Ohtani's contract should of been 2 billion with what they've been able to build just for signing him. But respect to the Dodgers for using all that cash revenue to make the team better instead of pocketing it all.

my favorite part of the Tanner Scott deal is that Evan Phillips gets to go back to being our fireman. 7/8/9 is Kopech/Treinen/Scott but when it's the 6th inning and the starter just loaded the bases with 1 out, Phillips is getting out of that. it's where he's best and it's where he dominated in 22

I personally have the D-Backs second in the NL West this next season. People forget that the D-Backs were also nipping at the Dodger's heels last season. The thing was, the Dodgers went into a 4 game series in Arizona and won the series 3-1 at the end of August/start of September. I think the lead was 3 games coming into the series. It was a high-octane series, but the Dodgers managed to scrape by despite losing Kershaw in the second inning of the first game and had to throw an impromptu bullpen game. It was no easy series by any means.

The Dodgers also have a TV deal that pays them far more than any other team's TV deal, and because of the current media landscape, no team will ever again sign a similar deal. They have that structural advantage on top of the Ohtani-related income.

There’s no rule against any other team spending as much money as the Dodgers to improve their team. The Yankees did it for years. The main issue I think many fans have is they’re upset with the all of the players that only want to sign with the one or two top teams every year. It’s like college football before NIL. Alabama and Ohio state got most of the 5 star recruits every single year. Human nature is to want to be on the top team that has the best perceived chance to win. It stinks if your team is not one of them.
@Jukeboxster4 күн бұрын
why is the justification for what the Dodgers are doing to point back to other times when the system showed it was broken? Yankees took advantage of a broken system. Bama took advantage of a broken system. The dodgers are just the latest. But when there's no baseball in a couple of years because there's a lockout, remember how you were cheering this on.

@ oh I don’t think the system is good at all. I’m a St. Louis fan. Nothing but greed is stopping the Dewitt’s from spending more money to make the team better. There are a lot of teams in Major League Baseball that bring in enough revenue to compete with the Dodgers in spending, but they want the profit instead. Good for their business, but their fans take the hit.

And thank you for the critiques of the Cubs. They are led by an fo that refuses to do anything unless the spreadsheets say "yes" and that continue to ride on the coattails of a World Series win that's almost ten-years old. Their owner also treats the organization as a real-estate development company first and a baseball team second. They refuse to act like a big, wealthy club.
@Jonny0nline4 күн бұрын
Great show guys. But we can't act like the Dodgers weren't looking for a high leverage reliever all offseason and were connected to Tanner since last year. This wasn't them flexing on the league. It was them probably waiting to see if Roki signed before they committed that money to Tanner and not another starter like Flaherty if Roki doesn't sign.
@Objectivity-w5j4 күн бұрын
Jonny...the only problem with your reasoning is that it's too logical for many people who are upset with the Dodgers 🙂. They're thinking..."what do you mean the Dodgers are taking "advantage" of a system that MLB and the Players Union agreed on" and "what do you mean all the other teams can take advantage of that same system IF they were smart enough to manage the money in such a way that the players and team benefit from it???" That's STILL unfair in their eyes and we need a salary CAP!!! 🤣 The real problem here is jealousy of the Ohtani signing. That signing afforded the Dodgers the resources and flexibility to make all those moves and unfortunately for 29 other teams.......there is only ONE Ohtani.

Two 24-season-long eras of MLB: 1941-1964 and 2001-2024. Era One: Yankees go to the World Series 18 times, win 12. Era Two: Dodgers go to the World Series 4 times, win 2 (unless you’re a hater in which case it’s 1) Remind me: did baseball survive the harrowing Yankees dynasty?

The Sasaki evaluation seems excessively low for a guy with results as elite as his were. By some models he had 2 complete outlier pitches at the WBC where he was sitting 100 and a slider that stuff+ was also very high on. If his fastball returns to 2023 form I think “Hunter Brown” and “Sean Manaea” are very fair Y1 comps

Next CBA there needs to be an update that deferred money is worth the same under the CBT Threshold. If Ohtani is fine with making 2 million a year and 68 deferred per year that’s cool but the Dodgers should not be getting a break on the tax for that. It should be counted for playing years only and count full. So if you want to defer 68 million, that’s fine and you can pay that as normal in deferrals but that money should count as 70 per year he is under that contract on the CBT with the Deferral years having no standing on the CBT number in the future. Ohtani broke the system with that contract. Honestly MLB should’ve stepped in for that because it is just a ridiculous overreach
@ajalvarez31116 минут бұрын
The whole league gets that “break.” So that’s not really an effing break. The teams that share in the luxury tax pool aren’t doing shit with that money except pocketing it. Why do you want to give guys that aren’t improving the game even more free money? At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what rule changes you put in place, the Dodgers will adjust fast and better than everyone else so they will still have the advantage. Lastly, notice the Dodgers are ramping up and stocking up now…before any rule changes come out of the new CBA.

I'm curious how you all feel about Alejandro Kirk? Obvious, obvious bias coming from a Jays fan, I know he's one of the worst baserunners in the league with almost zero pop, no arguments against that. However, he has been one of the best defensive catchers in the league for the past 3 years, consistently bringing good framing and good blocking skills behind the dish, and even being very good at catching steals in 24. His offense isn't great, but it's not abysmal for a catcher either, with a 96 wrc+ in 23 and a 93wrc+ in 24. I'm not trying to argue that he'll go back to how he was in 22, when he looked like he might be one of the best in the league, but I feel that the disappointment in not reaching that year again has made him underrated. Love the podcast!
