The doctor doesn't have to be attractive to be the Doctor. It's Steven Moffat's direction not Capaldi. He is a much bigger fan than David Tennant and Matt Smith combined. People hate this episode way too much. This was supposed to show how far the Doctor went for Clara, so this was meant to be for him to be out of character. I loved it from beginning to end, even though it tripped over a little in the middle. This scene was so emotional and in my opinion was probably one of Peter Capaldi's best performances in Doctor Who. It's sad Capaldi's leaving after one more season.

Dennis Lai 290 I've got only two problems with this episode. 1. Gallifrey shouldn't've been a part of it. 2. The general's regeneration. I wasn't a fan of Clara's exit in Face the Raven honestly. As a concept it was brilliant but the execution except for acting was cringeworthy. Her dialogue was great but the death scene. I took Hell Bent for what it was. a story about these two and it was a great one. Heaven Sent being one of the best eps in ALL of Doctor Who, leaving it open for a Gallifrey storyline, everyone was expecting somethin different.

Not in a Time-Ending Epic like 10, not in a Universe-War like 11, not because of absorbing the Time Vortex like 9. 12 went out saving a village. One single village. @@OliLinklater 13 is more human than in any of the other carnations, he’s the most vulnerable and relatable, Clara helped to show the pain grief brings people with the death of someone she loved, and 13 themselves proves that even when she does hurt him that he simply doesn’t want to spend the rest of time thinking of hate nor pain, he moved passed what is knowledge by gaining his inner humanity, Clara sacrificed just as much as him in the small span of a human life, albeit not physically, but more mentally, she was smart, fun and enjoyable to watch up until her leaving, sure she might be annoying but so were all the other companions in different ways, Clara might not be the best but she certainly has proven to be a great human companion that is relatable to most people on a sentimental level.

Which means that he sacrificed his own memories because he could never give up on saving Clara, but he could always trust her. To save the universe he had to give her up and trust her to do what he couldn't. Silly, sentimental old Doctor. It's sad, and it's beautiful.

Ahh, Clara! She’s the woman who still wants to hug him even with an older face and gruff persona. The woman who stopped him from destroying his planet, the woman who made him feel safe enough to be himself, flaws and all. Her opinion matters. He may not understand humanity as much this time around, but he’ll make damn sure he understands her in the way she seems to understand him. Just picture Twelve, the man who isn’t particularly bothered by what the vast majority thinks of him, making note of every thing he does that makes Clara laugh, the things that make her cross, and what she looks like in every instance. How the things he says and does impact those big eyes of hers. Imagine his confusion when they have their last hurrah on the Orient Express. He doesn’t even know what to make of her, because she’s combining her sad eyes and her warm smile, so what could that possibly mean? Just imagine how in Dark Water, he can’t believe that she thinks he cares for her so little that betraying him would make a difference. That her eyes are inflated and she’s frowning and she looks so defeated. After he’d been working so hard to reach her, to understand her, even if most humans didn’t make sense, because he’d always try, for her. She still doesn’t think he cares much about her, because he doesn’t twirl around the TARDIS or boop her nose like his younger self once did. But he takes note of every last movement that crosses her face, and every word she says, and cross checks them until they all fit together. Because they matter. His teacher, his friend. He cares a lot more than she could possibly know. And she thinks betraying him could make a difference. When he sees the old woman version of Clara in Last Christmas, she doesn’t look any different to him. Not really. Not necessarily because he’s blinded by adoration for this woman who has had such a remarkable impact on his life, but because her expressions are still markedly Clara’s, and they’ll never change no matter how many wrinkles she has. She’s just Clara, after all. When he fights so hard to rescue her back in Hell Bent, he doesn’t know how out of control he is until he stops and looks at her-really looks at her-and sees an expression he only ever saw when she faced the scariest of monsters. Her friend, making her scared. “Oh Clara Oswald, what am I doing?” He doesn’t much care for other people’s opinions of him. But Clara’s thoughts always matter, if only he can decipher the way they come across her face. She brings out the best and the worst in him, but the parts that will always stay with him are the very best-her kindness, her determination, her unyielding belief in his goodness. Because even when they challenge each other or question each other or don’t make sense to each other-their souls seem to recognize each other in raw, intimate ways. And they never stopped fighting to protect that, despite themselves! Twelve and Clara will go down as one of the best pairings in the history of Doctor Who!

Unpopular opinion. Bill had the worst ending. She felt abandoned for years and was converted into a Mondasian Cyberman. Yes Donna forgot the Doctor and their adventures but the second she remembered she would burn up instantly.While that is extremely tragic, there is a small possibility that she never remembers. Amy got to live out her life with the man she loved. Clara got to spend basically infinite amount of time having adventures before she had to go back to Face the Raven. Bill was shot in the chest and operated on for several years, all while thinking the Doctor would save her and unfortunately he didn't get there in time.

I stopped watching after the first episode of Jodie Whittaker (I gave her a brief chance. A fine actress I just didn't buy her as the role, I think they did her a disservice and miscast her). I'd be interested in hearing why people think they dumbed down the Doctor... was that when Capaldi took over or the last few episodes of Matt Smith?
@ShadeSlayer1911
@ShadeSlayer1911 8 ай бұрын
@@jessepage6575 You know how Tennant was a lot of people's favorite Doctor, and when Matt Smith was supposed to be his successor, people were very wary of his abilities to win them over. And then he did, all in his first episode too, because he did such a good job with playing the role and filling in the void that Tennant left behind? Similarly, the Ponds were a lot of people's favorite companions. Clara had such large shoes to fill when becoming the Doctor's new companion. However, unlike Smith proving his worth in a single episode, Clara...arguably...never proved her worth to fill in the shoes of the Ponds. She was in every way more boring than Amy and the man she dragged along, Danny, was an even worse attempt at Rory. She also had this undeserved ego about her that really bugged me. And then there's the fact that we missed out on the possibility of Dalek Clara or Victorian Clara only to have boring ol Contemporary Clara. That's probably another big reason why people dislike her. Both prior versions that Eleven met were far superior, and more interesting to have around as companions, yet they killed them off just to have the most boring version we could have gotten. IDK what they were thinking with that one. Why couldn't we have something else other than a modern day companion for a change? To start with Victorian Clara and Dalek Clara, then turn them down for Contemporary Clara, you'd really have to do some phenomenal storytelling to convince people that such a trade made sense. And they didn't. Again, she was boring compared to the potential of the other two versions. She did a piss poor job convincing us that we didn't somehow miss out by not having the other two instead. Arguably, it might have been better to not have introduced Dalek and Victorian Clara at all. Then we wouldn't know what we were missing. Oh, and Clara straight up mistreated the Doctor on a number of occasions. She throws a tantrum at him when he doesn't deserve it during the Moon Episode, and she betrays him for bargain bin Rory. She kinda does this thing where she challenges fan favorite characters like Vastra without earning it, what with that Veil conversation. You know, Rory did a lot to earn respect from the fandom. The man died more than once and guarded his wife for 2000 years. He earned the right to punch the Doctor in his smug face. Clara did not earn the right to explode at Vastra for judging her for what she was. The hard thing about writing characters, especially for a legacy series like DW, is that you have to make your characters EARN their moments, especially those moments where they challenge older characters. You can't just give them a cool moment out of nowhere, otherwise it's going to feel like unearned bias. Even her jumping into the timestream to save the Doctor, at least for me, still felt somewhat unearned. It speaks volumes when some of fans' favorite moments with Clara is when people call her out on her shit and dished out some humility to her. My favorites happen to be when Vastra asked Clara what is the Doctor's name, and River reveals that she knows it, and the other one is when Strax examines her and says that she has unchecked narcissism. Now, maybe it would have been way better if the series had more with that sort of thing. You can have this egotistical naraccistic character, and then have a series where she's constantly challenged and being taught humility. It only happens a handful of times for Clara, not nearly enough to balance her out. She definitely had potential to be a solid companion, and in many ways she was. But she also dropped the ball on being a good follow-up companion to the Ponds. It's not even necessarily all her fault either. The Ponds were just that good, that beloved by both the Doctor and the fandom.

Moffa tmay have his problems, But I do genuinely care for all the companions he gave us... Amy: The girl who waited, not wanting to grow up, but does so, in the end, to live with Rory full time in the past. Clara: The impossible girl, the girl who helped him to make some of the right choices in his life, the Control freak meeting the uncontrollable. She also wants to prove herself, proving that she can be like him, but she went too far, and that was her downfall.And the Doctor went through hell just to get her back, even wiped his own memories. Bill: The student, a curious mind but kind, Not as strong as the other but 12 never really cares, she likes to ask questions, like a student should, and is strong-willed. Even with the weaker one like Bill, I still feel the connection of her and 12, it was nice and then World Enough and Time happened. These 3 hold a place in my heart along with the others, Mainly Donna and Clara.... A little fun fact too: Clara is kind of a what if for Rose, like we see in Series 2 she's willing to stay with the Doctor rather than her own mother, so if circumstances come, she might meet the same fate as Clara if she wasn't trapped in another universe.

Part of the Doctor's motivation behind wanting to save Clara that desperately is carried over from his previous incarnation. 11 had already let two versions of Clara die in front of him before, and as he would admit, it was his fault to some extent. When 11 met modern Clara, he didn't want her to die in front of him yet again because of his actions. This carries over to his next incarnation after 11 regenerated. Though 12 may not look it, deep down he still has that thought within him, wanting to ensure that Clara doesn't die because of him. Just like in Last Christmas when the Doctor discovers that Clara has grown old, he regrets not coming to Clara earlier because Clara was most likely going to pass away soon, until Santa hints to the Doctor that it's still another dream. And now, 12 sees Clara die in front of him in Face the Raven, and he knows it is partly his fault again as well, because he had an indirect part in it by saving Ashildr in the first place. He had unintentionally made the same mistake that he had done in his previous incarnation, and the thought of it probably pushed him to the breaking point where he was willing to go to extreme lengths to rectify this grave mistake. I can understand Hell Bent being an episode focusing more on the Doctor and Clara's relationship rather than the Doctor himself wreaking havoc on Gallifrey; that one scene alone of the Doctor facing off against Rassilon was enough to prove how much dominance the Doctor had over Gallifrey as a respected war hero, and it also further cements the Doctor's status as "the man who could turn an army around at the mention of his name" (or in this case, his mere presence). I feel this episode serves as a decent wrap up, while at the same time having a nice little nod to the earlier Impossible Girl story arc in series 7B: one of the main reasons the Doctor got so interested in Clara in the first place was because of the earlier mystery surrounding Clara; in order for the Doctor to move on fully from Clara, the only way was to wipe it clean off his memory.

Consider the character arc of Peter Capaldi's Doctor. From "Why this face" to realizing that you save the ones you can. From being willing to destroy the universe to save Clara to the conversation with Bill "You said you would save me" "Yes" "Were you lying?" "No" Were you right?" "No".

You know i just realised something by watching this clip. Clara is the only one that i know of that the Doctor forgets. He hasn't forgotten anyone before. He even revisits some of them as ten before he regenerates. But never forgot anyone he ran with, did he ? I might be wrong though because I haven't seen the Classic Who but at least in the new series he hasn't really forgotten anyone. And that makes this moment, for me at least, that much more heartbreaking. I loved Clara and seeing her disappear this way is way too emotional even for this show.

People hate on this episode wayyy tooo much. I've seen people complain about Gallifrey not being the forefront, or hating Clara, or hating that she was brought back, or saying that this somehow proved that the Doctor cares more about Clara than the rest of his companions. So I'm gonna attempt to answer these complaints. Here goes. 1. 12 is a particularly vulnerable Doctor. He spends season 8 distancing himself from everyone, being grumpy and an all round annoying person. But when he finally let's his guard down in Death in Heaven, he's ready to go to hell because he can't bear to see his companion in distress. Then in Last Christmas he is willing to go to great lengths to save his companion and even the dream base's scientists. He even pleas with her to come back to the Tardis. This vulnerable side is on full display in Series 9. He spares Missy even after she tried to get him to kill Clara, he shows Davros mercy in a way only he could. He even developed a quick fond relationship with Cass in Under the Lake. But then comes the bombshell. He literally brought Ashildr back to life because he considered himself responsible for her death. This man is vulnerable, more so than all the other Doctors, even if he tries to hide. He was always going to fight to bring Clara back. Even in series 10, Bill is extremely important to him. He literally kind of brings her back to life twice in Oxygen, causing himself to go blind. He even tries to reverse the Cyberman Bill, which he knows is impossible. This is the Doctor who cares the most. 2. His desperation and fear of losing his companions has been building up all the time. 10 started on this path in the Waters of Mars. After losing Donna, and Rose, he decides to fight time itself to save Adelaide. Then 11 is furious at the universe for taking the Ponds away from him. Clara is the one who restores his faith, similar to Rose after the Time War. 12 just reached the Saturation Point. This was when he said, no more, to the universe. No more deaths. No more friends lost. He became the Time Lord Victorious once again. His frustration and anger at the Universe manifesting in his desperation to save Clara. Thus, he decides that he would never endure the loss of a companion again. 3. 12 loves Clara. Yes. This has been in the making. Clara was the one who rejuvenated his curiosity and faith after losing the Ponds. She saved him in the Dalek Asylum, she saved him countless times in the Name of the Doctor (I'm glad this was retconned in Time of the Doctor). He even accepts that he fancied her in Deep Breath. They are two companions who have always pushed each other, the only pair apart from 10 and Donna who have travelled as equals. He loves Clara in a much deeper way than humans can comprehend I think. It isn't romantic, it isn't sexual, it isn't brotherly. It is a deep connection of trust and commitment. They most likely say this to each other in the Cloisters, the part we never see or hear. So it is no surprise that he'd save her. He has a Duty of Care to her. 4. Gallifre should never be the forefront of an episode. Then we get a boring ass episode with old, self righteous and pompously arrogant men bickering over trivial matters (yes that description includes the Doctkr too). Only Trial of A TimeLord was an interesting episode, and that too cos it was about the Valeyard. Classic Who has always tried this, Gallifrey, is boring. So, there it is. Long comment, i know, but necessary, i think. Binging 12s run helps in comnecting more to these stories I think, cos they're much more thematically connected than the rest

His reasoning to forget or be forgotten is true and quite sad, it's unfortunate to waste the majority of your lifetime to bring someone back that is worth half the lifetime of the universe, but fortunate that you are able to forget and move on as you sometimes need to release that one thing you want to hold onto so badly, to make room for more things to remember, they might not be as heavy as the one you had to let go, but it can be as close to it as possible

I LOVE Clara, unlike all the previous companions, her plot relevance is not saving the Earth (Martha), the universe (Rose, Donna), or clearing her mind and her own life while traveling with the Doctor (Amy-Rory), and it is that Clara, EXISTS to help the doctor (literally, more considering The Name of the Doctor). This is seen everywhere, from the prequel episode of The Bells of Saint John, with a Clara of about 9 or 10 years, to the Clara we see in this episode, who even in her last moments, cares about The Doctor more than any other companion, before worrying that she is about to die. If you think about it, she is the first partner of her kind (I've only seen the modern series), and it is that Rose or Donna, they left everything behind, and then, they had their regrets and doubts, Martha was able to move away before the situation got worse, while Amy also left everything to go with the Doctor, but she took the most important thing in her life with her, and that was Rory. But Clara, Clara in the beginning, was a kind of weekly companion, who tried to lead a normal life and travel with the doctor at the same time; Then the Danny Pink thing happened, and yes, it affected her a lot (something like Martha and her family in series 3), but then she traveled with the doctor again, and each time she was a character more and more stronger. And yes, Clara's death at first was a bit disappointing, but the twist that comes after is something unique and fantastic, only the hand of Steven Moffat could achieve it She has been (in my opinion) the best companion, and the best to understand the Doctor, that of Matt Smith, but especially that of Peter Capaldi. Well, she said so, "Clara Oswald for the win" PD: her outfits were very cool, I liked them a lot

After all this time we finally returned to Gallifrey, we saw Rassilon stand of with The Doctor, and those last scenes in the original TARDIS with The Doctor dressed kind of like Hartnell just made it for me. I actually hope that Chris Chibnall's new Doctor wears a Hartnell-esque costume and the TARDIS is the original. I seriously do not understand why some people hate Clara. After the 11th Doctor stucked in Trenzalore for almost 900 years and regenerated into 12th Doctor, he became less humane, less compassion, grumpy and mean. It's Clara that brings back his humane side again. And he only has Clara by her side, giving his grumpy as hell attitude. Of course the Doctor will breaks all his rules to save Clara, not only because he cares about her, but also because he was betrayed by the Time Lords. Tricking him into this Raven adventure just to let him confess about the Hybrid, literally imprisoned him for billion years, who wouldn't be angry with that? The Doctor is lucky enough to have Clara to stop him becomes a monster/warrior. Given a normal human being betrayed by his own people and imprisoned for so many years, he/she will turn nuts and insane. I can totally understand the storyline here and I personally think that it was well written.
