Esther pretty much sums up the player of nightmares. That was pretty much every problem player I've dealt with in the past...combined. Obnoxous assholes and the DMs will turn a blind eye to them until its too late, or even sides with them against everyone else. The accusation of the OP for the story being a predatory White man taking on the guise of a half-Asian woman was an extreme stretch though, wow. And sucks that the DM ended up turning out to be an atrocious person too.

I'm mute due medical reasons and its nice to hear that there are people with mutism out there getting to play ttrpgs :) Honestly having your only form of communication taken from you is incredibly anxiety inducing, and also.. ableist. RIP Getting yelled at to talk when you can't, or people being overly bothered by your disability is isolating. Having friends who accept you as you are, wholly, is the best.
@TheMightyBattleSquid8 күн бұрын
If you're still looking to get into ttrpgs, the way I got started was full text games on discord. We still used dnd rules and such, the only difference was we typed instead of talking. Such games will probably be advertised as "play by post" (so basically post whenever you get the time within a few days) but in my experience people eventually get tired of waiting and just start organizing full or mini-sessions, where most if not all of the group can be on to really get into the flow of things.

I'm also mixed Asian (and neurodivergent like you, hey!) and I've been told I'm not "really" Asian by an ex-friend, among other awkward interactions, although none of them were THIS wretched. I'm sorry your ex-friends were that weird and creepy to you, I hope you've started to process by now that you deserve so much better. Hope it's not weird to say I feel a kinship with you as a fellow ND mixed Asian, and I really do wish you all the best. I hope you find a good game.

What really makes me mad about the mute story is, OP warned the party about what they were gonna do and even waited for them to move! And Ester chose to ignore them and not move! Unfortunately some people have the mentality that if they don't accommodate people with these kinds of difficulties, then they'll just adapt and get over it. Speaking from experience. It's kind of like a knock off/ reverse Savior Complex, they think they're doing you a favor by making things difficult for you so you can "act normal". The rest of that story is a whole can of worms I don't want to open.
@TheMightyBattleSquid8 күн бұрын
@@RiveroftheWither yup, pretty much. The "love hurts," "exposure therapy," "learn to swim by dropping you in the water to figure it out" sort. On the note of that last example, my family was actually that sort, which resulted in me not learning to properly swim until I was like 15. It was embarassing as all hell because I was the oldest kid in a summer camp and they required you pass a test before you were allowed past a certain depth. Even though I was tall enough to stand in said depth, I wasn't allowed until I took the test. So, knowing I didn't learn to swim, I just put up with hanging out in the shallow end. But... even the youngest kids eventually learned to swim well enough for the test. So I finally caved and learned to not be the only one hanging out in the corner. 🙃

Yup. Mythbusters tested just that with explosives in water. Basically, air can be compressed, which eats up energy, diffusing the explosive force over distance. Water is already maximally condensed, so the explosive force is carried fully over a much larger distance. That’s why you should never knock on a fish tank.

i once joined a game with my friends that was in a setting inspired by ancient greece. my character was an escaped slave who grew up in an (illegal) physically underground coliseum. she was taught how to be a druid by an emotionally distant and fierce old man, who had no tolerance for weakness, and after teaching her the basics, he turned into a spider and left. once she managed to ace her wildshape, she turned into a bear and *slaughtered* her way out. (btw she was a spore druid because the only plants that grew in the cells was fungi, and a connection to nature was necessary) that was all backstory. i asked a friend about his character being my connection to the party and he was cool with it. we plotted a little about how to do it. when we met up in-game, my character gave him an active bitch face and threw a rock at him and said "don't like it, DO YA?". it was so out of left field that the rest of the group (including the DM) intervened, worried about pvp. my character later went on to VIOLENTLY chastise the (very honourable) king for doing nothing about the illegal arenas. i explained my backstory (which the dm was already aware of) and the king was so mortified that he put his best men on the job immediately.

Regarding Safety checklists: When DMing for my family, I don't bother with safety checklists, because I KNOW THEM. And I mean, I know them WELL. Moreover, they know ME, and they have no qualms about saying, "Hey! STOP THAT!" the minute I make them feel uncomfortable. Confrontation fears aside, it's a lot easier to stand up to a sibling or an aunt/uncle than it is to stand up to an acquaintance. Your family HAS to love you and not let a little thing like, "You hurt my feelings on Tuesday," get in the way of having you over for Thanksgiving. An acquaintance, on the other hand, may very well say, "You misgendered me on Monday and I WILL NEVER SPEAK TO YOU AGAIN." So, yeah, the stakes are WAY different, and at least in MY family, practically non-existent amongst ourselves. We don't have "falling outs." We have minor tiffs, now and again, that get resolved quickly, with more apologies than the original pain. I LOVE my family! I used to think ALL families were like that, and then I grew up, met other people, and became ABSOLUTELY AMAZED at my parents and how they managed to raise a bunch of children into BEST FRIENDS FOR LIFE, as well as fully functional adults in society, able to make friends with other people, as well. However, when setting up to DM for a group of mostly strangers, with one or two acquaintances that I know I LIKE, but haven't had a lot of history with, having only been loosely acquainted, mainly through a third party, for a few years, YOU BET I am doing a Session Zero with ALL the safety checks. In fact, I'm a middle-aged person, getting ready to DM for a teenager and her friends (she asked me to teach her how to play D&D), and I said, straight up, "First off, we are inviting at least one parent, so that EVERYONE FEELS SAFE. You'll feel safe with your mother (plus, I LIKE your mother), and your friends you invite will feel safe with your mother, because they know her, and your friends parents will feel safe with your mother, because they know her, and if they still want some reassurance, they are welcome to come and watch the game, or play with, but I have room for four players, no more. YOU choose the make-up of the group, and be sure to invite people who make you feel safe." That might have made her wonder why I was making a big deal of it, but I have SEEN the "I should have seen the red flags!" stories, where they mention a middle-aged person and a young protagonist, who didn't know they were being groomed. And I know that gender does not equal safety. And I know that GOOD parents want to VET the people their children play with, at least at first. I know mine sure did. So, making it clear that I'm doing my best to make them feel safe about the age difference is not JUST for them. It's for ME, too. Because sometimes, people LIE. And darn it, I WANT WITNESSES. If anyone should ever accuse me of something (this particular young person would not, I'm sure, but I don't know who they might invite), then I want trustworthy witnesses to say, "What? No way!" and diffuse the situation. You see, I have ALSO seen/read the "THEY LIED ABOUT ME" stories. Safety and checklists is NOT just about role-playing at the table. It's also about "CYA" and about protecting in-real-life vulnerable people, who are not strong enough to stand up for themselves, and say, "Stop that, or I'll kick you where it hurts." That said, as my family grows and the younger generation wants to join in, I think having a Session 0 with safety checklists, even for the ones I know and love, is a good idea, if only to establish in their minds that THIS is the WAY THESE THINGS ARE DONE, and that if they join another group where this step is skipped, then "That is a red flag." It MIGHT just be laziness, or an excess of trust. Or, it might be part of a nefarious plot to take advantage of noobs. Better to set a good example. And then, they can spread that example to THEIR friends, when THEY start running their OWN games. ALSO, even if you've known someone for a long time, and you think you know all their triggers, it's still a good idea to verify that there are no NEW triggers of which you were unaware. Also, sometimes, old triggers go away, and it's cool to be aware of that. It can open doors to knew plotlines, sometimes. Plus, it's just good communication, when you care about someone. TL;DR: ALWAYS do safety checks, unless your relationship with the person is so deep that every day, you're checking on their safety, and you already know what makes them tick. And then? Check, from time to time, anyway, in case of unexpected changes, or even expected improvements, from therapy. "Do you think you might be ready to face an episode set on a ship? No? OK, we'll table that adventure. Maybe in six months, you'll be ready for it. I got a COOL battle map model of a ship, and some minis that I am just ITCHING to use. Keep up the therapy!"

You think a 10 hour combat is bad? One DM of mine pitched this idea of a campaign where he got to break out all of his unnused/underused homebrew and we'd do a "boss rush." We were playing something like level 12 characters but we'd also be getting homebrew stuff added on from his old campaigns. The problem? We got stuck on the first boss for something like 8 sessions of 3-4 hours. We ended up just ending things there. As for why it took so long... 1. he didn't tell us that this first boss fight was not 1 strong enemy and a bunch of minions. No, this was the final boss of a past campaign with all of the bosses (like 20) from that campaign helping. All of them had gotten their numbers upped as well, to make them a challenge in their own right. The boss even had an extra phase where he brought all of the others back to life at 50% hp. 2. Every one of the goons had a gimmick and most of their gimmicks involved being hard to kill. One guy took a quarter damage from all sources, one guy healed from fire damage while spamming fireballs centered on himself, one guy forced disadvantage and roll penalties that stacked, one guy couldn't be hit by single targets, one guy was immune to anything that lasted more than a turn (poison, moon beams, etc.), and much much more. 3. One of our players who signed up didn't mention he would have big college exams every day *after* session. So he'd constantly miss session to study and leave early when he did show to get more sleep or wake up early to study more. 4. The final boss himself had a bunch of immunities that he started off alternating and then he started stacking until he had all of them. The only way to damage him during this time was to successfully grapple him (and he had like a +17) then drag him to one of the small black holes he put in one of the corners of a huge map. Did I mention he could teleport so you had to manage it in one turn and half the party was weak casters who could never grapple him unless they rolled a nat 20?

Not only did this guy give his group two and a half sessions, STRAIGHT, of combat, but he was doing it AT WORK?! He was DMing from a guard shack, where he was supposed to be WORKING?! SECURITY?! I REALLY hope none of the VULNERABLE PEOPLE at that workplace knew that their PROTECTOR was PLAYING D&D ON THE JOB! Sure, sure, it MIGHT have been "just a matter of policy and procedure. Nothing to it. Just checking badges. NOTHING could POSSIBLY go wrong." But, the military brat in me, who lived through several terrorist scares in the area, and verifiable threats against our base, including having to evacuate our school for a bomb threat, is shouting, "NEVER AGAIN! NO DISMISSIVE OR INATTENTIVE GUARDS AT THE GUARD SHAAAAAAACKS!" Just sayin'. The lengthy combat issue was NOT the only issue with this guy.

op of that story here! he was guarding a warehouse with only frozen produce in it. no other human beings were there. it was fine.

2:23 There are plenty of movies and books where a character's arc involves confronting and overcoming their inherent bias against a new form of life - the influences mentioned for this one-shot have that as a major theme. Bringing that into the game as a character's arc sounds like a good thing, and could have been what the GM had in mind. But it only works when the players in question are on board with it, know what the plan is, and let that story develop. And have enough of an understanding between them to be able to tone it down when it gets to be too much.

I'm a little frustrated by the person in the Second Story saying they didn't want to tell the asshole player to stop picking on them because they didn't want to "personalize" the issue. My dude. They're the ones making it personal by constantly picking on you. They're the one at fault not you

I'm halfway through You're Lying and just wanna say that girl has lost her last mind if she can rant for 6000 characters about something that she hasn't even confirmed. edit; I've gotten further 👀

Im surprised the first OP didn't start off by playing play by posts! :o feel like it would be a good intro to gain some confidence before putting yourself out there in other ones, considering she wouldn't stand out at all there.

Ive experienced the beginning but due to players refusing to learn anything and taking their sweet time with no consideration for other's time. Like dudes playing wizards for 8 months and taking 30 minutes on a good day to use fireball.

They were playing as a Drow and have arachnophobia, that can't possibly end well
@ArDeeMee9 күн бұрын
I‘m playing a Drow paladin and cannot WAIT for „find steed“. I‘m weaponising my phobia. =D It also helps if spiders are your favorite animal. And I know I‘m not alone due to all the other arachnophobes in comments of a tarantula breeder‘s channel. „Dave‘s Little Beasties“. His videos are basically little documentaries, and he‘s just the most chill person you‘ve ever seen.

Could be connected, like this drow's arachnophobia is connected to abusers who worshipped spiders.

@ArDeeMee in the Crooked Moon setting, there's a spider race! and any find familiar/find steed is forced to be insectoid for that race

I could see being in _initiative order_ for two and a half four-hour sessions if it was a big climactic five-plots-piling-up situation where some combat, some breaking and entering, frantically trying to complete a magical ritual, infiltration, and trying to distract the attendees of the big social even from _noticing_ any of that are all happening at once and the timing is important. Ten hours of combat, though? Yikes.

in general, as an older player i come from a time where you could count on people knowing what they were getting into when joining a game like Vampire, or KULT or Call of Cthulhu and just played something else when they were too fragile in any way for that, and that was fine on all accounts. that said, times have changed and now i do session 0s for all my games and suggest it for other peoples games i join. That works out very good to my experience. i usually don`t need them for myself but it helps other players, so i have them, no harm done. And if that gets more players into the hobby, thats great.

Very long combats don't bother me too much (I actually like combat in D&D if it's challenging and I get to use my strategic prowess to get through encounters - with a bit of luck, of course), but 10 hours is a bit excessive. I played through Princes of the Apocalypse online with a DM who insisted on playing everything really close to the book, meaning it was a very grindy dungeon delve with lots and lots of long combat encounters - and even I got sometimes a bit bored by it.

@You're LYING Yeah, fuck that group. You're good, OP. You don't need to apologize for anything that happened in that session. 22:08 ah, projection, the classic. They accuse you of pretending to be someone you're not on the internet for attention because they're planning to do it. So they out themselves either unknowingly or to make it seem like "everyone is doing it so it's not a problem for me to do it now." 🙄

That is crazy assumption that person made. My god they really had something agaisnt them. It's jealousy bro. I really feel bad for that girl because they were in danger around those crazy predatory people. I still don't like this riley person red flags. Sorry AHAHA It's giving the movie get out when this woman wanted to become her. Its weird fetishization vibe an I wish op learned more about that. It seemed like they arent aware about red flags. (I am poc black and its something to be aware of so you can protect yourself and feel confident on your boundaries if you know what that is. I feel bad for her bc she seems like she was unprepared. )

The BladeRunner campaign - If the OP doesn't tell people how they feel or what is nothing them, then people probably will not know. Don't expect people to "read the room" or "understand your feelings". You usually need to speak out so people know and understand.
