I grew up with a Border Collie. She would actually 'herd' my brothers and myself to stay in our yard, away from dangers on the farm. When we grew older she understood so very much of what we said to her. She was just astounding. Her one drawback was fear of thunder. Poor girl had to be brought inside during storms. If we happened to be out and about on the farm when a storm rolled in we just had to hold her big old self in our laps until it was over. She was the perfect dog to grow up with.

They are such beautiful dogs with gorgeous natures. Soooooooo intelligent it is frightening. I used to take one of mine down to a play park where there were stacks of kiddies. Parents would all be standing around with themselves, so I'd pick my moment and tell Pfeiffer (the B.C) "Get em". and she would zoom off and just start rounding up about a dozen or more children. Fusck it was funny to watch. Eventually a parent would express concern come over and ask what was happening and you'd have to call her off in between giggles. She loved it for fun And yeah I've had four and they were all utterly terrified of thunder and fireworks. Turn into quivering, dribbling fools in your lap trying to get inside you via your lap to get away from the noise. In storm season it was a nightmare because you'd have to monitor the weather constantly and at the hint of a storm leave work and rush home. The boss thought it was ridiculous. But it was that or they escape the yard and disappear.

+Christusolus Thanks mate! I so miss having one. There is a absolute beachfront pub so every arvo I go down and hijack owners walking them. Without fail I get a B.C hit or four. They can be rude fuckers and completely ignore you no matter what you try for interrupting exercise or be all over you like a cheap suit. :-)

This surprises none of us that have worked in rescue for years. Glad that others are learning just what intelligent beings dogs are. We know why we spend all our spare time and money saving dogs....They feel pain, fear, and loneliness just like we do. They give so much in return and they need and deserve our protection.

wow. when they were back in the studio sitting on the chairs, with the dog chilling out on the floor in front... she says the name 'chaser'... the dog picks his head right up and starts listening to their conversation. chaser is clearly trying to discern if they are talking to him directly or not --and when the camera zooms in on chaser's face, you can watch his eyes and see how intently he is listening to their words. you can almost see his brain working--that he's truly a thinking creature.

Chaser's person and owner (Dr. John W. Pilley) died on Sunday, June 17, 2018. In April, he had been diagnosed with leukemia. Pilley would have turned ninety on July 1, 2018. Pilley's daughter said that shortly before her father died Chaser positioned herself facing his bed looking directly at him and barked loudly at him (she isn't a barker) and kept her eyes fixed on him until after Pilley died. At the memorial service on Friday, Sept. 28, 2018, I saw and spent time with Chaser. She is till very grief-stricken and misses her person greatly. Pilley was at work on a second book about Chaser and how to train your dog to be one. The family--especially Chaser--are adamant that the book will appear soon as a memorial to Dr. Pilley, Chaser, and their work together.

I have a Ca de Bou (Mallorcan bulldog) who knows a lot of words. If I for example say "Wikus (his name) - bring BALL. He'll go look for the ball, and if it's in another room, I'll say "no no, Wikus - BALL. In the COUCH." And so he goes in to the living room, finds the ball on the couch, and comes trotting back, looking very proud of himself. ^_^ He knows ball, rope, leash, sock, bento (a special treat toy), lila (means purple, for a purple toy), dalmatian (for a stuffed dalmatian he had), dinosaur (same there), stick, frisbee, chew bone, food, pizza, meat, treat, hungry (but I bet he thinks they all mean the same thing - I could make a test on that some day), friend, Alex (my fiancé), Frida (that's me), Mimas (mom's dog), Daphne (sister's dog), dog, baby dog (I say that instead of "puppy" to him), cat, go pee, go poop, visit friend, chair, bed, couch, and this is excluding all words that are commands. When I say something he doesn't yet know, he'll stare at me first and tilt his head around, then stare straight out into space, trying to process what I said. My mom's dog (Shetland sheepdog) knows the difference between go, go out (leave the room), and go to bed, which I think is pretty impressive. Border collies are super smart but all dogs are on a scale of intelligence, and molossers are pretty smart too. (Can't say that for the whippet I had though...)

What an amazing display of a dog's intellect, especially in finding the new, unknown toy by process of elimination. Sallie, the famous canine Civil War mascot of the 11th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, was said to be able to tell the difference between Confederates and Union soldiers. She also recognized the various drum rolls that gave the soldiers their commands. Smart dogs!

I had a Rottie a few years back who could pick out toys like that. Amongst her toys were 7 rubber spiky balls of different COLORS and I could ask her to bring me the YELLOW spiky ball or the PINK spiky ball and she would. I think a LOT of dogs are THAT clever but we are, as a species, too self centered to realize it so we treat them like "dumb" dogs and they simply live down to their expectations.
@PURPLE.REIGN.199910 жыл бұрын
I had a shepherd mix that could pick out toys too, like her hedgehog, ball, bone, etc and she also knew people's names and where they usually came into our house. George would come in the side door, gramma would come in the back door. So if you said Where's George? she would look for him at the side door, Where's gramma? she would go to the back window etc, Where's Elizabeth (my daughter), she would go upstairs to her bedroom. She died a few years ago - lived to be 14. Miss my old girl.

She also herded me to my meter to tell me my sugar was too high and to the kitchen if my sugar was too low. Before she died at 16, Tess taught her new BFF-my red/white BC-to take over my job. And she did after a doggy lecture when she was just a pup and helped me manage my Diabetes til she died at 14 last year.

Bonnie was my girl. I took her to obedience classes to give her something to do. She maintained eye contact with me nearly all the time. She picked up the idea on nearly every exercise quickly. In the end, Bonnie left us, we think, for a neighbor/farmer who had livestock, and real work. If you want a chill dog, do consider a Retriever. But if you have tons of love, patience, and work, a Border Collie might be a great choice. ❤🐶❤

My dog (Jack Russell Terrier) knows the name of (most) of her toys. She wouldn't be able to do deductive reasoning like Chaser tho, who is doggy Einstein. It is cool how my dog is able to distinguish a cartoon dog on the TV. Even if it's not making any sound and is the most far off from dog-looking, she can do human-esque translating and be able to identify the cartoon as a dog. Pretty cool. Other than that... she barks at lamps because she thinks they're strangers.
