He has such a calm unflustered demeanour. Well done, for showing this dog that biting doesn't work and in the end calm submission is all good.

Jun, don't listen to all these jerks saying mean and nasty things. You were very kind and patient with Sunshine. His life was probably Hell before his new mommy got him. I adopted a Maltese last December. I groom him myself because he doesn't trust people. It took him a long time to trust me. He still won't let me near his mouth or feet without a fuss, but he never bites. My vet has me give him Benadryl. It helps. Sunshine is so very stressed that he should be sedated because it is just too much for him. I'm sure he has been through enough stress in his life. But you did great with him. I would like to have seen you do the head and seen the end results. Keep up the good work.

Olivia Hardin Wow! Thank you so much for your kind words! Comments like yours help motivate me to keep doing what I love to do most, groom dogs so they can be comfortable in their own skin. Is your maltese doing better during his grooming session? We recently came across a tip that may help although we have not personally tried this yet. But we heard giving a fearful/aggressive dog 1 melatonin pill, he should calm down so you are able to groom him. If you try the pill, please share your experience with us! Thank you so much for your support!

You said he is 14 yrs old - chances are good he's got joint pain adding to his problems. I will say you handle him very gently, good job on that! Poor little guy is so freaked out. I wouldn't even try to comb him out for the prep, I'd be using better clippers (Andis are faster and cut better and are also quieter) and go over him with a 7F. He doesn't seem to mind the clippers as much as the pulling on his coat. Also, I agree that using a regular grooming noose would allow you to hold him a little tighter without the concern of him choking. In any case thank you for your care for this little dog and, yes, some of them are just like that and some are ruined by even one bad experience.

You are so very gracious with some of these comments. I'm a groomer too. I love your calmness and gentle handling of the dog. It's difficult to keep calm as groomers also get scared and frustrated. We are human. The most difficult part is to keep the dog from hurting himself trying to snap at you or get away from you. You handled this dog well while getting a very needed grooming done. I would just suggest skipping the combing and just clipping everything short with a snap on comb for safety. Great show of patience and kindness!

***** Thank you so much! You're absolutely right. Not all dogs that behave badly have been abused. We forget that they have their own thoughts and feelings, and we don't always know what's going on inside their furry little heads ;-) Some dogs just don't like being messed with, just like some people don't like to be touched. Then there are other dogs that won't stop hugging and kissing on you while you groom them.

I wish I could find a groomer like you. It is so important for the young dogs to have positive experiences the first few times at the groomer. It sets the stage for a lifetime of haircuts. My geriatric poodle had become arthritic and for the last three or four years of his life I groomed him myself. He would come home stiff and on occasion he would actually limp for few days. (I did a pretty good job, it just took several days) Too bad I am in Southern Georgia.

Hey there! I am a dog groomer as well...I've been grooming for 3 years. Alot of people don't realize the work and struggles we go through when it comes to special needs dogs and/or aggressive dogs. I wanted to let you know that you did a good job working on sunshine! The best tactic you used was the cone! I actually never thought of using one on any of the aggressive dogs that I've worked with and NOW that I saw it used I am going to try it out! :-) One thing I noticed is that Sunshine got away from you and fell/jumped off of the grooming table ultimately leading to him hanging himself for a few seconds. To prevent that event from happening either with him or another dog that comes into the shop, you could have another person wearing the same gloves help you keep the dog on the grooming table. Team work sometimes is the best work. Dogs like sunshine still must be groomed otherwise other health risks can develop. Unfortunately it is a stressful process on the dog. So It's a catch 22. The best advice to offer is to talk over the risks with the owner and to come up with a plan that suits sunshine. Sometimes with aggressive dogs at least with some I have worked with, I've asked the owner to stay with me and help control the dog. It can help especially if the owner is aware and understanding of their dogs behavior. However, it can back fire at the same time if the owner does more worrying than helping...so again it's a catch 22. Just keep using your best judgment and go from there! Thank you so much for having the patience to work with a boy like Sunshine that really needs a caring and understanding groomer!!!
@JunTheGroomer110 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for such a thoughtful comment, Krystyn. I really appreciate it, and I agree with everything you said. You're completely right, and thank you for the compliment! Believe it or not, I've been grooming for about 4 years now, but that's including the time I was only a bather so actual grooming time is only about 3 years. I had a lot of self-doubt and some insecurities about making this channel. I thought, what qualifies me to help anyone else with grooming issues? What if people don't like what I have to share? I'm not qualified, I don't have enough experience - some dogs still scare me! Then I realized that I wanted to help people and their dogs because I love people and I really really love their dogs! When we come from a place of love and the only intentions we have are to help and to love, all fears and doubts seem to just vanish into thin air. I realized that there is no way I could "fail" and there was nothing to be afraid of because Love is the most powerful force in existence. As dog groomers we are engaging in a labor of love - we are love in action! We are the most powerful force in the universe because that's what is inside of us when we act out of love. Thank you for being a dog groomer - and more importantly, thank you for being a good person. The same light that is inside of me, beating my heart and keeping me alive and conscious, is inside of you as well. I honor that light - Namaste.

Kind of like choreographed dancers. They're all doing the same moves but all the dancers make the moves uniquely their own. I have a toy poodle that is 12 now, I've had him since he was 2-3 months old. He behaves just like this while being groomed. He is not abused and never has been. He is the little love of my life. I don't know why he behaves like that though. He hates loud noises so maybe it's the clippers? He barks at my alarm clock and timer on the stove. I just groom him in stages so he isn't stressed out for a long time.

This dog is old and learned long ago that sudden movements mean disaster for him. Some groomers also fail to consider that a dog may have pain from old fractures and injuries. A simple squeeze on the leg could be agony.. Maybe he won't let go during a bite because of what happened to him in his former home once he did let go. I admire Jun for taking his time and understanding that the dog's behavior is learned, not personal.

This dog reacts exactly like my toy poodle Samson. Samson has never been abused. We have had him since he was 6 weeks old or so. I love him like crazy, but he is almost impossible to groom. I have never even tried taking him to a professional groomer because I fear he will bite them, as he has bitten me. I like the leather glove idea! I'll use that next time. It takes me several hours to get him clipped,, doing it in installments. It is very stressful for both of us. Samson is almost 9 years old and it never gets any better with each time. I have tried soothing, treats, calm voice, gentle brushing, introducing him and letting him check out the tools, nothing makes it better. I just think some dogs are neurotic for unknown reasons.... Poor babies. He acts as though I'm torturing him. It's really EXACTLY like this pooch. When we're done, he's just a happy little boy running around like nothing happened, and I'm a basket case! LOL Although, reading through the comments, I happened upon Carol's. I did accidentally nick Samson slightly with the clippers when he was a pup. :( Perhaps that is all it took to ruin him. I will look into possible sedation for next time.

We personally have not used it yet but we were told 1 melatonin pill will help calm a fearful aggressive dog without making him drowsy. We hope you have found or find a solution to make grooming a more pleasant bonding experience for you and Samson. If you try the pill, let us know how it worked for you.

I've been grooming for 20+ years and learned the only gloves a dog or cat can't bite thru are welding gloves. You can feel pressure tho. Akso I don't let the dog bite on my gloves, cause older dogs can very easily break a tooth or have one fall out. I always use a muzzel; but only if i have to. Dogs need to learn at there first grooming you are the boss and they are not to bite. But I also totally understand that a dog has feelings and he might not feel like being groomed that day, or just grumpy, so I talk to all of them as if they were my child and at the end of the day, I never forget to tell them how good they were and how pretty they are.
@JunTheGroomer19 жыл бұрын
Lexy Merrick I really like that! I completely agree that dogs have their own individual personalities and moods. I've heard that even show dogs are sometimes pulled out of competition simply because they are having a bad day. I also agree about the muzzle, and I was concerned about him hurting his teeth. But we tried a muzzle on his first visit and that did not go well at all. Unfortunately, this was the safest way that I could think of other than sedation. I did recommend that he does get sedated for his future grooms though because it took over a week for him to physically recover from the experience. I could imagine him feeling like an 80 year old man would after wrestling with a young man for a couple of hours. He was beat! LOL! I love your approach, and thank you so much for the feedback.

A past experience, this dog was used a muzzle but the grooming was going even harder. When a pet gets scary, it poos and pees are normal. That is why we suggest a groomer has a person with you when the grooming is ongoing, that person could be a pet owner (in this particular dog) or your assistant. (four hands are always better than two hands) This arrangement is for compassion and for the better control purposes (clean up a messy table). A right leash of a grooming table is important for you to control him, (yours is a walk-dog leash) if it's necessary trying to hang his head straight up, a pet might be resulted in more alert and sit still. Put a secure hook on the pole,;a pet would not fall off from the table (it will cause an accident) and also he cannot bite you when you are managing its body. If you know the dog a bit, please try to find a right time to groom its face ASAP because a bitten dog who almost always has a relaxed time for a groomer to do difficult spots. To apply gloves for protections are fine, but sometime they make your hands inflexible or cause pets injured by blades, find the thin leather gloves when a pet has been tied up probably. Besides, a groomer should be aware his arms as well. Simply saying, right tools, right moments and speeding up grooming time.

Great work! Now I'm curious about the first video... is it online?
@JunTheGroomer110 жыл бұрын
I actually took down the first video because it ruffled too many feathers. I never intended to offend anyone, but it really offended a lot of people. A very brave and helpful groomer sent me a private message to let me know that there was a group of groomers forming a group to try to come after me. The video was never meant to create such a reaction so I took the advice of the helpful messenger and took the videos down. I believe that it is always better to avoid confrontation whenever possible. "It is better to be kind, than to be right." Dr. Wayne Dyer

You have so much patience and you handled this dog really well people commenting here about you not handling it well i think have never really groomed a dog that aggressive and old.. i think u were really good, i love all your videos and this dog is really old so it would have anesthesia risks involved and that would risk its life way more.. and about the aggressiveness? why don't you muzzle the dog? however thank you for all you videos :))

krish k Thank you so much for this comment! It's so encouraging :-) I actually tried getting a muzzle on him the first time I tried to groom him, but that didn't go so well. He flipped out and went #1 and #2 all over my table while doing crocodile spins! It was crazy and we had it up on this channel for about a year before we had to take it down because it was causing too much of a negative reaction. So long story short, we decided not to use the muzzle on him anymore. LOL!!! Thank you so much for watching!

I wish i could know if you had a shop and if you did where it is at. I have watched your videos and especially with this little guy as he is the same kind of dog as mine. Honestly I would really trust you with my dog. I don't understand why some people gave you grief about the first video wish i could have seen it. But dealing with and aggressive dog is not easy and many organizations as much as they would like to say that they are all humanity aggressive dogs are the first to be euthanized. Everyone is like an iceberg you can see only the outside but underneath you won't see the struggle that they are going through. Thank you for your hard work and dedication. And for having the courage to do something many would not do, groom an aggressive dog. Now i can try and groom my dog with more confidence.

12ADarkAngel Wow! I love this comment, especially how you ended it :-) You can, and you will groom your dog with confidence. As the wise Jedi Master, Yoda would say, "Do not try. Do, or do not. There is no try." LOL!! I'm pretty sure you're not a Star Wars fan - and if you are that's pretty awesome! - but you really do have everything inside of you that you need to pull it off. I really appreciate all the kind words of encouragement! My shop is located in Chamblee, GA; which is in the Metro-Atlanta area. If you're ever in town, I'd love to groom your dog for you! Thanks again!

I love the way you handled Sunshine, I have a Chihuahua, I rescued from a Walmart Parking lot.....looked for his owner for many months then he was mine we fell in love I tell you. He is my buddy and his nails grow like you would nto believe, well I bet you do seeing as who you are....right now he has one of them broken and painful. He is just vicious when I try to cut them. Two groomers will not work on him...you inspire me though...today he is getting his nails cut no matter how long it takes.... I will be patient and get it done....I always feel sorry for him and quit. Any advice how to treat the sore nail. Not sure actually if it is a break, could be a broken toe it is twisted...was just thinking of coming in quick for that one...so frustrated...not sure what to do.
@JunTheGroomer110 жыл бұрын
I'm so sorry for not responding sooner - I can't believe I missed this one! I love your attitude - I'm going to get it done no matter what! However, when we have circumstances like a twisted or possibly broken toe I would recommend going to see your vet as soon as you're able to. That sounds painful, and you don't want your friend to think that you don't respect how he's feeling about the painful toe. If what you do provides comfort, he'll understand. But I'd be a little worried that I may possibly make it worse, unintentionally of course, but the dog may lose trust in you. You are a saint - really. My heart is touched by your kindness and willingness to help an individual that is unable to help himself. When we lighten the burden of another, we are sharing the love that is in us - whether it is a human or an animal, kindness is still kindness. You inspire me. But with all that said, I would still see a vet about the toe - LOL! But it sounds to me like you already have everything it takes to accomplish anything you set your mind to. Keep being an inspiration to others like me, we appreciate it!

Thanks so much for your wonderful heartfelt response. I did get his nails taken care of. They were nothing like the ones in some of your vids but the nail had broken beyond the quick. I coaxed him with chunks of cheese and we got it done. But I so agree, if I cannot keep it up we go to a vet. He has been through so much in his little life.. when I found him he had a huge gash in his back then right after he lived with us only a few weeks he was attacked by a neighbors pit bull and had to undergo two surgeries....poor baby...so together we have bonded a lot and well Love him so much...thanks again...you are so inspirational, Just love you too.

Woah, relax there jules - LOL! It's ok that people get upset with these videos. They are concerned about the dogs and their well being - there's nothing wrong with that. Plus they don't know my intentions so they may just be looking at my actions without considering my intent. But I always say, Intent vs. Impact - even if I had good intentions if the impact is negative than I should reconsider what I'm doing. Thank you so much for understanding me!

I am also a groomer and somewhat agree with previous comments that this whole process may be far too stressful for a dog this age. I am also curious why you brushed it all out just to shave it off? If I'm shaving a dog, I don't spend any time brushing it. Kudos to you though - you are very kind and patient with him =]
@JunTheGroomer110 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the compliment, Serena Harris! I agree, this dog is too old and too scared to put him through another groom without sedation. It is always a good idea to brush out the dead hairs out of the skin before shaving because the millions of hairs that are still in the skin, waiting to be pushed out by new hairs replacing it, will be locked in the pores along with all the cellular debris and sebum that accumulate inside the pores. Shaving a dog prior to carding them out is ok if it is done due once or twice in the dog's lifetime, but repeated cellular damage to the skin will eventually result in bumps, lumps, tumors and all sorts of skin issues. Because it is all happening on a cellular level it takes several years for us to actually see the damaging results. The canine skin and coat works a lot like a horse's skin and coat - nothing like human skin and hair. As groomers we have a very big responsibility to know what we are doing to the dog's skin and coat - what the products to use for different situations. We have to educate the public on the importance of daily brushing and less washing. Just like a horse, washing a dog too frequently will dry out their skin. Brushing daily, and especially before we shave, is the best way to preserve the health of the skin. Only a healthy skin can produce a healthy coat. Thank you so much for watching, and I really appreciate the question!

I understand what you were doing because, I do alot if aggressive dogs I know some people would think sedation would be more appropriate, but sometimes can't because of age. Only thing im trying to understand is the brushing, was it necessary? Dogs that I do that are like this, I usually just shave it without brushing because one pull or tug they go crazy. But totally respect you doing the dog its not easy !!!!
@JunTheGroomer19 жыл бұрын
+80sfanjk Yeah, you're right :-) Looking back on it, I think the best thing would have been for me to just start shaving. It would have saved both of us a lot of time and effort. The coat wasn't going to be saved anyway so I should have just shaved instead of try to brush. But yeah, from one groomer to another, I feel you! Nothing but respect for you :-) Thank you so much for the support!

The tranquil music is good. As a gov't Auditor dogs would misbehave and when I played a tranquil outdoorsy cd music with streams, birds chirping and wolves howling, wolves/pups noises in play...the dog stopped instantly. Maybe you can try that.

@JunTheGroomer19 жыл бұрын
Troublebunnie Thank you for the compliment! However, when I think back on this I agree with you. I should've just shaved him down from the beginning and not wasted time trying to brush him. I think that only agitated him more when he was already freaking out. This was a great lesson for me, and I know now that it is better to shave and start over in these cases. Thank you so much for you nice comments! I'm sure you could've been more critical, but you chose to be kind and share what you would've done instead. I honor that kindness in you. Namaste: I honor the light in you that is also inside of me. :-)

Kudos to the groomer, it takes patience and time to do this although I'm not sure I'd let the dog bite me lol! my fingers and hands are my livelihood. I am fortunate enough to work at a vet and they will give a light sedative to calm him and would monitor him. He has obviously been handled roughly in the past and the owner didn't work with the dog to desensitize him to being handled. I really like the caring attitude of this man, he seems really genuine.

He's so scared of being hurt that he'll hurt himself to avoid it. I adopted one almost this bad. I did the grooming myself, and I'm not a pro in any way. I took lots of time, did everything very slowly, talked to him, hugged him, and gave him pieces of bologna or hot dogs to change his way of thinking. I also did things for only 5 minutes or so at a time. Put him down on the floor, give him bologna, let him take a break. It worked and he trusts me much more. The owner should do stuff with their own troubled dog at least once a week, very slowly, quietly, gently and with lots of love and praise and really good treats like bologna and lots of breaks! Don't force this on them for long periods of time! The dog can improve. You have to handle them with kid gloves.

Alice Connell I think they did their best. Some dogs, especially purebred dogs like Poodles are just born like that. It's like a birth defect from too much inbreeding or unethical breeding practices. I'm not saying that you're incorrect, just that there are other factors to consider as well. His mother said that nobody has ever hurt him as far as they know, and they think he was born like this. That's why finally at 4 he was turned over to the shelter, and the shelter deemed him too dangerous to adopt. He was on death-row, but the day he was scheduled to die the lady who owns him now saw him and just couldn't let him die. He actually attacked everyone but her, and he bonded with her immediately. I wouldn't feel too bad for this lucky guy. He actually has a great life at home - spoiled actually :-) LOL! I do understand your feelings too, and I'm so happy that someone with such a kind heart like you supports my channel. Thank you so much for watching!
