Actually in the rules it says if you hold it longer than an hour he wouldn't need to touch the doll anymore to see her. I think all this time he's been moving her around without realizing it and we're only seeing what he perceives. For example, how he pulled her out the door. At first, he only grabbed her wrist in the house but when he went outside he's holding her by the neck.
