I went to a motorcycle course last year (planning on doing the same this year) here we played around with speed and emergancy breaking, first with 50 km/h then 60, 70, 80,90,100 and up to 150 .. it came as a surprise how good the breaks really are and how 10 km increase also increases the distance the bike travels before compleate stop ! .. from 60 to 70 .. huge diffrence ! .. this is one thing to keep in mind when on the road .. there are a huge diffrence if you travel 50 or 60 when it comes to breaking distance ! .. I learned respect for speed ... (my bike did not have abs so I locked up my rear break most of the time) .. impressed how a bike without abs and how hard it can break ...

I honeslty cant even tell a difference bcuz I never needed to use it but the thing is your not gonna know when u need it till it happens so I would still recommend it to new riders. Thanks for talking about gentle application of brake to load up the tire. Nick Ienatch (Champions Riding School) talks about "100 points of grip" and "Load the tire before you work the tire." That last statement has become my mantra on the road - not just for braking, but for accelerating and turning also.

All these videos from you and other experts on braking are great when things go right, but what about when they don't? Assuming you don't have ABS, what if one tire or the other starts to skid during emergency braking due to unseen gravel or an unseen slick spot or you just accidentally put on a bit too much brake due to fear of slamming into the car in front of you? Can you do a video on controlling a skid during emergency braking please? or point me to it if you already have one?

Rear break first, then before you even get to the floored out bottom of it while pressing.. front brake as DAn Dan instructed at the first minute and half of this video. Why? Simple Rear brake more gently but at fast enough speed sets up the forward motion of the bike towards front wheel. If the bike is already leaning forward towards the front wheel JUST before pulling in front brake, the front brake will be more effective without as much risk of the front end locking up. If I"m not mistaken, I got this from Fast eddie of Motojitsu.

I was wondering about the rear brake. I must have missed it in Dan's explanation. So basically this is the same concept of braking while riding a dirt bike, which I grew up on for years. Rear first and then front gradually. A lot of videos on YT seem to put emphasis on front braking, but I remember that if I did that on the dirt bike it would endo. I'd assume it would be the same on the road, especially on lighter bikes.

ABS EU Standard: If you pre-load the suspension and tire contact patch with ABS, it might make the bike break "to good" and the bike will tip over the handle bars, because (at least what we learn in the EU) ABS doesn't trigger when the sensor-wheel is going in reverse (bike tipping over). So with ABS it's better to make a quick firm break grip ~80% of the way in and keep it there in one shot. Not gradually squeezing.

Mr.DandanTheFireman, could you do a tutorial on how to do harder braking maneuvers whilst being leaned over. Pretty sure at that point your doomed I mean at slow 10mph speeds a slight rear brake drag helps slow speed and tighten turning circle but as to breaking in a corner is ridiculous because the wheels essentially need to spin in order to keep momentum else the bike will topple only thing you can do is shift more weight over and turn tighter to avoid or learn counterbalance a method used by US police on big bikes watch fortnine for more info on that but that’s me talking for facts and not actual experience

I've been riding for over a year in hectic traffic where I have to emergency brake pretty much daily. After an accident I had last year I learned how brakes really work (wish I had done it before lol). I go to a quiet-ish road at night and practice stopping from around 70-80 kmh. However, since I have no ABS and riding in full gear is impossible here due to extreme heat, I'm always reluctant to squeezing the front brake lever all the way. I think I get to around 85%. Assuming I do it gradually and allow time for the weight to shift forward, is it possible to lock up the front wheel this way ? I can stop quite efficiently I'd say but I'd love to be reassured I can use 100% of my front brake without ending up in the hospital after one of my practice sessions. Also, doing this sort of emergency braking in a corner is something I haven't practiced. Any tips on how to do it safely ? That's how I crashed. Spotted someone in the middle of the road in a corner, wasn't sure what to do, slammed on the front brake and that was it. I know I should be practicing it but it's difficult to find a good spot first of all plus the risk of things not going well is high I'm afraid. I just don't know how much pressure I can apply on the brakes without going down.

During emergency braking, do not clutch in before or during braking. Just close throttle as you squeeze the brake lever. Depending on situation, if you are going to come to a full stop, leave the clutch, when you close throttle, the engine brake will help slow down the bike. If you need keep moving, clutch in just before the engine stall.

its not slowly squeez your break 54321... that is wayyy to slow, and sub optimal for emergency breaking, its drop/compress your front fork to the max before applying full break force, takes about 1 to 0,5 sec, but time here shoulnt be the indicator, the compressed front fork is. Once the front fork is completly compress you have enough weith in to Know your limit, you never know your limit until you cross them. Brake until your front tire squeel or goes slithly sideway and imediatly release the brakes. test it multiples time on different tarmac and temperature and than you'll know the full capability of yurself and your bike in different condition.

According to the laws of physics, the brake acceleration (hence the distance) does not change depending on the weight if we can maintain enough brake power. Good braking means greater brake acceleration and believe it or not this SOLELY depends on the size of the friction coefficient between the ground surface and the wheel. We cannot change the asphalt, but we can use a tyre which has a higher friction coefficient with this road surface. That is why tyres with soft rubber compounds are good at braking and cornering. The forward shift of the load during braking mentioned on the video is an important information about braking. In saying all this, I assume that we already have a good brake equipment on the motorbike which will provide enough braking power and that we can well distribute the brake power between the front and rear wheels. For enthusiasts, Fnet = m.a = k.m.g / a (brake) = k.g / where m is mass, a is acceleration, k is fixed friction coefficient between two defined surfaces, g is gravitational acceleration which is almost constant on everywhere on earth.

I’ve heard motorcycle instructors say it’s better for emergencies to just pull in the clutch. Engine braking is more of a gradual effect and if you are really braking hard then it’s only going to help you for a very small amount of time.

@@jgruen9854 Possible true, to a degree, but consider the circumstances in which you would do an emergency stop. That short amount of time might only equal half a foot - but that might be the difference between swearing at someone for doing something stupid or bouncing over their bonnet.
@brodycaruso5394
@brodycaruso5394 5 жыл бұрын
The reason for this is to aid in braking. You can use your engine to aid in stopping. If you downshift and brake then you stop faster. Maybe if you see someone near you that could do something then you’d downshift then if they pull out you hit the brakes? I feel like i stop faster when i use the engine to aid the brakes. I think if you were stopping quickly though it wouldn’t help that much if you’re already going let’s say 70 mph. But if you’re going 40 and someone cuts you off and rather than pulling in the clutch just hit the brakes and pull the clutch in when you stop.

Here in the UK when comes to emergency stop we are told to roll off the throttle, brake front and back and only when about to come to a complete stop pull the clutch so the bike doesn’t stall. Not entirely sure but I believe you get a minor if you pull the clutch straight away.

Do u need to shift the gear to lower gear in emergency for e.g. you are on 4th gear and come down to 2nd gear

Nah I don’t think so cause if you got your clutch in it wouldn’t matter, as long as you remember to shift into first to set off again

Hey Dan, are you applying clutch before braking? Doesn’t that remove the engine braking efficiency and cause a coast?
@DanDanTheFireman
@DanDanTheFireman 5 жыл бұрын
I am pulling in the clutch. It removes power to the rear wheel which will help in braking. It will coast for that second you take to squeeze the front brake

DanDanTheFireman from uk here (and I’m taking lessons atm 😁) and our instructors advise the clutch goes in just before you stop so that the engine braking can assist. Not sure which method is more efficient? 🤷‍♂️

Depends if you downshift.. If you are in a high gear it won't help braking at all if you downshift while concentrating on emergency braking then it should help and obviously you pull clutch at the end to avoid stalling. I put pressure on the front then gently the back then try to gently pump the front to control the slide/stop. almost like abs should do. Then I also use cluthc because I shift down to be in 1st gear the moment I stop in case I have to pull away. If you focus on using the engine to brake it could possibly jerk if you make a mistake? Also if you shift down to fast the rear wheel lock? in my case so I prefer keeping clutch in while shifting down while braking. I'm no expert so only give my opinion though :) I ride a Honda CBX 250 so could be completely different from the big guns

also I think I wasn't completely squared up.. last second might have turned the bar a little bit and that's what got me to fly off the bike.

Actually, in case of emergency braking you should brake front & back without even thinking about pulling the clutch in until you're almost at a full stop!!! NEVER CLUTCH FIRST! This way you also make use of the engine brake. Ta da da 3 brakes stop you even more effective, at least 20% more quicker stop and more stable. I bet you your bike will not stall. It's Emergency Brake and anyway stalling my bike would be the last I would be embarrassed about. If your bike will stall... you just start it back on, don't you!? Ride safe!

Holy cow, let's explain: 1) engine brake applied only to the rear wheel 2) engine break on 6th gear doesn't help at all 3) it's very easy to skid rear wheel if you use rear wheel brake only. It's far more easier to skid rear wheel when using both brakes. still need the third brake? I don't think so

Dont give yourself too much to do at once. The brakes are most important. You can pull the clutch in and sort your gears as late as you like, you will be able to feel if its going to stall.

@@mattrowlands5751 same way I learned. Even when driving a manual car the brake and clutch went on together. Once I was stopped I would then sort out my gear.

I understand the video is geared more towards beginner riders, which is why I gave a thumbs up. However, when at high speeds, NEVER pull in your clutch! You will lose all engine breaking (which is more effective then that puny rear brakes we have). Rear brakes are effectively useless in an emergency. All the weight shifts to the front tire and the rear wheel has no weight, and no stopping power. Don’t pull in your clutch and focus on the situation and front break. If possible, down shift immediately so that engine breaking can be maximized. But DO NOT PULL IN THAT CLUTCH. Pull the clutch when almost at a stop so that you don’t stall.

You are going to get people hurt with your inexperienced advice. Emergency braking doesn't happen at 15 mph as you demonstrated. Don't listen to this guy. First thing you do is check your tire pressure. Go to an empty parking lot. Ride your bike at 30 miles an hour and apply equal brake pressure to the front and back. and repeat until you feel that you are comfortable with the front brake pressure. Majority of motorcycle accidents are T-Bone. Always wear a helmet, gloves and a riding jacket that protects the shoulder and elbows. If you ride a motorcycle you will go down. Be prepared.
