I know this is an old video but maybe you'll see the comment anyway. I just wanted to say that I am training to be a groomer (been a bather for about 9 months) and your grooming videos are my favorite to watch by far. You really make it about the happiness and healthiness of the dog and you really put into words so well the importance of this job. I'm proud to be part of a community that includes people like you!

Michelle Phillips Awesome! I'm so happy that my videos helped! You can totally do it - biologically speaking, you are just as capable as doing it as I am. You ever see Unlimited, where they take that super pill? Physically nothing changes but they're suddenly able to do incredible things because they changed the way they think. What if all you had to do was to believe that you can do it and just trust your body to do it? Pretty trippy stuff, I know, but it's worked for me and I'm sure it will for you too. Let me know how you do - I'm so eager to hear how it went!

thedoggroomer2012 It went a lot easier than I thought. Helps to have a calm dog! Have not been able to find that tool you use for the eyes and muzzle. Where did you get it? Could really use it.

Michelle Phillips They're called stripping knives, and I ordered them from Petedge.com. It's a technique that groomers call "hand stripping", but basically its just pulling out the dead undercoat. You can also chalk up your fingers or use rubber tips in order to grip the hair better and pull the hair with your fingers. But it is much easier and faster to use the stripping knives, in my opinion. :-) I'm so happy to hear that the groom went smoothly!

He's such a good dog who loves to be groomed. He's so sweet allowing you to work on his face with out nibbling or trying to bite like other dogs shown. Thanks for the wonderful info.....so true it's not about the look; it's about how the dog feels. It must start with proper training and handling in order to develop trust.....

Just watched this video for the first time and it is truly the best grooming video I have ever seen. Love all the attention to detail and the sincere caring shown toward the dog. This has given me the confidence to attempt grooming my two Havanese. I have been extremely unhappy with the results of having my dog groomed professionally and I am sure they didn't receive all the attention, affection and thoroughness you displayed in this video. Although I know I will make mistakes and be extremely slow for awhile, I feel I can do this and my dogs will be much happier in the long run. I learned so much from this video. Thank you so much for your time and expertise and; more importantly, my dogs thank you.

Barbara Guzman Wow, thank you so much! I'm sure your babies will love that you're their groomer now, and you can always take them to the grooming salon when you don't have time. In my book, the Art of Grooming, I actually talk about that in the last chapter. I believe that when you're grooming your dogs don't worry so much about making it look perfect. You'll make some mistakes even when you're experienced because sometimes they move at the right moment. If you get a chance, I would suggest listening to my audiobook series on my channel called the Art of Grooming. I think you'll really like it. :-) If you do get a chance to listen to it, I'd love to hear what you think!

You have the perfect attitude, and I believe you will become a better groomer than me someday! It's not flattery or blowing smoke - it's absolutely true. My body will only be able to do this for so long before I will have to retire, and you're just starting off so it is actually very true that you will be a better groomer than me someday. :-) LOL! But like Wayne Dyer says, "True nobility is not about being better than somebody else, it is about being better than you used to be." As long as you stay curious, fascinated, enthusiastic, and most of all passionate, you will never feel burned out or lose interest in grooming. It is not about the money, it is about the joy and happiness it brings to both the dogs and ourselves. The reward comes from the dogs, the payment comes from the owner ;-)

This is the best video I have seen so far on how to do the legs and feet. I've been getting better, but I don't get much practice as most of the dogs I do are "just shave em down". I like feet to look floofy and have some shape. And I'm going to get a small stripping tool. That works much better than shaving in the eye area, which makes me nervous and doesn't look good either! Thanks and keep up the good work!

Hi there. Wonderful video. Lovely to see your bond between your family and your precious little Shi Tzu. I am getting my first ever pet - a shi tzu I named Pandora (Panda) as she is black and white. I wonder what clippers you use and the little hair blade for the little hairs around the nose. I would like to try grooming her myself as I feel it would help us bond more and help her grow to trust me in her health care. I also know then that she will be well looked after during the process and no worry about errors irresponsible groomers can make :) thank you so much for your help :)

+Allyson Grant-Stuart, I usually use a 7" Curved Shear and a 46-tooth Thinning Shear around the eyes. I recently sat in on a demonstration by Jonathan David, he's a big name in the grooming world ;-) He pointed out that with thinning and blending shears, it's not the number of teeth but how they are designed that matters. Hi Jun, I have a Peke and he's brundled from head to tail on top down to just the bottom of the curve leading to his underside. White in all other areas. I'd ike to groom him in a nice summer cut, but I've never shaved the opt part, but have done the white part shorter. Can you do a divo on a Peke and tag me in it - would love to see how you do that.

Hey Jun! It was great watching this a second time. I watched it when I was barely grooming for a month and now that I've seen it again (8 months later), I picked up on so much more. I have been shaving the legs, so ya technically, they do look like chicken legs, lol! I wanted to let you know that I am trying to pursue my own grooming salon and would love your input. For starters, what brand of scissors do you love? I don't live anywhere that I can hold the scissors in my hand before I buy, so that's a tough one. I would like a long and short curved, short with rounded tips, and thinners. I tend to switch hands when working on the face and feet, so not sure if I need lefties for the switch or if there are scissors out there that accomodate a switch hitter. Are you a master groomer yet? It would be so awesome to come a see you for a week if I can arrange it for my business loan. Also, you directed me to this video when I asked you about shih tzu and lhasa face grooming.....so I guess I need to see a variety of styles. We typically get 4 requests from owners: a tight face, a teddy face, a squared beard and chops, and rounded beard and chops. I always have a hard time balancing the bottom beard and chops on their cheeks. Plus there seems to be a difference in techniques their visors too.

+Tanja Comeau You're so amazing, and very ambitious - which takes a lot of courage. :-) I'm so impressed with how quickly you're coming along! You really do have a natural talent for this, and I'm so excited that you're taking me along on your journey to becoming an amazing dog groomer! I personally use Aussie Dog shears because they're light and easy on my hands, and they seem to stay sharp and give me good performance day in and day out. They're not show quality finishing shears, but they're reliable and good for the daily grind of a professional groomer. I also want to try out Chona Shears because I met with the owners at their booth at SuperZoo this past July. They seem like amazing people and the shears cut amazing well! I tried them on some sample hair and I was truly impressed with the quality. I don't own a pair yet, but I will as soon as I'm able to. Here's the link to their website: www.chonashears.com. I also really appreciate the feedback about the different faces! This gave me an idea. I just trimmed We-Me like a Miniature Schnauzer again because he was getting pretty shaggy, and also my girls love it ;-) But when he grows out again and has a full shaggy head, I'll make another video trimming down his head in the different styles you mentioned. I'll start with the rounded Teddy Bear Head, then square his beard and chops, then I'll tighten everything up to make a tight face. That would be an awesome video that would be fun to do! I'll even do his ears long and straight at the bottom, then rounded ears, and then short and straight, then short and rounded, and then I can even edge the ears while still fluffy (which is super cute) and then clipped short and edged. Thank you so much for the great suggestion - this will be an amazing video for everyone asking about the head and ears! It would be so amazing if you could come out to Utah and work with me for a week - I'm sure we'd learn a lot from each other :-D I'm not a certified master groomer, but I'm a master groomer in the sense that I help create more masters - and you're a perfect example! My definition of a master is not one who has many students, but one who creates many masters. :-)

Antonio Alvarez In my opinion every groom should consist of 3 steps in this order: 1) Detoxification - Carding out the coat, and removing excessive buildup out of the pores. 2) Hydration - Cleaning and moisturizing the skin. Conditioning and strengthening the hair. 3) Hand Dry & Styling - Setting the coat and training hairs to lay properly, and scissor finish trimming. Therefore, the answer would be - in my opinion - the bath first and then the haircut. ;-) Thank you so much for watching - and I really appreciate the question! It was a great question, and it gave me a great opportunity to explain the proper steps. Thank you!

serama13 Thank you so much for the compliment, and for watching our video! Her name is spelled Christina Pawlosky, but many of the people in the industry call her Chris Pawlosky. This is a link to one of her videos that I really like: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZ-zonyepdZrqsU. She has such a pleasant demeanor and explains what she's doing in a way that's easy for anyone to understand. I'm a huge fan! :-)

Sherri B The secret is in the prep work. Combing out all the dead coat before clipping. But another trick is to card out the clipper lines & choppiness with a coat king (undercoat rake) after clipping. :-)

eliana wylie I used a #2 comb on the body, and an #0 comb on the head and the legs. They're the metal kind that are colored so that would be a Blue comb and a Yellow comb. :-) Thank you so much for watching!

HelenBlondelTV Oh yeah it happens, but fortunately it hasn't happened in a long time for me. Hopefully that is a testament to my skills getter better - LOL! I think experience has a lot to do with it, honestly, but also with experience comes confidence. Confidence helps to fight off fear and anxiety. When we worry about something, we are often inviting the very thing we're worrying about to actually happen just by worrying about it. Rather than think about the what if's, I now try to focus on what I am doing and stay totally engaged in the moment. But I know what you mean… I used to have nightmares after work! LOL!

Vivian Lindsay We actually were considering moving to CA last year, and earlier this year when our business was getting back on it's feet. However, it looks like Atlanta will be our home for a long time - we have such a strong, loyal following now that it would be very difficult for us to pack up and leave. It was like God grabbed us before we could leave and said, "Nope, you still have work to do here." :-) Thank you so much for watching!!

eliana wylie It's an Andis AG2. I'm not sure if this is the exact link I used to by mine, but it has pictures and details for you. Andis is the only brand I've ever used so I'm not sure if I'm a good groomer to get recommendations from. I'm thinking about trying out Wahl or Oster clippers just so I can compare and contrast. Hope this helps, and thank you so much for watching our videos! www.amazon.com/Andis-22360-2-Speed-Professional-Clipper/dp/B0018KVI5M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1415068154&sr=8-1&keywords=andis+agc+2+speed

I'm a little confused by the filmed on location and website.....searching for both lead to little. If I were a pet parent interested in having YOU groom my dog....I'd be left empty handed and due to my (assuming since I'm a self-proclaimed 'normal' person) busy schedule, I would just go elsewhere. Am I typing wrong or are you some super secret groomer that just has too many request dogs to accept new clients?? If the later is true...that's fine...just maybe don't give out location and website info It's either not an accurate way to find you or you are not interested in it atm. My questions are legitimate.....rereeading it it sounds rude and I apologize. Can't think of any other way to word it...haha

LOL! Thank you for the feedback!! I really appreciate it :-) We've moved around... a lot! LOL!! We first started out in Buckhead, Atlanta at a retail location, but that didn't work out the way we planned. Then we moved into a small commercial home in Chamblee, GA where we groomed and lived out of the same location. We moved to Arizona suddenly when we received word that my mother-in-law was in the hospital paralyzed due to a severe stroke. Then we moved up to Utah to pursue an opportunity that didn't work out the way we hoped, and had to move back down to Arizona. Once everything settled, we decided to move back to Atlanta where I now make private house calls to our clients. We actually are at a point where I cannot take anymore new clients for a while, but I still like sharing grooming tips and information that are helpful. :-) I don't save any of the original files once I upload them onto KZbin so I can't go back and edit the old videos. I don't want to delete them either because the information is still helpful. So that's the reason why our channel is so confusing, and it seems like I'm a traveling groomer that can't stay in one place. LOL!!
