'The Dogs of War' is a 1980 war film based upon the novel The Dogs of War by Frederick Forsyth, directed by John Irvin. It stars Christopher Walken and Tom Berenger as part of a small, international unit of mercenary soldiers privately hired to depose President Kimba of a fictional "Republic of Zangaro", in Africa, so that a British tycoon can gain mining access to a huge platinum deposit. This movie was filmed on location in Belize. The Dogs of War title is a phrase from William Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar (1599), which uses the line "Cry, 'Havoc!', and let slip the dogs of war" (line 270, scene 1, Act III).

One thing here - Walken's character *_TOLD_* them that if they were 15 minutes late - he was going to give the country to that guy. I just don't think it even occurred to the people hiring him - that he meant it. Seems he did. The other thing about this - is that Walken's character was dying of cancer. So - he pretty much didn't care about his future career as a mercenary. This is a very good book and goes into a great amount of detail as to the exact methods used to buy the weapons they had. It's very, very good. .

@@floridafansteve5364 The reality is all about planning and the firefights are a very small part of it. Fredrick Forsyth moved in the same circles as UK intelligence and military as a journalist. It was always rumoured he had more of a connection than he said he had. I doubt anyone will know until after he dies. However the operation, or rather ones very similar, happened in Africa every now and again. It could have been generic or one that was planned or even based on one that actually happened. Difficult to tell in less it turns up in his notes after he dies.

Breaking Point. A choir is singing it in French, or Latin? Anyway, I can't imagine the production team choosing a song about mercenaries for their project. So, is the Dogs of War version alternate lyrics, or is this more HollyWoke irony? If so, what are original lyrics? Would really appreciate any help from those who can.

Damn, thanks for that info! Interesting. I think the movie for 'Day of the Jackal' closely followed the book, but even there some sacrifices probably were made too. Maybe here in Dogs of War, the emphasis was on Walken's character being the supreme badass?

@@gmshadowtraders of course. Although the part about gunning down kimba was done by someone else. But the part were bobi is killed shannon kills him differently and then after he kills bobi he introduces endean to okoye and explains why he chose him instead of bobi and then there's an epilogue after the fight explained the aftermath of the assault and what they did to the ones that died in their group because there were 4 Mercs in Shannon's group he led and 2 died and then because of what shannon did he goes off the grid when he gives up the documents of their involvement to north's people which is why shannon doesn't go back to London because endean goes after him for it. And in the book they beginning isn't in central america it's in biafra and the leader of biafra does the favor to shannon to send some of his exiled remnant biafran troops to assist him to avoid having anyone in endean's pockets to try and kill shannon and okoye.

I forgot to mention this but in the book their names and professions are different but the characters are exactly the same as the movie so you can literally notice whose who. Like drew in the book he has a different name and he is the bazooka specialist but you know its him because like in the movie Tom Berenger's character is always by Shannon's side throughout the film same goes in the book. They added one more character in the book but I understood why they didn't use him in the past because he's a former hitler youth but you'll notice that he's similar to the four long story short they're the same characters as in the movie just different names and professions.

@@LandersWorkshop yes exactly. Now the movie still top notch to this day some can agree and some well you get the idea can you blame them? of course not. But part in the book was added to the movie can you imagine how badass that scene alone would have been? Yes the characters would meet their fates obviously but they would have gone down in a blaze of glory especially Tom Berenger's Character. That alone the intensity would have increased in the film.

Filmed in Belize City. The government of Belize was careful to not have any mention of Belize as the location in the credits. I assume because the movie did not show Belize in a good light.

After seeing Christopher Walken in this movie, I find him to be more than an equal adversary to Roger Moore in "A View to a Kill!" I find him to be more than a real and worthy adversary to James Bond!

@@romuloambay9624 You got me there. I agree, Roger Moore was not an authentic, tough and rugged James Bond by any means. Of course, Roger Moore just happened to be the James Bond who starred in the same Bond movie that Christopher Walken also starred in.

Epitaph on an Army of Mercenaries These, in the day when heaven was falling, The hour when earth's foundations fled, Followed their mercenary calling, And took their wages, and are dead. Their shoulders held the sky suspended; They stood, and earth's foundations stay; What God abandoned, these defended, And saved the sum of things for pay. A.E. Housman
