I immediately knew she was lying when she said Hayao Miyazaki “affectionally nicknamed her the Colombian.” Miyazaki. The guy who’s memed for how cynical he is. The guy who walked out of his own son’s film to smoke a cigarette and called his son’s movie bad. THAT Miyazaki? I had an NDA, I actually saved my scenes in a file, so I can show them after the NDA was lifted. But to be clear. I had 4 or five scenes and it was in the coloring department. There was a possibility of it to happen, and I wasn't the only one, since we were just the "outsource of the outsource", so maybe there is a credit I am, or was not familiar with, so I was in a "block". And still... I didn't effin' believe her, mainly because a first timer won't gat that kind of job. Like half of the comments said, it's striking how she mischaracterizes Miyazaki. It's such a small thing, but it is just striking how little she seems to know about the studio she claimed to work for. Even very casual Ghibli fans know how standoffish and cynical Miyazaki is. How many memes have been made comparing Miyazaki and Junji Ito's demeanors? So not only does she know less about animation than me (self taught and not a great animator, believe me), she also doesn't seem to know what Miyazaki is like. Like, damn. Hi. Colombian here. This girl is SUCH an actual embarrassment it’s insane. We can’t believe this is a thing anyone would do. Also, the whole thing about “he affectionately nicknamed me ‘La Colombiana’ “ is funny for a very key reason. In Colombian culture, we would absolutely make nicknames around people’s nationality, or appearance, or job, or whatever. It’s a form of affection FOR US-but not for the Japanese. Japanese people wouldn’t be like “konnichiwa America-jin-San”. No??? That’s not how Japanese culture sees affection. If anything that is a method of ‘othering’. If anyone did that it might be seen as an insult. Like “Hey, it’s the foreigner”. Japan values people being together and homogenous to an extent. So, why is this funny? It’s because she said this to Colombian interviewers. Because “La Colombiana” would resonate with the Colombian audience she wanted to target. This is like when someone writes a fanfic of a foreign culture and inserts something clearly around their own culture into it. Any Colombian-or any person-who has any experience with Japanese culture, would pick up on the lie. But not everyone knows, right? Not everyone is privileged enough to be able to study a foreign culture. This means that she was banking on the people who interviewed her to be uneducated. She wanted them to be stupid. To be hicks. She wanted them to be as ignorant as her, and in doing so she embarrassed her country. Literal clown moment. And we are so sorry about it. We don’t claim this lady.

Yes, there are cases of people not being credited for their crafts, but without proper evidence, how can others believe it? I HEAVILY doubt that they'd let a STUDENT animate in a project that massive. That and, well, everything else lol. I did get some cool insight on why old, 'cringe' memes get put in kids cartoons. It's simple: Storyboard artists get bored as shit, draw a funny to make the cleanup artists laugh, and the cleanup artists just lock-in and and animate the dumb meme.

@primalycia3 сағат бұрын
I was very confused by the math, personally. It takes roughly 130,000 individual frames for a 90 minute movie so if 25k is 1/3 of a film it's either not 90+ minutes or it is at a very low frame rate. HOWEVER, they could have assumed the animation was done on twos in which case to people unfamiliar with animation such as the interviewers could lead to confusion and thinking that's actually 12 frames per second which would drop that 130k drawings per film to 65k drawings to complete the film.

The lie's especially obvious if you _are_ familiar with the 2d animation pipeline, because a fully staffed studio will have cleanup artists and colorists who, well, clean up and color the animators' frames! So every single frame is actually the product of multiple people's work…
@fullmetalfangirl1222 сағат бұрын
@tinyshinyfeathers exactly! Like unless your studio only has 5 people in it (which obviously ghibli isn't like that) then there's no way only one person is animating 25k frames alone!
@aspenve5 сағат бұрын
A lot of animation studios in Japan still do the animation part of the pipeline traditionally-the "Genga". It is then cleaned and colorized digitally. That doesnt make her story any more believable though. Genga is done by a group of people all sporting different job titles. Key animators do the aniamtion keys, inbetweeners do the inbetweens. Somewhere down the pipeline the Genga is handed to senior animators, character designers and animation supervisors, who all do corrections to the drawings on separate pieces of paper. Those all get scanned and layered, and the cleanup artist then traces them digitally. Then it is handed off to the Cel Painter to colorize, digitally. There is no "illustration" part anywhere down the animation pipeline, except for in the backgrounds. A ton of people are responsible for the completion of scenes and even when speaking about individuals "animating entire scenes by themselves" what is referred to is the Keyframing and Inbetweening of the Genga. The cleanup and colorizing is still done by other people. This woman clearly wasn't well versed in her lies and confused the way animation is still done on paper in Japan today with complete production done on cellulose like back in the day. But even then, Cel painting wasn't done with "Acrylics" or "Watercolor" but paints specificslly deisgned for animation to give clean flat colors. (I'm a self taught, independent hobbyist animator. This is taken from my pool of knowledge.)

Basically, when the technoglass company uploaded the video about Geraldine working on studio Ghibli, that's when people started to get suspicious of her, I think that was also the time when she started to get attention by new outlets, who claimed she worked at studio Ghibli without even checking the credits. One of the funniest things she did was that she showed a certificate in Japanese that she claimed was sent to her from studio Ghibli for her work. People quickly found out that the image of the certificate she used to prove her claim was, not only from google, but it had nothing to do with studio Ghibli, it's a certificate for winning a pottery competition or something. I kinda feel bad for her, I do believe that she's a pathological liar, or that at the very least, she's somewhat used to lying, and that it all started as a white lie to her friend group just to show off her artistic prowess or whatever. This still doesn't excuse her for not admitting her lie when things got out of control or her stolen art in her portfolio, she deserves to be called out for it and that's what she got Btw, I love the La niña y la farsa phrase, it's pretty clever (La niña y la farsa translates to the girl and the lie). This makes me sad because I KNOW animators who have made incredibly well-animated music videos alone, projects that took a long time from them. Take Bani-chan animating The Greatest Living Show all by herself. But any time someone, like in the case of this Boy and The Heron situation, lies about their works, it takes credibility from everyone who actually does animation projects alone. Now people have reasons to doubt actual animators.

31:34 I'm sorry, she lied about being credited under ufotable? Like *the* ufotable?? Studio that has made some of the most incredible animated fight scenes I've ever seen, for example in Fate/Zero? Out of all the supporting studios, she really had to pick the one that is an actual Japanese anime studio. XD

OH MY GOD THIS IS SO FUNNY "Yes I made a third of a film for one of the most famous animation studios in the world, but it was just a test and I had never animated anything in my entire life"
@enderkatze6129Күн бұрын
So, she says she made 25.000 frames, yes? And she said she worked 4 years, yes? And that she worked into the nights? Because, if that is true, she completed and finished up one frame, fully ready and inserted into the movie as is, in approximately 55 minutes. And that's assuming 16 hour workdays, working every single day of the year without fail. One, according to her fully handdrawn and edited, frame, with character, background, the movement matched to the previous frame perfectly, coloured, shaded In 55 minutes.

When we got the news about this woman, me, my classmates and teachers, who studied ANIMATION, started laughing. It was so obvious that she was lying. Even family members who know nothing about animation or the art area notice it was a fishy situation. the audacity of that lie
@jjartzlikeslamps18 сағат бұрын
I'm not even an animator myself, but I feel like anyone who knows how animation works in the most basic, bare bones level, would feel absolutely boggled hearing her trying to describe how her animation process went and that she animated multiple sections *by herself*.

It's not perfect, no art is, but it's makes me happy :-D" no clue why her vids do this, but it's definitely good lmao

Whats more frustrating than seeing someone lie, is seeing them throw more and more details onto said lies. Reminds me of me as a kid lying to my parents about going to friends after school instead of my ballet lessons. I made up this whole story of what we supposedly practiced...despite mom having the call that i didn't show up

Unbelievable… That someone has the guts of lying about such a big company where it is so easy to find out if it is or isn't true. It's so distasteful that she even tried to make the company look bad with not giving credit, and then trying to play the victim in her apology, even dragging her country into it. She got what she deserved. I feel so sorry for the company that she tried putting a bad light on them and anyone included that her friends believed her.

I only heard a little bit about the case, so I'm glad I'm getting treated to over an hour long video on it. It's great just hearing your voice again, and seeing you draw is soothing. ^^ Edit: Hm, I was always told not to use references, so tracing was just faaaar out of the question when I was growing up as an artist. I was also treated harshly, and saw what happened to my siblings when they were caught in a lie, so I was always terrified of lying and being caught. So I only ever tell harmless lies if I absolutely have to.

Great video, but I would avoid using "body language" going forward. It's incredibly pseudo-sciency and detracts from the actual facts of the situation. You said yourself that her bodily reactions seem very genuine despite the fact she's lying. Like, even when we tell the truth, if it's a awkward or tense situation we tend to fidget or stutter or shrink back. And people who know others erroneously rely on body language use this to their advantage to feign "perfect" body language. I'm glad you kept that segment short as it is a very weak and uncredible point. Otherwise great vid :D
@pondersprocket2274Күн бұрын
I would agree with you if I were using her body language to make a solid determination, like accusing her of lying *based* on that. However, since we already know that she *is* lying, the way that she responds to different situations where that lie is both being accepted *and* rejected is fascinating and she *does* react differently between the two.

I'll be honest, I studied animation and worked with other departments at my university (games, audio, graphic design, film) and I can assure you that graphic design/illustrators have the biggest egos in the industry. So much so that they lie, manipulate their way and pretend to know so much on things they never studied, almost like an obsession. This woman is giving me flash backs to those times and man it's obvious she knows nothing about animation.
