I had never played it until a few months ago. I bought a box of old broken down consoles to fix up and sell, a Dreamcast among them. It had a copy of Soul Calibur with it that had the data layer scratched so I had to buy another game to test it. Virtua Tennis was the cheapest thing for the system at my local retro game store. from a historical perspective Quake III is still a wonderful technical curiosity. Sure, you can play it better on PC today. But I find it fascinating how well the game looks-, and runs on the Dreamcast. (Much thanks to Raster Productions who utilized the hardware effectively) I remember owning a Riva TNT on my PC back then (140$ for the card alone in 1998), but the Dreamcast held up really well against it. The game showcases support of "fog effects", "multi-texturing" for things like metal surfaces, as well as "lightmaps" for baked shadows and dynamic lights... Many techniques which are actually still used in games today. Sure the game ran at a solid 30fps unlike many of Sega's own 60fps titles. But it doesn't make it less impressive. The tech at display was actually VERY impressive AND demanding for its time. With online-, and split-screen support together with PC-like performance, I can understand why people bought a mouse and keyboard for this game alone as a gateway into the world of premium PC gaming. :)

@PixelShade2 жыл бұрын
@@KrazyKupo That's true! And it also offered unique levels as well (Although these weren't very good). They were optimized for split-screen play (even four players). I think this is why the game has to be considered more than just a "port". It's a unique version of Quake III Arena, and Raster Productions basically rebuilt the engine to support native dreamcast features (without Windows CE or common tools at the time). adapting arenas for the different game modes, as well as textures for the insane hardware texture compression that Dreamcast offered (if used correctly the Dreamcast's 8MB VRAM could theoretically offer 64MB worth of texture memory)

No Sam Sho's or Metal Slugs made it to DC, but if you go the DC route for SNK games, make sure to get the Japanese versions. The US versions of Last Blade 2 or Garou Mark of the Wolves were either censored (white blood in LB2's case), or made the motor in your DC run super loud, and in MotW's case, the US version uses Terry's voice clips from the Real Bout series, while the Japanese version uses the proper voice clips from MotW. Last Blade 2's Japanese version has the blood, instead of the white milk seen in the US release. KoF 98, aka 99 Dream Match isn't all that hot (98 UM years later is the best port of 98 to have), but KoF 99 (aka Evolution), 00, 01, and 02 are fine on the DC, and were good enough in fact to be directly ported to the PS2 in Japan for KoF Nests Hen compilation, aka Nests Saga, which ports 99 Evolution, 00 and 01 onto 1 disc, along with their AES counterparts on the same disc. As far as I know, only 6 SNK games made it to the DC, though recently some of SNK's Atomiswave arcade games have been fanported to the DC, without the extras found in the PS2 console versions.

It lead to Bernie stating the saturn is not the future and the dreamcast was born. I guaranteed had sega did the right marketing it would've sold more than the n64 (34 million) and even twice with a powerful cleaner hardware. The ps1 did not stop the n64 having a successful run in the west and Europe. 33 million consoles sold and the mario 64 (11.9 million) outselling ps1 grand turismo (10.9). Had n64 used optical disc, it would've sold more units.

@@maroon9273 I agree. Marketing is everything. You can sell literally nothing by using good marketing. SEGA could have saved its hardware part by showing it off more to the customers. The twin-cpu obstacle would have driven developers away but still Saturn had some of the best games of its genre.

We would've seen 3D games being pushed to its limits during end of the 90s and the 00s if sega marketing was better during its earlier days. At least the n64, ps2, ps3 were able to push their hardware to its limits nearing the end of their systems lifespand. Same thing with the genesis. Genesis had a slump during 1993 to 1994 due western developers creating low quality engines instead utilizing dma channel on the gpu. Which is difficult to access due to the genesis exapansion unfriendly limited hardware. It took 9 years for the genesis to use software scaler scaling sprites (jurrasic park lost world) with sega cd add-on. Skies of Arcadia is, hands down, the single BEST game in the entire Dreamcast library. And that's a hill I'll die on. Even though I was around back then I will admit by the time the Dreamcast came out I had pretty much already given up on Sega. I did play it back then but only at friends houses. I didn't own my own untill 2020. I found it to be very expensive to try and collect for. The the games I want are the pricier ones. I HIGHLY recommend if you're just getting into Dreamcast do what I ended up doing. Get an original model with a 1 or 0 on it then get a GDEMU and a fully loaded SD card. I had to but my card off of eBay because I do not own a computer to make my own, but now I own EVERY game for it and am still on original hardware. Kinda spendy the way I did it but in the long run it was way cheaper than trying to buy all the disc I wanted.

@@costumeninja1914 you can only get a clone now. That's what I got. Your Dreamcast has to be an original one with a 0 or a 1 on the bottom. The GDEMU was only $45. So $200 all in if you already own the Dreamcast, and then you'll have every game.. I also bought a 3D printed tray to hold GDEMU down and hold the SD card.that was only $15.

Underrated game! Sonic Shuffle is pretty rough in some ways, compared to Mario Party, but it had some great ideas. I liked the added strategy of choosing which cards to use, and how to use them in navigating the board, even if it slowed the game down a bit. (And for a while, the Mario Party series completely eliminated this aspect, by putting everyone in the same vehicle! Boring!) It also gave extra rings to the winner who carried the team in a 1v3 match, which was nice. And the cheesy cutscenes, enemy battles, and Sonic's Room were all nice touches. But yeah, the loading... :( I should go back and see if Retroarch/Flycast has fast loading, as that would make a big difference. Oh, and the mini-game explanations are incomprehensible at times.

Unfortunately, the Dreamcast’s age is catching up to it. The GD-ROM drive is very vulnerable to breakdowns. The controller board has a design flaw in one of its resistors that will make using controllers impossible until you fix it. The power supply is very sensitive to clean connectors. Do your research before getting a DC. Fortunately, many of the DC’s problems are easy to fix. The GD-ROM can be replaced with a MODE (Multiple Optical Disk Emulator), which is better than the original GD-ROM anyway. The resistor is quite easy to replace even for novice repairs. The power supply problem is easy to fix with q-tips and alcohol. These simple problems can net you great deals if you know how to restore game consoles. I once got a “broken” DC, 2 controllers, 2 “non-working” VMU’s, and 5 Sega Sports games for only $30. The problem was simply replacing the controller board resistor. I got $100 worth of supposed junk for dirt cheap!

Great video as always! I disagree with some things for example, some ports from the ps1 were much better on the dreamcast, Dave mirra bmx was a master piece and didn't deserve to be on the list of bad games, other ps1 port that was better was Tony hawk 1 and 2, tomb raider last revelation, soul reaver, Dino crisis, alone in the dark new nightmare, urban chaos, even that there are barely no new things on the ports, the performance and resolution were much better and the experience was outstanding, I had all of ps1 ports to the dreamcast back then and I still played them these days, well, it's just my opinion and don't take it the wrong way, I love your content and never miss any videos, keep up the amazing work and greetings from Portugal

Those games are how they would look as ps1 games with the 3dfx graphics card on pc! They don't have any extra detail or anything in the 3d models, under the textures. He's not saying they are all crap but the were half arsed ports, they didn't do anything and that's a shame. Most of them are OK but they're pretty primitive compared to the real dreamcast stuff. I don't wanna disrespect the great Dave Mirras legacy, but that and urban chaos were stinkers. Soul reaver, Tony hawk etc were all awesome on ps1, and that's how it worked. They didn't have to change up the games but they could have least changed the models to what dc could do. Look at soul calibre!? Its a million times better than the arcade version, forget about the ps version! That was mind blowing at the time.

I am constantly surprised by how rare it seems to be someone who has had very extensive experience & knowledge with every single console since the NES. I could easily create one of the most knowledge rich KZbin channels out there if I really wanted to put in the work for it. It's difficult though to be able to relate to other gamers on KZbin when you have more experience than almost all of them. Makes it a bit difficult to join in with the community when you can't really have a discussion without feeling like you need to give a lesson or correct something someone is saying. That being said, being someone with that sort of experience & knowledge makes me appreciate channels like this that are made by others who clearly have deep experience with video games & know their stuff & also create deep, knowledgeable content. Even though I know all of these game libraries well, I highly enjoy videos like this for the Nostalgia trip alone. Few people mention it, but as the PS2 got all support a console could get in a lifetime, it's the true king of every genre. It has basically all the shoot 'em ups DC has plus a ton more and lots of exclusives like R-Type Final, Gradius VI, the fighting games are endless, it has not only compilations from SNK and Capcom, but other developers too, not to mention, again exclusives and arcade ports no other platform received. In every genre, it will undeniably win with spades. With a few exceptions, DC, GC and Xbox still were worth buying for their exclusives and sometimes, better versions. That was a great generation, like the 5th but even more competitive.
@gc3k2 жыл бұрын
There are a few DC games that are either exclusive (Border Down, Zero Gunner 2) or manage to run better than PS2 (Test Drive Le Mans, and I think Ferrari F355 Challenge). And because of PS2's dominance, some of those games are unfairly overlooked by the public, either back in the day or among the retro community today. PS2 was undeniably the best 6th gen console, but that was one generation where you were seriously missing out if you didn't own all 4 consoles Not PS2, but DC Sonic Adventure is better than the DX port for Gamecube

Yeah, this is about right. As a former owner of a Dreamcast (when it first hit stores), he is right on. The only thing I fault him is the sensitivity of the Dreamcast. The system can't handle dirt well and if cleaning goes neglected the eye can get covered, or worse (like in my case) the spinner under the eye can get jammed with dust and stop moving; thus preventing the eye from reading and/or the disc from spinning. But that took years for it to get like that, altho' it is a possibility. Nice video man-- complete facts.

I prided myself as being a great judge of game quality, & the Dreamcast library was fantastic, yet a system this good with so many great games was somehow failing in the gaming market.
