfx7026 and I'll echo a couple. Definitely not a camera for the handheld look. Get a C300 III for that. With that said, I've seen a lot of people use the DJI Flex with a cage and still have the great functionality and usability of the Ronin 4D. Noise - I think most of the complaints have been on people not quite understanding a raw workflow. There is NO noise reduction in ProRes Raw at all, so you have to apply it in post. I have mostly used ProRes 422HQ and always shoot at the native ISO of 320 or 1600 and have had zero issues with noise. Focus peaking always stays on for me, but there may be a couple of settings I haven't shot yet. But I have done most of them (8k HQ, ProRes Raw, 4k HQ, 4k 120, 4k 60). no gimbal works to give you a smooth footage when you are shooting and 'walking or running', except for this one. That's why I want one so bad. I wonder if the footage looks just as smooth as if you were flying a drone. Gimbal footage with that up and down variation caused by walking or running is a problem that needed to be eliminated, well done to dji for doing that. Now I just have to wait till they make these for the average joe as I cannot at the moment justify the need to spend $12k for the 8k version since I'm not a professional cinematographer. But makes me wish I was. I would love to use that thing.

Thanks but why is the lens system on these cameras so rarely discussed? It looks like a fixed lens system (which is a bit off putting tbh) but are there other lens mount options? I'd like to know more.
@CurrenSheldon3 ай бұрын
Yep you can change the lens mount, so you have a pretty wide selection: E-Mount, L-Mount, DL-Mount, PL-Mount, and then can adapt EF Mount to any of the mirrorless mounts. When I rented it before I used the Panasonic f1.8 prime series and those were PERFECT. But I think the Sony f1.4 series would be great, the Sigma f2 and f1.4 primes, or even quite a few cinema lenses (I am using the Cooke SP3s with it for the feature doc I am shooting - 🤩). It's definitely a prime-lens system at this point, thought the DJI 17-28 is T3 lens is pretty great - I just never shoot that wide. DJI really does need to get a 28-75mm T3 lens out that is the same size, weight, and functionality as the wide angle.

Currently running the Cooke SP3s, but have used the amazing Panasonic f1.8 series, Dulens mini primes, the new Thypoch Simera-Cs, Voigtlander M-Mount lenses, etc etc - Any of the newer Sony primes (even the f1.4 and f1.2 ones) would work fine as well and are well below the weight limit. As well as the Blazar Remus and DZO Vespids. No, you can't use chunky 1.2kg zooms on the Ronin 4D, but I rarely use zooms anyway - there are A LOT of lenses that work, you just can't use ANY lens with the gimbal (though, you can if you just use it like a normal, handheld camera and lock the gimbals).
@movingtreemedia3 ай бұрын
What would you recommend for lenses with auto-focus for this camera?
@CurrenSheldon3 ай бұрын
From what I've seen, the L-Mount works much better than the E-Mount for AF and general reliability, so I'd go with some Panasonic or Sigma lenses. Panasonics f1.8 prime series (18, 24, 35, 50, and 85mm) are all the exact same size and weight, so are a perfect match for a gimbal device like the Ronin 4D. They also have a 28-200mm that is around the same size I'd LOVE to try on this camera - as well as a 100mm f2.8 macro that is the same size/weight as well. If you wanted something faster, all of the Sigma f1.4 primes are within the weight limit (20, 24, 35, 50, and 85mm). Or the Sigma Contemporary F2 lenses, which I LOVE the look and feel of.

My least favorite thing about this camera which I hope they provide a module to fix is that you have to use proprietary batteries. Why not allow people to adapt their vmount or goldmount batteries? Feels a little dumb if they are trying to convince people to invest/transition to this system. I guarantee this wont be most peoples first camera, so they should really consider the fact that people are gonna have existing gear they are hoping to adapt to this camera to make it a lower cost entry.
@CurrenSheldonАй бұрын
I would love for it to use V-Mounts. The DJI batteries are great, slim, and makes the rig very streamlined, but yes, would be nice to be able to use non proprietary batteries.
@LeapingDogFilmsАй бұрын
@ exactly! I like the dji batteries too-I just think it was a big mistake not considering that people would probably want to use their Vmounts/gold mounts for it (well they probably considered it-but just didn’t make it a priority for some reason). But the problem we have rn is they aren’t producing enough batteries (seems like they are back ordered rn and I won’t be able to get one till December which is a huge inconvenience)
@DastanZhumagulov3 ай бұрын
It’s an interesting camera for sure, but having rented the 6k version for several projects, I feel like it’s got a bit too much of that digital look that DJI cameras (meaning X5 and X7) have. Shot a project where similar setups were used with Red Komodo and 4D, and Komodo definitely looked better in the grade and required less fiddling to get a filmic image. Secondly, being limited with small lightweight lenses is a big downside for me, as most of the “interesting” looking glass is beyond what 4D gimbal can handle. Heck, even if we take Garland & Hardy duo as an example, Ex Machina and Annihilation look way cooler compared to Civil War. But hey, as far as all arounder cameras go, I think Ronin 4D is hard to beat and will perfectly suit most of sports, doc, action, corporate & event type of shoots, especially with a limited or no crew
@CurrenSheldon2 ай бұрын
If you're able , test out the 8k version - I think it's WAY nicer than the 6k version - the OLPF and that sensor does a lot of extra work to get a more filmic image. I am also using it primarily with the Cooke SP3s, which I think helps - haha.

Anyone with experience with this camera, how bad of a choice is it to film in h264 with d-log? Drive space is a thing for me cuz of my mobile work but I love the grading/ post-processing flexibility of the RAW.
@CurrenSheldon3 ай бұрын
That's a good question as it would be nice to have a smaller file size now and again. I saw a video from Mark. Art. Now. about how he films everything in 8k ProRes Raw and then transcodes it over to h265 to save 90% of the file space - still need a lot of SSDs on the day, but long term storage becomes miniscule. I wouldn't necessarily say "It's all you need". Many factors in filmmaking to consider. I operate Steadicam Aero 30 with a Canon R5C for Anamorphic projects, Ronin 4D shoots spherical Full frame 17:9, no options for Anamorphic at all depsite being released back in 2021. But it does help for tight spaces where the Steadicam is too big of a rig. Some codecs are still limited in the 8K sensor as well, with weight limitations on certain zoom lenses. It's still a beast, but I'm sticking with my current gear until DJI bring some more firmware updates to the sensor and more lens compatibility.
@CurrenSheldon3 ай бұрын
Yes, the lack of anamorphic aspect ratios is a bummer, though the only lenses it could take right now are 1.5x anamorphics anyway. Which isn't too, too bad on a 16:9 sensor, in terms of image needed to crop.
