The Dodgebaker! Studebaker Gasser Build with 440! | Not Rod Ep. 4

The guys get started working on a 1950 bullet nose Studebaker soon to be a full fledged Drag Race Car! First and foremost was to see if the original 6 cylinder would run. After encountering fail on that front it was time to get to work on cutting, grinding, welding and a whole lot of dirt diving to make this thing resemble an authentic 60's gasser.

Nice!!! I'm building a 59 Studebaker lark gasser with a full cage.. I'll be interested to see how this build goes. BTW its a lot easier to just buy some 440 fenderwall headers and adjust your motor mounts to make them fit, than it is to fab custom headers from scratch or modify existing ones.. i used fender headers from a jeep and the worked perfectly.

Very cool...you will probably find another small round heater core behind the dash, it's for the defroster... I'm doing a 50 Studebaker Champion Starlight Coupe similar to yours. Mine is going to be low with a slight nose up look, rear wheel wells opened up and engine is being set back 10 in. so the carbs will be at the base of the windshield. Engine is a 327 Chevrolet with all the go fast stuff, tunnel ram w/2 650 Holleys , zoomie type headers, scatter shield, M22 "Rock Crusher" trans, rear end is a Dana 60 with spool and 4:10's, race axles, s10 leaf springs w/floaters and sliders and truck arms being used for ladder bars and triangularly mounted and adjustable. For the front it's a 4in. dropped tube axle w/coil overs and four-bar, front steering and on and on , have all the parts it's just starting to go together...just going to be a go to town car..seeing your bit there got me fired up so out to work I go..I can't wait to see more..

My grandfather probably built those cars he worked at Studebaker from 1950 until they closed my whole family is from south bend.. Beautiful cars

Your having fun and not one dog was hurt in the filming of this episode. I for one (72 year old delinkwent ) would thrive in this environment. I even put words in that google can't unscramble in one to ten tries. After cutting a huge hole for the tires to fit in the back think it looks better. I wouldn't go with fender flares. I would use old burring barrels cut to fit and welded in so the rubber coming off the tires is just rubbing against them. I hope this doesn't influence your final thinking as it is art work in motion

I always dug these. There was one parked in the woods down the road from where I live, parked in the woods since the 60's, from the look of it. Pretty roached, unfortunately, it got sent to the scrapyard a few years ago, with other 50's cars.

I would love to build a 50 studebaker. My grand pop had one back in 54-55 he had an olds v8 in it bored balanced high compression and a hydro stick transmission if I’m correct. Also a 54 Pontiac rear axle. From what I understand his stude hauled ass!!! I couldn’t tell you what I’d give if I could find HIS old bulletnose. My family has been working on/building cars for 3 generations now and believe me. I’ve built some absolutely wicked cars but a 50 stude would be tha cats ass🤘

As a Mopar 440 and Gasser fan I'm going to be hanging on, looking for each & every video of this project... can't wait. I've always been a Ford, Mopar guy and I still regret getting rid a a B/G 63 Falcon I had, kinda radical engine set back (interior edge of dashboard was where firewall was) tilt fiberglass front, straight axle, 9 inch ford radiussed wheel wells in back. The car had never been finished, however it did' have nice 2X3" tubing frame up front, the tin work, firewall looked as if Al Bergler did it. but no subframe connecters, or roll cage of any kind... My plan was a 390 GTA engine and trans and street drive it!

can make the scoop from the hood of the other car cut and section the front part of it , turn it around so the opening is in the front and then cut it to fit the hoodshape of the hood on the car and weld it on

#1 plug can go about 10" behind the front spindle if you didn't change the wheelbase. 10% of the wheelbase for gas class back in the day.

Again guys cool build, also the way your going about it , actually wrenching it apart dirt and all in moreless the dark ..that's the way I do it except you at least are in a building , I'm in my driveway and I live in Oregon...just across the Columbia River and east of Longview Wa. So you guys know what the weather's like in the area.. Anyways I just watched the episode again , and I'm curious to what your doing for your rear springs, I saw something about a Dana 60 and you show cutting the wheel wells and the rear wheels on but no mention of suspension set up...probably in the next episode? It's just where I'm at with mine at the moment, what I am going to do about springs. I'm running a Dana 60 also , sort of ,60 center, new tubes with ford ends, spool, custom axles, 11" ford drum brakes, long ladder bars mounted with the front mount inwards, housing floaters, the original springs are in good shape but they are only 1 3/4" wide ..I just got some s10 springs , 3 pack, main ,2nd and the third is the thick overload leaf, thinking replace it with a same thickness as the other two. Just curious to what you come up with.. Getting dark got to go pick up things and move into the kitchen... #2 work area when it gets dark or nasty outside.

The tire is just in the wheel well in that episode but it kinda has one in it now. D60 spool 35 spline axles and long ladder bars. Im thinkin ill use the original springs but havnt decided how it will attach yet, maybe sliders or possibly a shackle design like quarter elipticle. Youll have to make it out to riverdale when yours is done.

Stock short block w/ comp. valve job, blend work by me (rookie) and a 284-484 Hemi Grind cam & lifters (Direct Connection) Weiand open plenum manifold and an 850 Holley, lotta fun! Sometimes that works but we were kind of anxious to get to work on the gasser, and with all the water that looked like it went down the motor we figure those cylinders are probably packed full of rust.

I hope you realize that on a pretty much stock engine that tunnel ram is actually going to kill power not gain power. You are better off just running a single 800cfm 4brl. Tunnel rams do best with huge cams, high compression and massive ports. Now stack injection on the other hand... much more forgiving. (but incredibly expensive.. unlike a Ford there is no cheap Aussie knock-off Hillborn kit for it)
